ok, I'm calling it as I see it...
For years, the GOP has nurtured the verbage that
anti-american = blue state = liberal/democrat
Therefore,
pro-american = red state = conservative
this propaganda worked well following 9/11, but is now seen as hollow and a bit rude....
I've always been irritated that I'm deemed unpatriotic because I dislike some GOP policies.... and I'm a bit amused that people seem taken off-guard by her recent comments....
it's all old news said hundreds of times before

It doesnt mean people in big cities arent or can't be patriotic

It's just another example of one side getting their jabs in on the other side. Us vs. Them. However, I find it a little amusing that those who thought that ignorant, divisive "letter to the red states" was a laugh riot are now all  about the Palin statement.

Last I checked John Mellencamp was not running for VP of the United States.

I don't know about that 'letter' but I feel compelled to discern between some joke thing from actual administration/political party talking points.
totally different IMO. I look away when something rude is on the internet... I take the insults to heart when one of my gov't reps keeps saying it.

I would have found the 'letter to the read states' very differently if it was Biden reading it.

Just because it's meant as a "joke" doesn't mean it's not repugnant. I'm sure the guy in the t-shirt telling us it's a white house meant it as a joke. As a Democrat who was raised in a Midwest red state and living in the deep South, I've seen this kind of stuff start problems. It reallylays the groundwork for an Us vs. Them mind set. That's all I'm saying. If you aren't willing to say "Hey. that's a really (sexist, racist, elitist etc) joke, then how can you complain when it becomes the mainstream mindset?

not what i meant - just giving an example of "middle america" and the bible belt
this is the type of speeches that ALL politicians give depending on where they are campaigning

You know, I actually like an drespect SP--a great deal, and I have tried to stay out of political debates and won't state who I am voting for...BUT...
this was a comment that really upset me. Looking at these and some other comments made by politicians in BOTH parties to pander to certain parts of the country, IMO, there is an undeniable bias being shown toward an "America" that is more homogenous, more religious, less educated, etc. than big city "America". I cringe at the word "elitist," that's being thrown around by BOTH parties--like there's something wrong with actually being informed and thoughtful. I hate insinuations that city dwellers, with their diversity of appearances, beliefs, and approaches are less American and more sinister than their small town counterparts, who may all worship at the same place, earn more unifrom salaries, etc. That's all. Carry on.
ITA- There was a wonderful article in Newsweek a few weeks ago about how the word Elitist had become a bad word. In it the writer pointed out that in fact he would LIKE his leader to be thoughtful, intelligent, wordly and a bit above him for to him that was in fact a leader. This whole Joe Ordinary movement that seems to be running underneath both campaigns is a bit frightening to me actually. I don't want my country run or have decisions made by so-called "more American" yet less savvy or educated people. Sorry, I would want someone who is actually a little more educate dicating what occurs. Sadly, I don't think this happens.

This entire campaign has been divisive - on both sides. I can honestly, as an avid political "junkie" say I am absolutely disgusted by these elections.
I believe both parties have tried to pin us against one another for their political gain. Whether it is in respect to patriotism or wealth, I feel like we are being played. This is just one example. Another could be what many commentators have dubbed capitalizing on the "politics of envy" (with respect to the 250K tax plan). I do believe that both candidates care about our country but I think their own egos/aspirations have blinded them.
I know I am going on a tangent here, but I feel so dissapointed and disillusioned with both candidates. Perhaps, it a a function of the more you know...I am not sure. At the onset of the primaries I was so hopeful for some really great candidates...but alas

I don't find her comment highly offensive because I don't care what she thinks. She is one of the last women on earth I would choose to emulate as a powerful career woman. I also think we should stop letting these politicians off the hook by saying, Thats just politics, Everyone does it. We should expect more than for our elected officials to pander to whomever they are in front of.
