Palin's "real" America
Do you feel like you fit into Palin's definition a "real American"?
I have to say I'm feeling a bit alienated by the relentless defining of just what makes one or where they live and what they do. By her definition, I'm not a real American! 
Maybe I'm being brainwashed by Jon Stewart

I identify with her description, but I don't agree with all of her points of view.
I live on LI but in the more rural, simple area. People in my town are blue collar, hardworking, firearm owners that hunt & grow food, many are veterans or active military people, being patriotic comes naturally to my neighbors-we even recite the pledge of allegiance at the start of every community event.
I'll be damned if I let Jon Stewart, Bill O'reilly or any other 'entertainer' skew my point of view AT ALL. Their lives are NOTHING like mine & their opinion is worthless to me.

it's so bizzare b/c I live in the biggest most populated city in America, yet my entire family serves the govt and has served our country in one form or another.
giving blood, giving life...whatever it took.
I didn't grow up on a farm...but I grew my own tomatoes in my back yard.
I think defining "real" america is such a huge disserve, and is actually a touch disrespectful to the millions of people that live in Big City america.

I agree. I think she was just referring to what has also been referred to as the "backbone of America."

How is she discounting any families that have served or have family serving or served in uniform? They are mutual exclusive sentences and one isn't dependent on the other.
She doesn't say that the only ones in uniform that count are the ones coming from small town USA.

Thanks Tuttsy for the quote - that was exactly what I was talking about.
I hope the item about the "entertainers" is not directed at me. I was joking when I said Jon Stewart's brainwashed me. I was bothered by her statements before he mentioned it on his show.
The thing is I don't see how whether one is blue collar or not has anything to do with one's sense of patriotism. If I have a desk job in New York City how does that make me any less "American" - in fact, I live in a whole other country at the moment, does that mean I don't contribute to what makes America the great place that SP says it is? I understand her speeches are tactical, but the spirit of what she says does nothing to unite this country, IMO.

She has never said that people in big cities or soldiers from big cities are bad people. Politicians from ALL sides have said things to appeal to a certain demographic while in that particular area, then said something contrary while in another area.
That's politics

like I said in my above post, I come from a strong military family...from NYC. I really don't like the divide she is creating with her ideas of "real" America.

its not 'directed' at you, but its my opinion in reponse to your comment. I'm not implying in anyway that I took your comment 100% seriously, I knew there was some sarcasim there. I do think however that a signifigant part of our population IS affected by opinions of 'enertainers' on both sides & that frightens me.

I think she was naming groups typically found in small towns. She was speaking in a small town and talking to the things and ideas they know. A factory worker from the rural farming areas of PA couldn't possibly relate to the life of a CEO of a mega cap. She was speaking of things that appeal to the group she was talking to.
Again, it's so far from a real issue that I don't see why it's news worthy or needs to be dissected.

I don't think the OP posted it as an "issue" in the election per se, but more of a reflection of how SP's statements made her feel.
this whole pitting of "main street" vs. "wall street" and Washington is divisive and completely unhelpful. we should be trying to figure each other out and finding ways to work together instead of finding scapegoats and trite political dings.
I am honestly tired of the "two Americas" we have...it feels like North and South.

Nah, what I meant with Biden was that (sorry for off topic) he thought we were going to experience some horrific attack BECAUSE of an outside force ( nation, terrorist group) feeling the need to test Obama and I thought that was a very frightening thought and something that should not have been said to the public. I did not see it as "all presidents are tested as they come into office" until I read some of the other opinions.
But honestly, reading Palin's remarks alone - I did not see anything offensive in them.

Exactly. I understand it's tactical - she's trying to garner support from the conservative population - but in the meantime, she's driving a wedge further between the 'two Americas'
Also, large cities typically vote more liberally, so coupled with the fact that she's already questioned Obama's patriotism, she seems to be saying Democrats are anti-America. Which is just ridiculous. What is anti-American anyway? Someone who lives here but doesn't want to see the country prosper? I think she'd be really hard pressed to find someone who would say they were anti-American!

Its common knowledge that our enemies test every new administration. They want to see what their made of, sort of speak.
