You know, I actually like an drespect SP--a great deal, and I have tried to stay out of political debates and won't state who I am voting for...BUT...
this was a comment that really upset me. Looking at these and some other comments made by politicians in BOTH parties to pander to certain parts of the country, IMO, there is an undeniable bias being shown toward an "America" that is more homogenous, more religious, less educated, etc. than big city "America". I cringe at the word "elitist," that's being thrown around by BOTH parties--like there's something wrong with actually being informed and thoughtful. I hate insinuations that city dwellers, with their diversity of appearances, beliefs, and approaches are less American and more sinister than their small town counterparts, who may all worship at the same place, earn more unifrom salaries, etc. That's all. Carry on.

Its common knowledge that our enemies test every new administration. They want to see what their made of, sort of speak.
exactly. everyone things McCain is Mr. Big and Bad b/c he talks the talk and WILL go in guns blazing.
but Iraq is leaving us so vulnerable anyway b/c of sheer numbers...that even if McCain wanted to retaliate quickly, he'd have a hard time getting boots to the ground.
I think that we are open to be "tested" no matter what.
hell, al queda ALREADY tested us, and we still invaded the WRONG country. I'd say we got a D+ there at best.
If people want to think al queda will only hit us up in an Obama presidency...more power to them.
I don't think that is the case. ESPECIALLY since he's already said he'll light up Pakistan SIN PERMISSO if he knows al queda is there.
he may walk softly, but I am sure he carries a big stick (and no, that wasn't a reference to his blackness    )

This statement, as with any statement made on the campaign trail, is going to be injected with one's own personal bias for or against the particular candidate.
I, myself, am not a fan of Palin but I found her statement to be fairly innocuous. I think she was making a contrast with DC politics.
No matter how much any of us would like to think we are objective - the fact is we are not and your opinion of whether any given statement from either is side is inflammatory or controversial will depend on what side you are on.

We all think we are but that is why it is a bias. Because it is deeply ingrained and it colors our perception. I see it day in and day out on these boards, from both sides. I am certain I am guilty of it as well.

You know it. Not to mention, we're on the front lines of the war on terror, and we've got the death toll to prove it. NY is where the rich and the poor live side by side, and where the educated work to serve the uneducated and help t heir children to become educated. I am so sick of both parties pandering to people who have no tolerance for anything or anyone who's not like them.

We all think we are but that is why it is a bias. Because it is deeply ingrained and it colors our perception. I see it day in and day out on these boards, from both sides. I am certain I am guilty of it as well.
I actually copped to it already on the first page of this thread
but...I think my bias is just more that of SP and who I *think* she is, more than a political thing.
I feel she has real disdain for "city" folk.

DC was not one of the first 13 colonies. It wasn't even designed until 1791.
The colonies of the 1600's can't be compared to our large cities of today. New England Colonies were largely farming and fishing communities. Boston of today is hardly what it was when it was a colony.
I really don't see where what she is quoted as saying means that big US cities are un-American. Maybe I'm just too thickheaded to see that calling small town America - Real America means that NYC is any less American.

Politicians will say whatever they have to say to get their votes.
She is one of the most divisive politicians I have ever heard. Her speeches are filled with hate. She does not unite us at all. I think that's very un-American and un-patriotic. It does absolutely no good. She doesn't say anything in her speeches..there is no substance.
Let her rip..I can take it.

I don't think you'll ever find that, but I think before Palin, McCain was doing a good job of uniting people and crossing party as well as populist lines.
I think what I find most frightening is that Palin divides the country on things that she doesn't need to. People disagree on issues - that's politics, we all get it. But to pit certain parts of the population against one another is really really harmful to us all as a nation. Perhaps that wasn't her intention, but she should know by now that she's dealing with a very diverse country and that pandering so blantantly and relentlessly to one faction is going to alienate others. As a woman with five children she should know that!

Hillary Clinton did the same thing when campaigning in NYS for Senate. She campaigned and spoke to the issues that affected most of upstate NY. She did very little campaigning in downstate NY and addressed few of the issues that concerned downstate, IMO.

good for you, as I explained earlier I live in the kind of place she is talking it about. It does resonate with me, I truly believe her comment should be held in the same light as all of the
" we want to protect Main Street Not Wall Street" comments from both sides.
Should we assume that Senators Biden, Obama & McCain mean they don't give a $hit about all of the NYers losing jobs on Wall Street and that they only care about people employed on main street?
I don't think so. You & I don't agree on anything ever, so once again with all due respect...let's leave it at that.

Exactly, none of us really know what she means so any of our interpretations are just that.
I don't see any malice in it; you do. Two different interpretations which neither is probably 100% correct.
