Campaigning is basically a contest and they are all playing to win in whatever way they can. It's the original reality TV.

I'm not running for Vice President of the country -  And I never said her comment offended me -
And I was making a point. - She's not going to go to NYC or LA and say 'here is the 'real' American' - She's never going to win THAT vote, so why waste her time playing to that audience?

I thought her comment was at best, in very poor taste, at worst, divisive--creating an us vs. them atmosphere which we do not need in this country. Whether you live in a big city or a small town, we are all Americans and share many of the same concerns.
I'm afraid I am not part of Palin's "real" America at all. I have spent my entire life in the NY metro area, tend to vote Democrat, and I am for that socialist this year. One of my best friend's dated a professor from Iran who went to school with Ahmadinejad (they didn't pal around, just knew one another). I don't own a gun, never have. I am pro choice and for gay marriage. The town I grew up in was very small, and had a Main Street, but it was in NJ, so it doesn't count. If Palin had her way, I would probably be deported.

And we do agree with why she chooses her audience, I ,however also understand why she said what she said to them and I am not at all 'offended' by her statement -
I don't agree with her, but I'm not offended - It's American, she has the right to say whatever she wants. - I just think as a VP candidate, you'd try a little harder not to alienate people -

Depends on the day whether I think that NYC is "real" America - I guess today when I was on the subway and two women got into a physical fight b/c someone didn't say excuse me, I was hoping this wasn't "real" america and trying to tell the tourists looking shell shocked that this doesn't happen often.

I want to preface this by saying I respect your point of view. Contrary to the way you feel, I believe I'm not part of Sen. Obama & Sen Biden's vision for America.
I feel they will force more government control into my life and I fear for my freedom, I'm deeply concerned about ALL of my immediate relatives that are small business owners, I'm afraid I may loose my right to bear firearms, I worry that our country will be more of a target for terror than ever before and I worry about what will happen to Isreal.
FTR my last trip to Europe included Paris as well.
My feelings are real as are yours.

No - i think it is just a comment that has more to do with my horrible commute today than anything - I needed to vent b/c it was the 4th time this week I have dealt with yelling/fighting people during my long commute and it is annoying the lack of respect people have for each other - couldn't tell you what they do in Iowa - just a comment on what I am seeing here

LOL - actually, yesterday i was a little disturbed b/c while waiting on line for a metro card these two women cut in front of the line and the woman in front said something, of course words were exchanged and one of the 2 women said " you should just shut up - that's how people get shot" - this was all at 8:30 a.m. - how do people have this much energy in the morning to be this angry!

This entire campaign has been divisive - on both sides. I can honestly, as an avid political "junkie" say I am absolutely disgusted by these elections.
I believe both parties have tried to pin us against one another for their political gain. Whether it is in respect to patriotism or wealth, I feel like we are being played. This is just one example. Another could be what many commentators have dubbed capitalizing on the "politics of envy" (with respect to the 250K tax plan). I do believe that both candidates care about our country but I think their own egos/aspirations have blinded them.
I know I am going on a tangent here, but I feel so dissapointed and disillusioned with both candidates. Perhaps, it a a function of the more you know...I am not sure. At the onset of the primaries I was so hopeful for some really great candidates...but alas

I partly agree with you, I too was very hopeful during the primaries, because I thought for the first time we would have 2 good candidates. I like McCain and Obama, and I thought it would be very hard for me come election day to make a choice. But as time passed the choice became so easy.
As for the pinning us against each other, I think that at the beginning they both did some "healthy" back & forth, but when Palin joined the ticket , it took such a turn for the worst, she brought a race bating, hate filled, divisive message.
I feel bad for McCain because I feel that the stand up guy, American hero that he is,
is somehow getting lost, in the shadows of Palin’s hateful rhetoric.

Besides the fact that she's obviously pandering to small town America, I can *kind of* see what she was trying to say, but she really seems to have screwed up the delivery.
I grew up on military bases all around the US and one in England. They tend to be in small towns that rely on the base to survive. My memories (and they could be messed up, I've lived on LI almost 20 years now) are that the places where I grew up were very outwardly patriotic. I remember seeing flags all over the place year round. But that could be because over 90% of the people living there were in the military or relied on the servicemen & women stationed there for their job.
From what I've seen, residents of big cities like NYC, Boston, Chicago and their suburbs don't show their patriotism like that. In my neighborhood American flags are flown mainly on Flag Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day & 9/11. I don't think that makes these areas less patriotic, I remember clearly how proud New Yorkers were to say they were Americans after 9/11. I think people who are only visiting places like where we live don't understand that we can be very proud Americans even if we don't dress up in a flag shirt.
I hope that makes sense. It does in my little pea brain.

it makes sense to me, that is how I hear what she's trying to say although I don't agree with all of her points of view.
