I think people kind of see it as an attack on a LIF vendor and to many...a friend...I think hence the comments on the thread. I mean infant photograpy is a luxury item and often expensive...often time luxury items are unaffordable to most. Not sure how much it was necessary to start a thread on how expensive a luxury item is. I mean we all know that a Mercedes SLK is expensive...

Anyway, the OP wouldn't have been able to use her for her DD's holdiay pics because she is booked for pretty much a year in advance.

The reason CD's cost so much is because she is giving YOU the right to take HER pictures (and yes they are legally hers even if YOUR child is in them) and allowing you to print them anywhere you chose. She will no longer make a dime off of all that work she did. So if she sold the CD for $100 thats all most people would buy and then she would be out of ALL that money for ALLL those pictures she put her hard work into. The point of charging that much for a CD is so you chose to buy prints directly from the photographer instead, and if you chose to spend the money on the CD then at least she gets paid for it. You can still print those pictures 10 years from now. SO over a lifetime of the CD you will never go back to her to buy from her, so she is charging for you to have printing rights for the rest of the CD's life.You(and your family) could print well over $800 worth of pictures off that CD, I don't understand how everyone thinks its fair for her to give printing rights and only expect her to charge like $100 off of it, she wouldn't be able to make this a career worth while because she wouldn't be making money off this.
I personally don't know Summer, but I know plenty of photographers. They have yearly costs that don't even just included regular business costs. We spend lots of money on props(I see summer has MANY different props so I assume she spends a good chunk of money on that), camera maintenance, new backdrops, and lighting. These things need to be replaced every so often so part of fees has to go towards all that or photographers would be out of money and their business simply wouldn't survive...

i dont think the sitting fee is that bad..$300 it seems with a $100 credit. however, the fee for the photo disk and rights seems high. But i can only imagine the time and effort that goes into processing each session, so it all relative i guess.
remember too that this is her full time gig now so if prices went up that means she probably had to hire help and lots of other overhead.
her work is fab though. part of me wishes i still lived in brooklyn just for this..LOL

I don't see anywhere on this thread that people think the OP had ill intent. She was saying she can't afford it. Clearly other people can.
I just want to clarify that people are getting the correct amounts off of her site. She's one of the few vendors that puts her prices out there, which I think is a good thing so people should be accurate when they are quoting her prices.
As I said before to the OP, talk to someone who is portfolio building. Back in March, Summer was pretty much still doing that, hence the good deal.

I mentioned it because I hadn't looked into Summer since I used in her March and I had originally planned on using her for my DD's 1st bday. In March, I wouldn't have considered pictures a luxury item because they were so affordable. However, when I went back to her website yesterday I had NO idea her costs went up. I was assuming she was still the $175 that I paid back in March. I posted more as a  because I didn't expect to see her prices to be what they were as I based my expectations on what I paid last March.
There is no ill will or attack behind my post. Just a general because I was surprised. If anything comes of this thread it's because everyone else is assuming I'm attacking Summer which I'm not. I know she has friends on LIF, as we all do, and this is NOT a character attack in any way. She took BEAUTIFUL pics of my DD and she's great at what she does I just wasn't expecting to see those prices and unfortunately for me I can't afford her right now.

Actually her holiday sessions were mini-sessions & were much cheaper because you get less photos.

My budget also only allows for up and comers, its hard because you LOVE the photgraphers work, and then it becomes out of reach, but at the same time they are growing and investing in their business and have to request more. My SIL has a base of $450, and that includes NOTHING...but its her livelihood. Def. look for someone building their portfolio, there are so many amazing photogs on here.
I actually did this by finding a photographer on Craigslist who was training someone else. The trainee actually got a beautiful shot of my son. I got some good ones some not so good ones but overall I was happy

please do not take offense...you never had ill intent...i was just explaining why people felt the need to defend summer.
And I also recommend Foreverfireflies...her prices are very good and her skills are wonderful!!!!! Book her before her prices go up as well due to the demand!!!

Sorry, I disagree. There was just a thread about Summer a few weeks ago that caused much drama. If OP didn't know about it, my apologies to her, but just by starting this thread, drama would most definitely ensue--everybody knows that.
Why does a poster have to publicly announce that a popular LIF vendor who was just bashed a couple of weeks ago has suddenly raised her prices so high that neither she nor many of her former customers can afford her now?

I recently spoke to Summer and I thought her prices were pretty reasonable compared to Blue Daisy Kids and some of the other photographers in my neighborhood. I kind of chuckled when I heard the CD is usually 800 bucks, but she can charge whatever she wants and if you don't like it, you don't have to use it.
Also, back in March she was working as a PO to supplement her income.
And don't forget who blew her up to these huge levels of popularity where she can charge big $$. All of the LIF Moms. Please don't flame, but if one Mom gets Summerlyn pics, 100 others HAVE to have them. It's just like LIW. How do you think Angelica Glass got so big? She even gives a shout out to LIW on her old website/blog. Same with certain hair/makeup/wedding photographers etc.
I have to agree. However, in this case, the OP was simply saying SHE can't afford Summer or anyone else who charges that price.
And maybe this post will give Heather (forever fireflies) business b/c she has cheaper rates, which works better for those on tighter budgets.
There is no doubt they all rock- Lorimarie, Summer and Heather!

First, I actually wasn't around for that thread so I don't even know what came of it or what was said. Second, as a paying customer of Summer or any vendor on LIF I do think that we have a right to post things about them. People post raves and recommendations all the time so it's only fair that someone could post other things as well.
Anyway, my OP was simply an observation as I had not visited her site in a while so I was surprised to see the price change as I've said numerous times. I am guessing that like me many LIF girls who used her early on wouldn't be so quick to rebook with her NOT because she doesn't do amazing work but because of the cost.
That's all. No need to look anymore into than that. I understand Summer has friends on here that will defend her however, I don't feel it's necessary as I'm not in any way saying anything bad about her. Just making the point that her prices went up. You can't really argue that point as they did. I was surprised and posted to see if I was the only clueless one.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say what I think even though I may get flamed for it. Lets face it, Summer does BEAUTIFUL work. However-I am sure her business would not have taken off so quickly were it not for the "word of mouth" situation on here. People post her pics, talk about how excited they are about sneak peeks etc.
Now some of that is facilitated by the website allowing this type of forum to take place but in reality it is all the posters who make it work. A true symbiotic relationship. With that said-maybe Summer could offer a special LIF discount or a short session for those who were previous customers and have been "priced out." Of course it is her decision to do what she chooses with her business but just some random thoughts I had.

Summer is worth every penny - and that's coming from someone that can't afford it either. I wish I could!
And I respect that she puts her pricing out there. If people know the pricing up front, they're less likely to waste time calling/emailing several times for info.
I also think the pricing is reasonable and competitive for what it is. Sessions can last hours, the can take a lot out of her (I don't know how her back is not killing her after a NB shoot!) and you do get $100 in prints.
It's not for everyone - like i said, I can't afford it either. But to those that can, go for it, she's worth it.

After reading this very long thread...I've come to the conclusion that it must have been really slow in the parenting board..because I read the first post...and read it again...and it still says the same thing...that she loves summer's photography..but she has become expensive..thats it...this is the reason sometimes I don't like to post...

I don't know Summer. I know she is booked for a very long time. She has built a successful business. If I were her, I would probably raise my prices too.
I am in sales, and as a sales person I NEVER talk price, especially for a high end item. It is something that comes up after the value of the service has been discussed. Summer and all of these photographers are high end. They do fantastic work. They are not Sears or JcPenny.
It's like a punch in the gut when someone draws attention to pricing like that. The clients of these photographers are going to them for their quality. Not because of price. To draw attention to it, especially if you were happy with what she did for you, is a slap in the face IMO. As a happy customer, maybe you should have spoken with her about it directly instead of drawing attention to it.

Kristen - take my advice and go with Forever Fireflies (Heather). We did a shoot with her last week, and it came out FANTASTIC!! Her work is amazing, she is easy to work with and her prices are VERY AFFORDABLE!
