I recently spoke to Summer and I thought her prices were pretty reasonable compared to Blue Daisy Kids and some of the other photographers in my neighborhood. I kind of chuckled when I heard the CD is usually 800 bucks, but she can charge whatever she wants and if you don't like it, you don't have to use it.
Also, back in March she was working as a PO to supplement her income.
And don't forget who blew her up to these huge levels of popularity where she can charge big $$. All of the LIF Moms. Please don't flame, but if one Mom gets Summerlyn pics, 100 others HAVE to have them. It's just like LIW. How do you think Angelica Glass got so big? She even gives a shout out to LIW on her old website/blog. Same with certain hair/makeup/wedding photographers etc.
Anyway, Summer and I are having trouble trying to find a date that works for my Christmas baby to get my Christmas/1st b-day pics on time so I might just go to my old wedding photographer. (Unless we can find something that works, Summer ;) )
Don't begrudge Summer for becoming a success and living her dream. Sometimes, we are lucky enough to meet vendors in their early days and experience their talent and then...poof...totally unaffordable. It happens with clothing designers too.
I agree with the other posters who say that if you can't afford Summer, look around for someone who is just starting out. Or someone less expensive, though it will probably be hard to find.
I don't begrudge her for becoming a success at all. I understand why she would charge more now I just think the unfortunate part is that she has made it such that many original customers can't afford her now. But that's how it goes. I wish her much success of course but for right now, she's waaaaaaaaay too costly for me.

Kristen - take my advice and go with Forever Fireflies (Heather). We did a shoot with her last week, and it came out FANTASTIC!! Her work is amazing, she is easy to work with and her prices are VERY AFFORDABLE!

I def DO NOT think the OP in any way was "begruding" Summer. Nobody is complaining that she became such a success. It just stinks when prices increase quite a lot over a relatively short period of time. That's all.

I agree..there are many talented photographers out there and some that will meet your budget

I don't feel that anyone is "begrudging" Summer. Yes, I do agree that she does a beautiful job and is very talented.
PP's just stated that it's not in their budget.
Times are tough right now, and more so for some people than others. While $800 may be the going rate, it just might not be in the budget for some people. That's all. No one is saying that Summer's work isn't worth it. I will forever treasure the pictures that she took of my kids... and I didn't use her services because all of the other Mother's did on this site. I used her because I saw sooo many examples of her work, and was and still am very impressed.

I actually think that this price makes more sense. Her old price was an amazing deal, but I felt like I was cheating her with how inexpensive it was. She works very hard!

For me the sitting fee is not THAT bad, I can save up for that, but the $800 for the CD is what I can not afford and that is what I would want in the end along with my beautiful pictures.
I am happy for her thought, that she is making her dream come true !

I don't know, it seems like some posters are resentful/hurt/displeased with the fact that Summer charges the prices of a professional photographer now that she is a professional photographer. That is "begrudging" her for becoming a success and charging reasonable prices...but I don't want to get into this...Summer is a really great woman and she doesn't deserve another thread devoted to how much she has changed... to all!

It's what happens when someone not only does amazing work, but becomes in demand becuase of it. I remember when I was planning my wedding, we went with Timeless Treasures when he was first starting out. He charged us $1200 and the video was unbelievably good. A year later, he was charging almost double.
I found a photographer down here in NC and had a great shoot.....but it's not like I can use her all the time, that's for sure. Just not in the budget....

I'm not begrudging her at all....I'm very happy she has become soooo successful and is able to do what she really loves. I just know for my family we cannot spend that kind of money.

Same here, I am very happy for her & I would even save up the $300 fee because I love her work SO MUCH, but its the CD price that is too much for me. No way I can afford $1000 ($300 sitting fee plus using $100 credit towards the $800 CD)

Just to be clear...........I am NOT in any way resentful or hurt or displeased. I am just SURPRISED with the difference in cost from March until now for the same services. That's all. Look, I know......it's all par for the course. The more in demand someone becomes the more they can charge. I get that. It just stinks that because of the increase I can no longer use her. That's all.
This is NOT an attack on her character, this is not about her not being a great woman. I am not speaking of her as a person or attesting to her character.....I simply was pointing out that she has become costly. Does she have a right to charge more?......of course BUT that just makes it such that I can no longer use her. That's all. It's not a bash Summer thread........I was pointing out what is obvious on her website. Her prices have gone up.

Same here. I was planning to save up for our newborn photo shoot with her, but sadly, she's all booked! 
I think $300 is fair for the quality you get. One of my close friends became a professional photographer and wanted to charge me $800 just for the sitting fee! Now that's crazy (mostly b/c she's a friend)!

I hadn't checked the prices lately and I think that the $300 sitting fee with a $100 print credit is not too bad, but the $800 charge for the CD is where is gets tough since I would absolutely need the CD (I have family all over the US and latin america and need to have the freedom to print as many pics as I need to- not all high quality obviously).
So in the old scheme of things I would pay $175 for the sitting and the CD, in today's scenario I would be paying $1100 for the same thing ($300+$800).
At the same time, however Summer is freakin' amazing and took the best pictures I have of my DD. Its just the way things work, once someone's business takes off the pricing is at their discretion and can also be used to curtail a million people knocking on your door wanting pictures and needing to turn down half of them because there aren't enough hours in the day.
Edited to add: Just read Summer's response and think its great to list out how time intensive this line of work can be- it really adds perspective!

Her fee is $300 ($200 for session; $100 towards your prints).
Her prices are currently 50% off the list price through December 2010???
Which means the CD is $400 of which you have a $100 credit towards...
and if you don't want the cd, then get the prints, no??

Ok...I myself was  when I saw the price for the package. However, you have to read further into it...thats just for the CD. With the $300...there is $100 credit toward prints. Her print packages are VERY reasonable. And you get a CD with pics you can send on the internet with the sitting fee. All of this is actually a very fair reasonable price for what you get. Im psyched for my next 1 yr shoot!!
