If there were not so many stressed out soccer moms speeding in huge SUVs with the TVs playing while they are talking on their cell phone & drinking a Chai on our roads we would all feel alot safer in more practial vehicles.

Bad drivers are bad drivers. To me what they drive is irrelevant. I've seen people driving crappy little cars WEAVING in and out of traffic, cutting people off.

They're as big a hazard as the bad driver driving an SUV.

I think the idea here is impact.

I know if God forbid I collide with another car, I'd rather it be a Toyota Corrolla than a Chevy Tahoe...especially in my little car Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i wrote something similiar in my post on the 1st page, but IMO, the bigger the car/suv/ the bigger the damage to its victim. ITA that drivers in any car can $uck, but after seeing a 17 yr old pedestrian that battled an Escalade and clearly lost, i worry more about the ones with the bigger weapons.

I agree to an extent, but in talking to people that I know that drive SUVs even though they complain about gas prices, the war, & whatever else. I often hear them say "i feel safer, there are too many other SUVs on the road, I don't want to be in a little car"
Jackazzes on the road come in all sizes, but full sized SUVs cause incrediable damage to other vehicles in moderate speed to high speed crashes.
We are all paying for the price of that in our insurance premiums

No. You don't. Our parents bussed us around just fine in a beat up sedan. You WANT an SUV, and that's fine, but I can't take the NEED part.

I am one of 4 children. My mom drove cars like Chevy Chevettes, Pintos, Gremlins and other assorted 4 passenger vehicles. We somehow managed to get around just fine. Chat Icon

1974 Ford Pinto got about 17mpg..... worse than most SUVs today.

come on, man. this is a misrepresentation of her point and the post.

obviously, she was referring to SIZE of the car, and that they managed to squeeze in.

fact is, if our parents knew then what we knew now, they'd be fighting this battles too...just perhaps a little bit more easily b/c we weren't as hooked on convenience as we are now.

And I have to agree with Diane- I would not put my kids in a Prius.

why not?

Same reason I will not put my children in my Mini Cooper.
Unfortunately, yes- it is because of all the other terrible drivers and their Suburbans and Hummers.
I will, however, find the most fuel efficient vehicle I can afford. Be it SUV or larger sized sedan. And I will drive it responsibly. Consolidating errands, car pooling, etc.
That is what I can offer. To make the best decision for my situation and priorities.
I am terrified of the road. I HATE driving. And I feel safer in an SUV, so I will prefer my kids in an SUV.
I drive a Suzuki Grand Vitara- it's A 4 CYL. It gets better gas mileage than my sister's Nissan Altima.
I like you fast, cheap, and easy.

I have two children & I have driven a small economy car for over 10 years. If there were not so many stressed out soccer moms speeding in huge SUVs with the TVs playing while they are talking on their cell phone & drinking a Chai on our roads we would all feel alot safer in more practial vehicles. Long island weather hardly warrants 4 wheel drive.
I just bought a toyota prius that has everything from smart key to a backup camera for $25,000, hardly alot to spend on a vehicle by todays standards.

I do agree- definitely. And I do think distracted drivers are dangerous no matter what they are driving- but I don't like the idea of driving a compact car with my children. Please don't forget- my husband and I have a Mini Cooper- I htink one of the smalles cars out there. Driving next to a Hummer is unbelievably frightening.

$25K is about $10K above my budget though.

Exactly- I agree that the point isn't for or against SUVs, it's about thinking about your decisions, and making an educated choice with the impact to the environment in mind. I will not buy more car than I can afford or than I need. I do not forsee the need for a 3rd row of seats. I can understand that it makes carpooling more convenient, but how frequently, in a ration compared to your overall use of the car, are you in an "extra passenger" situation?
Not worth it to me to buy a huge SUV in anticipation for the time or two that my mom will be in the car with my husband, me and all of my children.
But worth it for me to have a small SUV, to feel safer on the road.

Thank you. That was exactly my point. We didn't have huge SUV's to get around. We managed to make it work without a Ford Expedition.

I understand what you're saying and yes a large SUV will cause more damage to a smaller car in an accident, but I still maintain my theory about bad drivers.

You're paying more in insurance b/c of them, not the cars they drive.

I drive a large SUV (a Ford Expedition to be exact) and I'd like to consider myself a relatively safe driver. I do not speed, I do not cut people off, etc. I am just as irriated as you that I have to pay more in insurance b/c of reckless drivers. But I think when it comes to insurance companies, they're going to find a way to make us pay regardless. Heck, my DH's carrier raised his premium b/c he HADN'T had an accident. The explaination was - "well since you haven't had an accident, ever; the odds point in favor of you having one soon". We were like WTH are you talking about?! Chat Icon Chat Icon

As for needing a large vehicle like an Expedition, my husbands business is what requires us to have one. But I will be honest, I love driving it. It's high up and as others have stated, I feel safe in it.

You know, any of us COULD buy a diesel fuel car and have the engine converted to run on used french fry grease.

I htink if I owned a restaurant I would do this.

I saw a segment on some news show about a college kid who bought an old Mercedes and runs it on the grease that local diners, pizzerias etc. donate to him. It is such an eye opener.

As far as biking is concerned, I lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for about 2 years (just moved in Nov.) and bikes are just EXPLODING there. There are so many bikers on the roads that the NYPD had to put up signs to warn bikers that they must follow specific laws, just as drivers do. The longer I would sit on the BQE, the more a bike would seem like a logical idea. Exercise, saving money and being good to the environment all in one. Hmmmm...

Of course it is not a good solution for everyone, but just thought it was interesting that bikes are popping up more and more in the city.

Its funny how things are perceived so differently in such a close proximity. Dh used to bike everyday from Babylon to Roslyn. People looked at him like he was nuts.

If I did not have a small infant, (and did not have to travel any real distance on LI) I would be riding a scooter or motorcycle. DH has a scooter that gets 89 MPG and the motorcycle I was looking at gets 78 MPG.

Chat Icon Babylon to Roslyn on a bicycle? How long did it take him to commute to work?

What route did he take?

I'm guessing he used a touring bike...they're made for long distances.

Re: Observation about "going Green."

Its a never-ending cycle, 10-15 years ago SUV's started being offered as the alternative to mini-vans as a family vehicle. Before then they were really only used for off-roading, and the sort, like the original Jeep Wrangler.
As more SUV's started appearing on the roads, the families in the minivans and the station wagons and the sedans started thinking "what would happen if I got into an accident with one of those." And so on and so on...

So since the SUV trend doesn't look like its going anywhere, I hope that the research and use of alternative energy just continues to get better and better. Then hopefully this arguement won't even exist anymore.

People can drive their SUV's and not worry about being detrimental to the environment.

It took him the same amount of time as the drive....1 1/2 hours. He took the service road of the expressway, and then took DPA south. I have no idea what kind of bike, I am inept in that department.Chat Icon I know it had a special seat though.....

Re: Observation about "going Green."

I just finished reading most of the posts and I just wanted to add something in. To the people that said my parents had mini-vans or station wagons-those cars did and still do not get much better mileage than a SUV does. For example the Honda Pilot gets 16/22 mpg. The Honda Odyssey gets 16/23. The Pilot has a tank of 20.4 gallons, the Odyssey has 21. The sports car that Honda puts out, the S2000, gets 18/25 mpg but it's tank is only 13.2 gallons-and it has to use Premium gas.

So just looking at the above you can see that SUV's are not the only gas guzzlers out there. They get the bad rap because they are the easy target. Minivans are not the solution for families. We actually looked into a minivan when we get our car 3 years ago and didn't get one because that are not as safe as SUV's and you really don't save on gas or the price of the car at all.

As far as the comment about the crazy soccer moms weaving in and out while talking on the phone with the DVD going, etc, I'm sorry but I don't get cut off by nearly as many SUV's as I do people in sports cars while talking on their phones. People that drive Porsche's drive me crazy. Why do you need a car that goes that fast? People that drive sports cars are the ones that drive nuts because the weave in and out of lanes and they constantly cut people off. So let's not blame the soccer moms here.

And one more thing, about how our parents did it and why can't we just have normal sized cars. I don't know about you guys, but I did not have a car seat when I was a child. Car seats take up a lot more room than a baby's butt. My mom drove me home from the hospital in a moses basket on the floor. Kids in NY have to be in car seats until they are about 8 years old. The regulations, which I am not disagreeing with, are practically forcing parents to get SUV's and minivans. When I was a kid we had one mom pick kids up from school and carpool the kids home. We use to just pack kids in the back of the car without seatbelts-that's just how it was. You can't do that today because you need a car seat for all of the kids. It's crazy but that's how it is. And what it's forcing people to do is buy bigger cars. One of the things we should be focusing on is making the cars safer so that the kids don't have to be in seats for that long. That would allow a lot of parents to get smaller cars because the car seats wouldn't take up the whole back seat.

Re: Observation about "going Green."

as an SUV driver I have decided to do what I can in other ways

1- I bring my own bags to the supermarket - and judging by the raffle at traders joes- I am not alone

2- I went to the dreaded wal-mart and bought those new light bulbs- I only need to change out 2 more- and my whole apartment will be running on them

3- I recycle

4- I take the bus to work- 5 days a week

5- I walk to do most errands- there is a major shopping center 2 blocks from my house

so to me- doing all these other things cancels out the SUV and then some- b/c my SUV actually gets decent miles per gallon- 22 on average

so what would be better- geta pirus and stop doing these things? or keep doing what I am doing and drive my SUV on the weekends?

First of all, I'm not "blaming" the soccer moms for the problems the world is facing, I'm just stating something I see almost daily on Long Island. If you see something different I can't argue with that, however it does not make me wrong.
I have said multiple times on this thread(and others) that I personally believe people should make choices that are best for their family. If that means they need one large vehicle to accomodate their children & belongings or whatever than I can agree with that. I personally( and again this is just how *I* feel & it doesn't make it the law) cannot support or understand why so many families have TWO large vehicles that are both big gas burners. And BTW its more than MPG, its about emissions for me too, I try to look at the whole package.
I have two kids, one college age & the other a teenager & while I don't have strollers & diaper bags anymore I do have a 14 year old that likes to bring a pack of friends where ever we go. My car seats 5, that is the way it is. I don't feel like I'm punishing her or neglecting her because my vehicle doesn't seat nine.

Re: Observation about "going Green."

Posted by Beth1210

as an SUV driver I have decided to do what I can in other ways

Chat Icon to you for everything you are doing, I wish I lived within walking distance to shopping!
But as for your question, I think this is where people get confused. Its not a question of what would be better one or the other. What's important is you are taking action steps, its not a contest.
If everyone did what they realistically could incorporate into their daily lives without feeling like they are sacrificing, we would see a huge change.
The problem is the scale is still tipped toward those that do nothing or do very little good that is far outweighed by bad.
