Re: Observation about "going Green."
You know, any of us COULD buy a diesel fuel car and have the engine converted to run on used french fry grease.
I htink if I owned a restaurant I would do this.

BMW just revamped their diesel technology and may market them in the US soon.
this is my hope, since the bomb is partial to them.
in Germany they have hydrogen fueled cells. so cool.

I have to drive an SUV because what car am I going to drive that will hold 2 carseats and a double stroller.
I am not trying to be funny or obnoxious here,
but a car with a backseat and a trunk, no?
again, not trying to be a snot, but we are not the first generation of humans to have twins (regular or Irish ) or big cumbersome strollers.
I looked at MANY cars...and many of those trunks DO NOT have enough room for a DOUBLE stroller and other stuff I need to take along with 2 kids
This is why I have a small SUV that has a good trunk space. I had a sedan but it's just not good. I guess I could get another Crown Victoria like I had but it's a V8 and consumers more gas with a 4.6 L engine.

My beef w/BMW is the emissions, they are now calling themselves "leaders" in lowering US emissions but that's only because most of their cars were barely squaking through by US standards until recently!

Re: Observation about "going Green."
The truth is that people who unnecessarily drive gas guzzling SUVs are bound to get attacked on a green thread and...I hate to say it, but rightfully so.
Notice I said "unnecessarily" and "gas guzzling".
Yes, everything stated in the OP is true. There are cars out there that are less fuel efficient than some SUVs. Yes, helicopters and private jets use way more fuel. That's obvious.
But, when we talk green, we are talking about the everyday things you and I (the people who don't own helicopters and jets) can do to be a little greener. The fact remains that the overwhelming majority of people who own SUVs don't need them and the majority of SUVs ARE in fact gas guzzlers. They are a FAD in this country, it is undeniable.
YES, it suks for the few and far between who may own an SUV but are far greener in their other daily actions than someone like me who doesn't drive an SUV. But like most generalizations, they are based on a truth as a whole. In the case of SUVs, it is the undeniable truth.
So, it stinks that the majority of SUV drivers give the greener SUV owners (like you and some others on this thread) a bad name, but they are in the minority. You can't tip toe around those few when you are addressing the issue of going green. The best you can do is be a little more specific and address the people who own a "gas-guzzling" SUV "unnecessarily".
And, if that doesn't apply to you, then don't take it personally and admit that unfortunately yes, that is true of the majority of SUV owners.
Yes there are other offenders...SUVs are not the only offenders, but they are at the forefront of our minds for a reason, not undeservedly so.
PS - my DH drives a gas-guzzler (and is dying to get rid of it) - it's NOT an SUV but I don't see many of his car on the road...

you've gotta to do what works for your family, I'm not 100% opposed to all SUVs in every situation. I just think they are overused & overrated most of the time.

ITA. I think there are MANY ways of being green. I think turning off the lights or TV if you are not in the room is one way. Limiting or not using lawn chemicals is another way, etc...

Great- this always blows my mind, too. LIke, for businesses in Smithtown, you have to PAY to have paper recycling picked up at the office. Rediculous. I send my boss home wiht a box of paper recycling every week. Since I am basically the office manager, I can manage the majority of the waste. But to charge people to do the right thing?!?!?
I like that your job employs homeless. Mkes me feel good about the world.

one of our local school districts has a bunch of busses that use this bio fuel from cooking grease. Its working out great and they plan to keeping converting older busses as they can.

Re: Observation about "going Green."
and one more thought, then I'm going to clean my house- hybrids are more expensive, the change to green living can be more expensive however "we" are willing to spend our hard earned cash on other wants like big tvs & blue-rays, fancy cellphones & computers. If we really want to see a change that will impact future generations we will have to start paying the price now. That is just the way it is.

The same can be said for converting your home to solar power. It's really expensive. And it doesn't yield a profitable return when selling your home. It is the right thing to do, though. But not everyone can afford it. I agree that certain wastes of money could be better allocated, ie trips to Mexico and big screen TVs. Or even just fancy new appliances and concert tickets. But a $200 / month increase in my car payment is not a hit I can take, even if I do probably waste that much on some frivilous recreational expense.
Especially when it doesn't even out to money saved.
And I have to agree with Diane- I would not put my kids in a Prius.

The same could be said for anything. It costs 4 dollars to eat a meal at McDonalds but if you ate an all organic nutrient filled meal, it would cost twice that.
Doing the right thing always costs more, but the return on investment is tremendous

I have two children & I have driven a small economy car for over 10 years. If there were not so many stressed out soccer moms speeding in huge SUVs with the TVs playing while they are talking on their cell phone & drinking a Chai on our roads we would all feel alot safer in more practial vehicles. Long island weather hardly warrants 4 wheel drive. I just bought a toyota prius that has everything from smart key to a backup camera for $25,000, hardly alot to spend on a vehicle by todays standards.

and from the looks of that diamond thread, some of you are wearing a hybrid vehicle on your left hand!
the arguments put for here are the same arguments about why we do anything we do even if we shouldn't...from shopping at Walmart (it's cheap, even if they are a terrible company) to eating at McDonald's (it's cheap, even if it's terrible for my body)
we like it cheap. we like it fast. we like it easy.
and it's going to literally take the movement of the Earth to change that.
