I realize bicycles are not practical for everyday transportation on LI but there has to be a happy medium.

Re: Observation about "going Green."

Here's a question what do you do if you would be very happy buying a Prius, but your husband will have nothing of it, and you only have one car between the two of you?
If you look at my "excuse" in a previous post, that really comes from him.
He wants a small SUV, one that I guess is really like our matrix wagon, just high up on the ground.
I feel a lot of guilt about agreeing to this. But is it worth the arguments?

He used to not care about anything environmentally related and have turned him on a lot of things. He recylces now. He brings the reusable bags to the supermarket. He agreed to the compact flourescent bulbs. We use all environmentally-friendly cleaning products. We don't use chemicals on our lawn and we don't water frequently.
So basically, I have gotten him "green" on everything BUT a car. I honestly think we live a pretty green lifestyle, but I can't get him to budge on this one thing.
I have brought up the prius or a smilar high-gas mileage car over and over again but he refuses. Cars are his "thing." Is this just someplace where I should pick my battles?

I also agree that the Government is lying about ethanol & biofuel.

Can you explain? I have an opinion on the use of ethanol but I don't know that it's a very educated one.

They are lying about the costs, availability & befefits of corn based ethanol & they are hoping none of us will wonder why a country like Brazil can become almost Oil free on its own over the coarse of a few years by using sugar based ethanol. If sugar cane isn't harvested within a certain amount of time, it rots making it unediable. That process releases the exact same carbon footprint as converting it into ethanol
here's one article-there's plenty to read online

Thanks for the article!

So the US should be harvesting ethanol from sugar cane rather than corn?

My husband does not always agree or understand my actions in regard to green living, he does respect them though. You have to do what works for your family and if that means you are buying a SUV then that's ok. I'm not into a cold turkey unrealistic approach to change. If everyone just modified their lifestyle a little bit it would have a huge impact.

I also don't trust the government. The governement which is basically owned by the car companies, and the fuel companies. I believe that "hybrid" cars are wastes- there's no way they can't be better. I believe they are holding back advancements in engineering so as to make a buck on selling these first generation "hybrids". I'm supposed ot want to pay $15,000 more for a car that gets 35-40 miles to the gallon? My mini gets that.
In 10 years teh hybrid will be that- and will get 70 miles ot the gallon. But only after they sell everyone the versions that get 45. And then 50. And then 60.

No, because the only part of the US with the correct climate to grow sugar cane is Hawaii. But we can grow corn throughout the entire midwest. It's all about using whatever renewable resources you have available to your region.

Our president that comes from a long line of oil men & is in bed with the Arab oil nations & the oil companies should stop feeding us propaganda about ethanol putting a strain on our farmers. They should tell us the truth & look at the obvious solutions. There are plenty of poor central & south American countries that would greatly benefit by selling the sugar they can easily grow to us.

Just as an aside, the US government(including military) uses over 440,000 barrels of oil a day.
Maybe its time to rethink what we are doing.

I agree, but GW is not alone to blame. Both major politicaL parties are funded greatly by the big oil and car companies. Yes, GW happens to come from a direct link to oil, but the whole government is in bed with oil, it's not his doing. He's not that smart. Chat Icon

I have to drive an SUV because what car am I going to drive that will hold 2 carseats and a double stroller.

I am not trying to be funny or obnoxious here,

but a car with a backseat and a trunk, no?

again, not trying to be a snot, but we are not the first generation of humans to have twins (regular or Irish Chat Icon ) or big cumbersome strollers.

I looked at MANY cars...and many of those trunks DO NOT have enough room for a DOUBLE stroller and other stuff I need to take along with 2 kids

For a further note on the plus side of ethanol, there ARE cars on the market today that are duel fuel. So they can use both regular gasoline OR ethanol.
I really wanted to look into getting one of these, but unfortunately the nearest ethanol station to us is in NJ. I am hoping by the next time I need to get a car it will be more widely available.

Also, a fuel cell car is being rolled out in S. California soon, I hope that those will catch on as well.

please let me ask you what other stuff do you NEED to take with 2 kids.

NEED.

does it start and end with diapers, wipes, and food?

(digressing from Diane's post)

cars are NOT vacation spots. I don't understand why we need DVD's in our cars, toys, game boys and every other thing.

what happened to sitting quiet, reading a book...TALKING. sing alongs...personal human interactions....

does Jimmy and Suzie NEED any of this stuff?

Just from the little I know, this seems much more attractive than subsidizing farmers to grow yet more corn to make ethanol or to foster dependence on South American countries who sell us sugar cane.

Re: Observation about "going Green."

I agree that we have a skewed perception of what we NEED. We're taught from an early age to be relentless consumers, and the message kids get today is scary.

I was in the mall getting my phone fixed when a mom was in htere with her daughter (if she was 8 she was old) getting the daughter's phone fixed. The girl had a snazzy phone, a Juicy bag and yes, COACH sneakers.

This is an extreme case, but still, I think even with electronics kids have an expect too much.

well, I also want to choose what is SAFE for my kids.....as well. Do you have kids?? When you do, you will realize what you NEED. No I will not get a car with a DVD player, because I am NOT a big fan of them myself.
Like I said earlier in my post...when they start making hybrids MORE AFFORDABLE..i will get one. DH and I would LOVE to get the Hybrid Tahoe...but do YOU have $50,000 for me to purchase one??

we as the people that should be deciding the destiny of this country need to look closely at ALL available alternatives & then start employing SOMETHING different than our addiction to oil.
If you think the wars over oil are bad, wait till we're fighting over clean water.
Its time to change the way we live.
I personally would much rather support countries that are so depressed we are being inundated by illegal aliens searching for a better life instead of creating billionare terrorists in the middle east.

I have never given birth to a child, no.

but I helped raise my 4 younger brothers and sisters...so I have been placed in the situation of being a mother very often. and you can disregard that as not being a parent if you like...everyone except my parents, that know what I really did, does. It doesn't bother me.

Diane, I am not attacking you or what you do. I am just saying that we should all re-evaluate what we really need to get by and be happy vs. what commercials and the Jones tell us we do.

there are probably many insidious reasons why hybrids are so expensive...I think Big Oil could possibly even have something to do with the stalling of the development and the exhorbitant prices of the technology. It's all money and it's out of control.

Again, I did not mean to make you feel attacked and I apologize if I did in trying to get my point across. Chat Icon
