My bad Dr's appt this afternoon...

So, I at my appt today - my amniotic fluid was back down AGAIN. It was 15% last week - now it's 7%. The sono tech told me they use 10 as the barometer of what's good and bad. More of concern though was my blood pressure - it was 140 over 90 and very normal last week. But, the nurse took it again a moment later, while raising my arm a little, and and then it was 124/77 - right after! So nurse practitioner, who I saw today, was like "what's up with the blood pressure?" Umm - I went back to work yesterday? I've been up since 2 am with sciatica pain and insomnia? I do not have protein in my urine so it's NOT pre-eclampsia, but they do not want to wait for that point. So, the NP called the dr, who was not in the office - I figured they'd have me come back on Thursday or something - nope - I need to have my BP checked tomorrow and if my pressure isn't down, I'm having the baby. Right - like it's going to be down in 24 hrs??? Esp since I'm going to be stressing about this now? I'm so tired and I just want to lay down but I have so much to do!
Ugh - please pray that the pressure goes down, but like I said, I feel like it's not even a chance it will being stressed about this!

Due date is Jan 28 - so I know baby is full term - I'm just so stressed because it will put me back at work almost a full month earlier.

Do you think you can convince you doctor to give you a week to get your blood pressure down?

IDK - I think it's a combo of the pressure and the fact that the amniotic fluid level keeps fluctuating. I can see her saying - ok - stop working and see if your pressure goes down - but that almost defeats the purpose because the FMLA clock starts ticking once I go out of work - whether or not I have the baby.

Thanks ladies & RachChat Icon

OK - I just got in touch with DH at work. He is a firefighter/paramedic so he has medical field experience - We talked about it and he thinks I should take off work tomorrow. I was debating going in late a little but now he's thinking just take off, have a calm morning and we can go into the doctor together. I hate hate hate to use a sick day right now when I only have three - but if it gets me a few more days before the baby comes, then maybe it's worth it - he also thinks that the blood pressure reading was a "phantom" one - that the fact that the second reading was much lower immediately afterwards, he thinks they should have taken the pressure in the other arm, which they didn't. So now I say to myself, if that's all it was, will I kick myself in the *** for not going into work and using a whole day. Ugh - IDK - It's not even a case of being able to stay out after baby and not have paid days - it's that the sick days add to the 60 days FMLA - if I am not back at the end - I give up my position and my insurance. Idk what to do. Wish I had a blood pressure cuff at home!

I agree with your DH, and think taking a day off tomorrow will be well worth it. If it was a phantom reading, make sure you have them take it more then once at the appointment to make sure it is not their mistake.

Also, have a HIGH protein dinner and breakfast today and tomorrow. Protein has been shown to promote healthy blood pressure, and prevent Preeclampsia.

I just spoke to one of my friends on the phone and she has a pressure cuff and told me she'd bring it to me - lol - but I think that would just make more obsessive.

Def take it easy! At this point in pregnancy, they don't fool around with BP. Mine was 110/70 my entire pregnancy with DD. 37 wk appt it spiked, and they induced two days later.

Hang in there and take it easy!

Re: My bad Dr's appt this afternoon...

definitely take it easy and relax... out of curiousity, did they take your pressure before or after they told you your amniotic fluid was low??? I just know that if they told me that then my pressure would be through the roof as well

good luck tomorrow... relax and try and pamper yourself!!!

Take the day tomorrow, there is no way it will be a wasted day. You NEED to rest. I command you to! Chat Icon
And considering your pressure went down right away, I'm inclined to think it was a faulty reading.
When I get nervous or anxious at the dr., my pressure skyrockets and they end up doing it again at the end of the appt. and it's normal again. Hang in thereChat Icon

I had the pressure taken first thing but I knew they were going to do another sono to check the fluid and that the level could be a factor - so it certainly was on my mind.

Absolutely!!!! Right now there is nothing more important than you and the LO. I know exactly how you feel about "wasting" the day, but in the grand scheme of things...it's a day.

Try to relax and don't worry about your pressure today - I had a high reading and then my OB re-took it and it was fine - sometimes the nurses just take it too quickly and get an inaccurate reading. It wouldn't actually vary that much within minutes. Good luck tomorrow!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My bad Dr's appt this afternoon...

I was taken out a month early from work and put on bedrest b/c of BP issues. I was also induced 2 weeks early since I did have protein in my urine, severe swelling and some issues with my bloodwork. Once I was taken out of work, I went in twice per week for monitoring. If my BP was really high, I was going to be sent over to L&D to have the baby.

The doctors wouldn't allow me to go past 38 weeks b/c I was developing pre-eclampsia, but they thought I was going to be induced even earlier. Here are some things that actually helped me make it to 38 weeks:
1. Staying off my feet and keeping them elevated above my heart. That should help with any swelling you may have. Forget about things that you wanted to get done. We moved into our house while I was on bedrest - 5 days before my induction. The little I did was while I was lying on the couch. Your health comes first. Also, try to lie on your left side.

2. Drink a lot of water.

3. Your doctor/NP will likely do a BP check right away. You may be nervous, which could raise your BP. Have them do another check later on in the appointment. If you're willing and they're willing to let you go on bedrest or modified bedrest, have them take your BP once you've been lying down on your left side for a few minutes. If your BP is within the acceptable range, push for them to put you on bedrest instead of delivering immediately and get another pressure check in a few days.

I know how nerve wracking this can be. Take it easy and good luck!
