Had a BAD Doctor's appt last week (A VENT- EVERYTHING OK WITh BABY!!)

So, my Drs office makes you see all the drs in the practice, just in case. Even the one older one who will NOT deliver my baby, becase he doesn't do deliveries anymore.

Last week I had an appt and they scheduled me to see him. Earlier that day, I got the news (from MY dr that I failed the 1 hour and needed to take the 3 hour- she was very nice as we expected this- I have PCOS and most pppl in my family have Diabetes)
I told her I had an appt later on and she said she'd leave the script for me with my chart.

I get to the Doctor and as soon as he walks in the room he yells at me bc my cell phone vibrated and there are signs saying turn all cell phones off. Then he proceeds to tell me I've gained a "tremendous amount of weight" I'm up 18 lbs at 26 weeks (6 lbs in the past 5 weeks) . Then he starts to lecture me about the test results. I tried to explain and he told me "no excuses". He said I have to take the 3 hour and i said I knew that. He then said "You have to take it within 1 week of today. and for the rest of the week you must eat very healthy- no cakes, cookies, pastas, breads, candy, etc." He said "this will be very hard for yo because of the holidays, but too bad. I want to see you in two weeks and make sure you are not gaining too much and I think we both know you will likely fail the 3 hour and we will put you on a diet" He just went on and on and even said "I doubt any of this is from swelling- then felt my ankles and said well, maybe a little, but you are still eating too much"

Ok, I am overweight. Before my BFP, i was wearing a size 12 or 14. Not ideal, but by no means morbidly obese. I was speechless. I don't know how I managed to hold it together, but I did. I walked out of the door and lost it. I was HYSTERICAL. I know that I am not the ideal weight and that GD is serious and i DON'T want it. But he made me feel so bad. He just seemed like one of those doctors that hates overwieght ppl. I am really all belly tho. I haven't gained weight anywhere else. My feet and hands are swollen. I don't know why. I drink tons of water and I really don't eat bad things. Dh couldn't even beleive I've gained 18 lbs..he said I never eat. My MS is terrible, I am usually so tired, I don't eat a full dinner.

Ugh, I have tears in my eyes now just thinking about how mean he was to me.

I am so, so sorry he treated you that way.

Please print out this post and bring it with you to your next appointment! You need to tell another OB (preferably the one in charge) and you don't want to forget any details.

Your weight gain is totally average! Plus I bet a lot of it is swelling - and, hello, does he not know that some of that is the huge increase in blood volume?! Even if you have GD (which isn't because you are overweight, it would be due to your family history!) there is nothing you can do about it. Pregnant women don't cause themselves to have GD!

I hope you pass the 3 hour, but even if you don't, you and the baby will be fine

Please kick that OB the next time you see him. What an azzhat!

Wow I am so sorry you were treated this way. I would definately talk to somebody else in the practice about the way you were treated.

DEFINATELY need to make a complaint with the office. DEFINATELY!!!

Telling us is good to get if off your chest... but that won't help you in the long run... You HAVE to talk to someone from the office and let them know about this... otherwise it seems he will be speaking to you like this the entire time.

Can't you refuse to see him?? Since he isn't even delivering?? I would!

That was completely uncalled for, and you need to complain. Also make them put a note in your chart that by under no circumstances are you to see that particular doctor again.

Make sure you speak to whomever is in charge. I am so angry for you!

a dr. should never treat you like that. i would refuse to use that Dr again OR find a new practice



mine would never do that! I said jokingly that if i was going to be getting fatter than i may as well look pretty (reguarding getting my hair done) and he firmly said to me - you are not fat you are pregnant!

I am so so so sorry for you. Nobody deserves to be treated like that. I agree that you should make a complaint with the doctors office, and you can also make one with the insurance company as well.

wow, i would DEMAND to speak with the practice manager. that is NO way to speak to anyone!

also, demand that you no longer see him or tell them you will take your business elsewhere!

ETS, i was a 14 pre-preggo and although they did tell me to watch my weight, they have not said one thing since my first appointment. I have only gained about 4 lbs at 22 weeks but no mention, they dont even look at it. Its unbelievable that he would speak to you like that. I am so mad for you

I'm so sorry he treated you that way!

I go to every doctor's appointment waiting to be lectured and it hasn't happened yet. I was also a 12/14 pre pregnancy and I don't even know how much I've gained...I'm going to guess about 20 lbs though at 26 wks. I'll find out next week.

You should definitely file a complaint and NOT see that particular doctor again!

Wow that is obsurd! I would not make another appointment with this jack@ss and I would tell your doctor. No one should be made to feel like that! I am the same as you and my doctor was fine!

oh my goodness what an a hole I agree that you should definitely file a complaint with the office manager and make sure you NEVER have to see him for future appointments. As far as the weight gain and GD, don't let any of his bullsh*t get to you. When I was diagnosed with GD, I felt so guilty thinking I had done something wrong. My OB told me that sometimes no matter how well you eat, you just can't avoid it and it's just your body's reaction to pregnancy especially if you have a family history of diabetes.

please don't let one jerk with an MD behind his name make you feel bad.

i can't beleive the nerve of the dr. he better be happy he didn't have me as a patient. I would def. complain about him and make it very clear you NEVR want to be seen by him again.

I would def complain to the head of the practice and make sure that you never have an appt with that dr again.

When I found out I was pg this time around my ins had changed and I had to find a new OB. I made an appt with a dr at Suffolk OB Gyn and as the dr was doing the pap smear she looks up and says "at your weight you really should not gain much weight". I responded with "With my 1st pg I only gained 12 lbs" and she says "Well don't use that as an excuse to eat whatever you want". First of all who says that to a newly pregnany woman. Yes I was very overweight before my BFP but that is not the time or the place to broach this subject (as she was doing a pelvic exam). Needless to say I walked out the door and called a different dr's office and made an appt.

i would speak to someone about this in the office..
how horrible for this doctor to treat you that way.. i dont know how you stayed in that room with him.

you are doing just fine.. never see that doctor again!!

WHAT????? That is absolutely horrible. I cannot imagine what he would have said to me....I gained 43 lbs EACH pregnancy. I lost it all the first time and now at 6 months PP, I have 6 lbs to go. Don't worry about the weight gain... you will lose it. I understand GD is serious...but I am sure IF you are diagnosed, you will take the proper precautions.
I agree w/ the rest of the girls. Let the office know he made you feel awful and you do not want to see him again. Some ppl are just miserable and have no ppl skills. He apparently broke the mold.

What a JERK!!! I am so sorry you had to deal w/ this dinosaur or a doctor. He should just hop on the misery train & retire already. His behavior was completely unacceptable. You should never have been spoken to like that. Did you speak to anyone else in the practice after this happened? Or are you planning to? I defin think the other doctors need to know about this. Hopefully by you speaking up another woman can be spared this awful treatment.

I am sooo sorry you were treated this way. Shame on that doctor, what a poor excuse for a man!

I don't believe in this bull that "you gain weight, cause you eat bad," I had terrible morning sickness with DS too, and I gained 50 lbs. Guess what, within a month I dropped all my weight. Don't let them push you around, and don't let them upset you, I'm sure you look wonderful, and your weight is FINE! God I wish I could go slap him for you!
