Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
So we booked brunch there a few weeks ago for this morning. I had heard such great reviews of it and it was AWFUL, worst dining experience EVER.
1) we had a 10:30 reservation, we get there and they go, well we cant seat you bc we need to wait for other tables to finish....OK fine, its mothers day, its busy...Ill let it slide.
2) It takes the waiter FOUR tries to get just the DRINKS right and we are talking just OJ and coffee all around.
3) Food was AWFUL. It was ICE COLD. Not even lukewarm...ICE COLD. The pancakes and waffles were hard as a rock, you could literally bang them on the table or throw them at someone and injure them. The bacon was all crumbled like bacon bits. They screwed up DH very basic omelette order. The milk, when DH poured it into his coffee curdled.
4) We sucked it up and tried to have a nice brunch, but at the end my brother went to the manager to not complain but just air his frustrations with brunch and the manager looks at him and goes (and I quote) "oh well" and that was it.
I will never ever go back there. It was such a disappointment and then I felt bad bc I suggested it in the first place.

agree, agree, agree! ! !
Although the coffee was good.
& when we called to make reservations my sister SPECIFICALLY asked if the price was different on Mother's day, they said no $19.95, the bill came & it was $24.95 (which isn't a huge deal) but it's just the point AND they charged my 2.5 year old nephew as a full adult!!!!!!
So disappointed. I've been there for lunch before and it was delicious. Apparently they fail miserably at buffets & customer service.

Re: Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
This sounds HORRENDOUS; but overall I am SOooo not a fan of restaurant brunch/lunch/dinners on Mother's Day (or especially VALENTINE'S DAY as well). Every restaurant, even ones I've had GREAT experiences at, seem to fall on their faces on the "big" holidays!!! So frustrating, especially when everyone is just trying to have a nice meal and relax. I haven't gone out to a restaurant ON either holiday in YEARS, though I'll frequently go out the day or the weekend before the "big day" so we can have a nice normal meal and enjoy it without the hullaballoo and frustration!!! Hope the REST of your day was 100x better!!!!!

My mom has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years and calls Valentines Day and Mothers Day "amateur nights."
No one in my family ever goes out to eat on major holidays becasue of this. It's asking for trouble.
Sorry you had a bad brunch!!!!

Re: Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
OMG!!! We were there too - 10:30 reservation in the Victorian Room and they didn't seat us until 10:50. We had 19 people and made the reservation weeks ago. Someone else was complaining because their DC needed a high chair and they said they didn't have one. We heard at least four different people complaining to the staff while we were there (we were sitting right next to the bar). I was very disappointed because all I've ever heard is rave reviews about them. All I can think is maybe they know how to run a small place (the original) and don't know how to run the large, expanded space. My DH said we're never going there again. Very disappointing.

I can't believe the manager would just say "Oh Well". I would find the name of the owner b/c that would have ****** me off beyond belief.

ITA! We avoid restaurants on actual holidays! We'd rather eat at home. We are not fans of some restaurants that jack up the prices, have "special" menus and different seating times.
I'm sorry this happened! Hope the rest of your day got better.

I agree! We did 56th Fighter last year and it was sooo expensive and it was horrible. We were so tired of bad Mothers Day dining that we decided to stay in yesterday. This year I made my own brunch--cost me half of what I would pay to take my mom out. My DH did most of the work too So sorry you had a bad experience.

It was probably the owner that you spoke to. In a normal situation that would work, but I don't think you will get anywhere with those owners. JMHO.

Re: Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
sorry, to hear that.
I tried that place a couple times and wasn't thrilled. The pastries always taste stale & the pancakes/waffles are cold.
Do a redo this weekend !! You deserve it:
Argyle Grill in babylon, brunch every sunday $20 a person. and the spread is AMAZING.
We had brunch at Carriage House for Mother's day that was great too! I think they have a brunch every sunday too!

Re: Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
that sucks. I will say Harbor Links in Port Washington puts out a good brunch on the holidays... however i think the mothers day brunch was advertised at $40pp which is a bit steep

Re: Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
I'm sorry Next time you want to do a brunch for MOther's Day I highluy rec Danfords in PJ. I went there for Easter and was so nervous bc it was our first venture out for a holiday with very very picky eaters and it was really good
Don't feel bad about suggesting it, from the reviews you obviousy did your HW! I would def write up a bad review and post it somewhere for others

That's awful! I've always only had really good experiences there - maybe time of day or because I've never been on a holiday?
I actually haven't been there in a while and was thinking I needed to go back.. but after reading your review I think I'll skip it.
Hope the rest of your day was better than brunch!

Re: Mothers Day Brunch Rant - Milk and Sugar Cafe
wow, thanks everyone. No way in heck Id go back.....just ot be clear, we actually eat at Milk and Sugar, not the Victorian room across the street (which they also own). Both apparently both places were crappy by the sounds from the other poster in the thread.
Oh and they didnt have 2 high chairs for us either, even though we had given them a heads up when I booked the reservation and asked if they had high chairs.
Youre right it is or tends to be amateur night for restaurants. We've done brunch both at Danfords and Snapper Inn before, on holidays and they were always very good. We figured wed try some place new...FAIL. I would be willing to overlook mothers day disaster and go back fro lunch had it not been for the p!ss poor reaction from the manager.

that might have been us! We had a 10:30 reservation and they told us they were waiting for a table and there were like 10 open tables ! They told us their highchairs were across the street at the restaurant and that they would check and bring one over for us and we never heard back so I finally asked and they said " oh ya, we don't have one" . The hostess was such a b!tch! She didn't crack a smile and was not helpful at all! I cant' believe they had ONE guy working the omelette station! They didn't even have plain eggs, if you didn't want an omelette. The places was beautiful though. I've been to the restaurant and really liked it so I was disapointed. MIL seems to enjoy herself so that's what matters, I guess.
