Depends on where it is - if it's at the house I give $100. If it's in a restaurant $200-$250.
Really??!! $250!! For an engagement party???? That's crazy. I give that much for a wedding gift, I wouldn't even think to give that much for an engagement party.
The times I've gone to an engagement party I buy something nice for their house, maybe some pretty wine glasses or a serving platter. I don't spend more than $40-50.
ETA - I never give cash for an engagement party, only for the wedding gift.
I must agree with Hofstra. $250 for an engagement party? Not from me. I would buy a small registry gift, or give $50-$75 max.
That said, not to offend anyone, but I am not a fan of engagement parties.

Re: Monetary gift for engagement party
For a friends brother? I would not give more than $50. There's still going to be a shower and wedding.
I think the gift giving is way too over the top and I dont think that formal engagement parties are necessary.

Monetary gift for engagement party
,For my engagement party many many moons ago I received mostly monetary gifts and they were pretty generous $100 + . The last engagement party I went to I gave $250 only bc it was to someone who has always been extremely generous to my family. If I were basically going to a friends engagement party with DH I would give appx $100-150. Cash is always great but If I could get a nice gift at the bottom of my price range I would go with that --

Re: Monetary gift for engagement party
Everybody is different but I personally give $100-200 depending on my relationship with the couple. I only give a non-cash gift for the bridal shower....this is the norm for my family/friends.

Depends on the relationship. My DH usually give between $100-$200. Doesn't matter where the party is held to me.

I agree with you. And i would never give 250 for an engagement party. You ladies must be very wealthy. I would give 75 tops or get something off registry. Now weddings are a different story. I give 350 and up.

$50 no matter where it is as it is not my responsibility to pay for their engagement party. I am giving a gift for them to use for their upcoming life together.
exactly this I would most likely give $50 maybe $75.
but I am also the one who doesn't feel like they have to cover their plate at a wedding (another ridiculous concept). for weddings I give $75-$100 max per person
This sounds about right
