Engagement party gift

What do you give and how much do you spend? It is held at a house. It is a work friend of my DH. I don't know his fiance. I was thinking a GC, but how much? Thanks...

Re: Engagement party gift

I would probably just give a check for $50-100, it would depend how close a friend they were.

Re: Engagement party gift

I would spend about $50-$75 for a co worker. You could purchase some nice toasting flutes for that price.

Re: Engagement party gift

DH and i had a combination engagement party/going away party (he was going to georgia for 4 months of job training). can i just say i had NO idea we were going to get ANY gifts at all??

personally, if i knew i was going to be invited to the wedding (and probably the shower too) i would spend between $25 and $50. otherwise it can get way out of hand!!

I rememeber reading that traditionally, an engagement party is a non-gift event. It was to simply announce and celebrate the engagement.

Times change though - no one is comfortable attending an event empty handed just as party hosts are giving favors at parties that didn't have them in the past.

Someone gave us a gift cert to Arthir Murray for dance lessons. It was a thoughtful gift. While DH STILL has 2 left feet we had fine trying to overcome that and learning to dance to our wedding song Chat Icon

oh, i totally understand this - which is why i would say only $25-$50, depending on how close you are to the engaged couple. i wouldn't want to show up empty handed either, but if i hadn't had an engagement party of my own, i can honestly say i would never have known to bring a gift to one Chat Icon

Ditto Red Envelope has some nice gifts if you don't want to do cash.

Re: Engagement party gift

it depends how close the eparty/shower/wedding are

for example...i was just told of an eparty for DH's friend at the end of June. They were engaged last summer. Their wedding is the end of this SEPTEMBER. Yep, 3 months apart. I'm sorry, but can she really expect someone to shell out $500 in gifts within 3 months? Chat Icon

That said, our eparty was in my parents' backyard and the average gift was approx $50/couple. (we were pretty 50/50 gifts/cash)

Re: Engagement party gift

I'd give a gift of around $50. Check if they're registered anywhere, too.
