Moms who use family member for child care
For those who have mom or mil watch kids while you work... do you pay them if so how much? I would feel so bad not paying my parents anything, even though they probably wouldnt take it. I just feel like its such an important and difficult job. What do you think is fair??

My FIL watches my son 2 days a week and we dont pay him. It might be different if it was 5 days.

My Family watched Andrew and no I do not pay them.
I tried and they were so insulted that I even offered. I do pay for all the diapers, food, bottles, wipes, etc for them.

My MIL watches Jacob 3 days a week and i do not pay her. She says watching him grow is payment enuf! Works for me!!
And if she ever asked for money then i would just take him to a daycare, i feel if i'm going to pay then i want him to be stimulated and around other children his age.

My mom watches my DD 12 hours a week and I do not pay her. She yelled at me when I mentioned it. I surprise my parents with tickets and little gifts often to say thank you. Edited to add that my mom is retired.

My mom and my MIL watch Katherine and I do not pay either one. My cousin watches her on Fridays and she watches kids for a living. I pay her $40 for about 9am-3pm.

my mom watches my kids two days a week and i pay her 200 a month. at first she wouldn't take it but then i reminded her that she feeds them all day long as well! 200 is much better that paying a daycare!

I used to watch my nephew almost everyday and never got paid but when I need my car fixed or have a flat or anything else BIL does it so it was kind of a barter system

We pay my mom $10 an hour when she watches DD the days I work. We don't pay her if she watches her and we go out on a date. She just does that for us. My mom needs the money and babysits for us instead of getting a PT job so it wouldn't be fair not to pay her.

my mom will be watching DD for us- if we did pay her- she'd just wind up taking the money and putting it back into an acccount for DD.
but we will probably get her a nice GC to a restaurant every other month or so.

My mom watches Ryan. She would never take a dime for doing so. she even buys the diapers, food, A&D, wipes, etc. I have tried to offer to buy those things but she never lets me.

My SIL watches DD and yes we pay her. She watches her 3 days and Monday night (my nephew has Kung Foo and she has to take DD with her).

My mom watches Ryan everyday. I have offered to pay her, but she doesn't want it. We are trying to make up for it at the holidays with generous gifts!

I figured they would say that. I dont understand how any family member would take money to watch their own family.UNLESS it took the place maybe of them working somewhere where they needed the income, only then can I understand it

I could have written this myself
and I agree with the money part. if it was SIL/BILs or siblings, I would feel bad and give them money, we all have mortgages to pay and mouths to feed. It would only be fair. But the grandparents wont hear of it. But every situation is different. I know several grandmas that are babysitting instead of working at their jobs, in which case they do need the money.
as in all things, theres no right or wrong.

Same here, we've taken them (grandmas) to Disney with us (they came 5 of the 10 days there, everything was our treat)
and we're always there for them, errands, getting them little things from the kids here and there.
my moms famous words are, I dont want money, I want respect 
to her thats more than payment. a hug and kiss and TLC from her little ones.

to answer your question, maybe you can buy them something they need or do something they need done (my sister sometimes gets a cleaning lady as a treat for my mom, takes her out for mani/pedi's) etc. it depends on them and what works for them.

My mom watches Sydney and we DO pay her. She hates taking the money but we asked her to quit her job to watch our angel and after a lot of thinking she did. She needs some money, if Syd werent here she would obviously still be working.
We pay her a set amount/week and IMO its not nearly enough but she wont take a penny more.
When we go out at night or weekends etc. we never pay either set of grandparents, they love to do it.
We are extremely lucky with our situation, my mom comes to our house every morning, Sydney is showered with love and kisses and stimulated and played with all day long w/ my mom, and then when we come home as well, that, IMO is priceless 
ETA: if your family member already doesnt work and doesnt "need" the money they probably wont accept it anyway. I like the restaurant GC idea every now and then, or spa GC occassionally, just to show you're thankful.

My sister and I are sending my parents to Vegas. We are putting a gift basket with Tour Books, etc and the intinerary.
They are doing us the greatest service by watching our children and they do it for free. We are truly greatful and there is nothing we can do to thank them enough.

My sister watches DD 3 days a week and she will not take a dime...when it comes to holidays and her birthday we give her REALLY nice gifts plus we have set up an account for my neice and put in $$$ every pay check and my sister has no idea

I give my mom $300 a week to watch my 14 month old twins. I figured I would be paying a daycare that or more and I find the peace of mind more valuable.
