Mommies with boys...I need your help

DS is 8 days old. Now let me start off saying that I have all girls in my family and NEVER had to change a boys diaper in my life. At least once a day DS pees outside of his diaper. I try to point his peni s down when I change him to avoid this. Am I doing something wrong? Is it the diaper? Does anyone have any pointers for me?

Also, lets talk about open aired accidents. This happened to me today also. I put a wipe on him while I was changing him and thought I was so clever. Well, DS won because he just peed all over his onesie and changing pad cover.

Any advice for this mom who has never done this much laundry in one week?

You will get use to it... Try putting a washcloth over his pee pee.. More absorbent then a wipe.. The pee pee moves while in the diaper. Make sure the diaper is snug.. Not too big and not too small.. The weights on the diaper mean nothing!!! Try and change him in a warm room... You will learn how to change him really fast!!!!!

What diapers are you using & what size? I found pampers swaddlers to be the best. We also barely used newborn diapers. I would try a size 1 if he is not already in that. We also bought pee pee teepees to cover him while changing his diaper so it wouldn't squirt up. You can also try a washcloth over his pee pee.

Maybe the diaper isn't tight enough? I used to put a washcloth over the goods when changing DS so even if he did pee at least the washcloth got it and nothing else!

This is going to sound crazy, but point his peepee up. I thought this was ridiculous advice until I realized it worked! I have 4 boys and it's something that has worked for me!

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

Before taking the old diaper off, have a new one opened up. For pee only diapers I would put the new one like a clam shell on top of the old diaper and then slide the old one out from underneath. I also used wash cloths to contain the pee. You have to be fast and a pro tip, keep your mouth closed while actually changing. My dad was fond of telling the story where my brother had perfect aim and got him in the mouth.

I heard that you should open the old one, let it get some air then put it back on. Give it a few seconds then take it off. By then if he went again, he should be done and you can avoid the golden shower.

Mommies with boys...I need your help

One tip I got from another mom that helped was to get cloth diapers and lay one down on top of the changing pad cover where the baby's butt would go. This helped save the changing pad cover when he would pee on me. It's bound to happen here and there.

Chat Icon I think all of us boy mom's have or are dealing with this on occasion.. I just had to laugh.. because DS smiles when he does it...
Same thing everyone has said re: diaper size and being quick.
I actually point his pee pee down. I also lay these disposable pads down on the table. Has been working well. Wont save the wall - but saves the cover.

How are those pee pee teepees? I was thinking of buying them???

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

My DS would do this as a newborn. We'd be changing him at 2-3 AM and he'd pee during a diaper change and his onesie would be wet. We'd have to change everything and then he'd be screaming bc he was cold. It was a nightmare!!

Then I got the following tip on here and it was a lifechanger. When changing a pee diaper, make sure you have a clean diaper opened up and placed underneath the pee diaper BEFORE you open the pee diaper. So when you open up the wet diaper, you can quickly literally yank it out from under him and simultaneoulsy cover him with the clean diaper. After a few seconds put on any cream if you need do, quickly, and then tape up the diaper. Quick is key.

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

try another brand of diapers!

with my 1st, he would pee through huggies. Pampers did the trick for him.

With my 2nd, any kind of diapers are fine.

Try another brand! Chat Icon

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

As far as peeing out of the diapers perhaps go up a size. My DS outgrew the NB diapers in a few days, even though he was still well within the weight limit.

And as others have said use something larger to cover him when you change. We used a cloth diaper and we always have a cloth diaper under him that way we don't have to change the diaper pad cover as often.

Also, this stage doesn't last that long. It was only a few months. DS is 19 months now and I can't remember the last time he peed during a change.

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

I agree with having the next diaper ready. My biggest advice is to take some wipes and dry them out. When you change DS, put the dry wipe on him, clean with a wet one, and then pat dry him with another dry wipe. Also, after the diaper is on, make sure the sides are as flat as possible and the ruffles are out along the legs. I have two DS, and this has worked for me. HTH!

ETA: Sometimes the diaper ointment (ex. A&D) might be the issue. It doesn't allow the diaper to absorb the urine.

Mommies with boys...I need your help

Now that it is gettign cold out I would try a wipe warmer.....I swore they were a WASTE of money. I had a Dec baby and he would pee at every changing in the early times. And the pee was only when he got hit with a wipe. My MIL bought me a warmer and once we started using warm wipes the Peeing stopped. We have not been peed on since the first month. I only use the warmer in the cold months and use room temp wipes all other months.

Make sure diaper is tight and the correct size. DS was 6lbs and we baely used NB diapers.....in the hositpal they gave us size ones.

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

everyone gave great advice. i found that you learn how to change them really quick! we've had pee everywhere, all over the changing table, me, him, the wall Chat Icon

do you use the changing pad liners? they go over the changing pad cover (boppy makes one version). these were a life saver for me. much less laundry to change these a few times a day than the cover itself.

i've never had any leaks. we use Pampers baby dry. i change him pretty frequently, but even at night 12 hours, no leaks.

hahaha this is so cute and funny (not to you of course whos currently going through it)
I ahve 2 boys so I've been there! I say change the diaper brand first and see if that helps. Try putting a washcloth on top instead of a wipe, the washcloth would absorb better in case the baby pees :)

Mommies with boys...I need your help

During my son's first couple weeks, he would leak out of his diaper. He was super long but pretty thin so the diapers just weren't fitting him right. Now that he's bigger, he outgrew the problem and almost never (I mean once a month MAYBE) leaks through anymore.

As for open air shots, a family member got him peepee teepees which work a handful of times but with DS kicking so much, the teepee just falls off so quickly. I don't really bother. He still pees on the wall or my face or the pad sometimes lol and I just cover it with a wipe or with my hand so I can contain it. I don't like covering his penis with a wipe the entire time I'm changing him because I like for it to get some nice dry air on it during the change. I think this is more important so I just take my chances.

Oh and I come from a family of all girls, too - including all my cousins!!

Re: Mommies with boys...I need your help

Thank you ladies for all the advice. I will try a different brand of diapers. DS isn't even 7lbs yet would he really fit into one's at this point? Since the one's are bigger wouldn't he be more likely to pee outside of the diaper? I used the washcloth method and that has helped. I started setting up the diaper in advanced and that has helped also.

I used Swaddlers in the beginning and he would always leak. Pampers baby dry are the best for DS. DS only peed when being changed if it was cold. Other than that he is fine.

My DS did this all the time. I read that to prevent leakage to point his peepee down and make sure the front and back of the diaper is pulled up all the way and covering everything. Once I started doing that no more leakage.

As far as not getting peed on I have a diaper ready and open and place a washcloth just in case and change him quickly. Most of the time it works but sometimes I'm not quick enough lol.
