Re: Microwaving a sponge

I did the microwave thing the other day and it made it smell awful. For me the dishwasher worked better.

Re: Microwaving a sponge

Yeah, I do it... I place the sponge in a bowl with soapy water and then pop it in the microwave for 45 seconds. I don't know if it does anything, but the sponge doesn't smell yucky after it comes out.

I do it and I think it works. You have to be careful not to leave it for too long - I put one of those scrubby scotch brite ones in there once and it scorched a bit. Chat Icon

I do it but am just happier throwing it away and putting a new one. I should also add that DH did this and set the sponge on fire and ruined our microwave Chat Icon

I do. her name is Jessica. Chat Icon dishwasher is something else that's not too popular in Brooklyn.

interesting. at least my micro will now be used for something. It's not even plugged in at the moment!

Re: Microwaving a sponge

you can microwave for 1 minute to kill the gazillions of germs that grow inside the sponge from laying wet. I just throw my sponges out every couple of days. A smelly sponge is a gross thing!

Re: Microwaving a sponge

IN case you are intereste din learning more about my sponge routine:
Microwave every evening- in a bowl of soapy water for 1 minute.
I will throw it in the DW when I remmeber.
Every Sunday it gets used to Ajax the kitchen and bathroom sink, then the tub, then it gets tossed.
I read soimewhere that it is the germiest thing in your house- next to the kitchen sink and the kitchen sink faucet knobs.
Eww.

I have a very similar routine . I don't use the bowl of soapy water, though. I just toss it in the microwave for 45 seconds every night.

Same here. Probably about twice a day now.

I make sure it's pretty wet when I put it in so it doesn't completely dry out.

Re: Microwaving a sponge

I've heard of it, but never did it.

We just throw our sponges out. We buy the cheap packages of them for $0.99. To us, they start to smell really gross and just skeeve me out.

Yep, it was on the news. BUT make sure the sponge is WET. If not, it will cause a fire.

same here... except that i use plain water... the soap (in this instance) is kind of pointless (the water and heat alone will kill most of the bacteria)
