Yup. All the time. They say the dishwasher doesnt get hot enough to kill all the germs, that the microwave is the only way to kill them all.

Be careful, they can catch on fire in the microwave.

Re: Microwaving a sponge
I do, a lot. Kills bacteria and helps them last a little longer before they stink like mildew. I nuke a WET sponge for 2 minutes.
ETA: I throw in dishwasher sometimes too, but the water is not hot enough to kill some of the bacteria, that is why microwaving is better. And 2 minutes at least to kill bacteria.

Re: Microwaving a sponge
we don't have a dishwasher, so i nuke the sponge every night.
I'd love to buy a new sponge everyday, but $30 a month in sponges seems unnecessary.

Re: Microwaving a sponge
If you're THAT worried about germs, you should get rid of your sponges. Use rags, never for more than one day at a time, and wash them in your washing machine. Keep a bucket of clean rags and a bucket for the dirty ones under the sink... When the dirty one is full, wash them in the washing machine on hot.
That's much more sanitary and far less of a fire hazard.

this is probably why I don't know about this "technique". I have used *washable and reusable* rags most of my life.

Martha Stewart's housekeeping book says:
the best way to clean your sponge is to let it airdry everyday, that way bacteria starve. All they do when you microwave it is thrive on the heat, same with dishwashing.
Let it sit out to dry every night and that way old germs have nothing to feed off of. So that is what I do now. It actually feels so much cleaner when you let it dry knowing nothing's growing in a dry sponge.

Same here. Usually 2x a night - before I start dinner (don't know what the kids and DH tried to clean before I got home from work) and after I am done in the kitchen. Plus I change the sponge once or twice a week.

Household bacteria don't thrive on the heat during microwaving. They die. It's too hot to support bacterial life.
