marathoners/half marathoners
I have a question for all you ladies who have run a marathon or a half: How important is training (well tapering) the week before the race?
I ask this because I'm running my first half on Sunday (the diva half marathon). However the beginning of this week my ankle began acting up from an old injury. I ran a total of 3 miles at the beginning of the week. Then I decided to rest my ankle for the week so its fully healed by Sunday.
Now I'm wondering if the lack of running this week will hurt me at all? I basically skipped my entire taper week. Will I still be able to run just as I normally do come Sunday? I'm worried!!
Thanks :)

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
from my own personal experience, I think you will be fine. what's the most you've run? have you done 12 miles yet? i think you are better off resting your ankle.
BAD example (don't try this at home ): i ran the NYC half 3 years ago and trained for it. a month later without any training - probably ran 3 miles 2x a week, if that - I ran another half thinking i'd be fine. I was able to run it but was in serious pain afterwards. So you'll still be able to run it and I think as long as you did your last long run 1 - 2 weeks before, you won't be hurting as much.
HTH.

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
Thanks for the response. My longest run was 14 miles (about 3 weeks ago). I've also run a few 10 and 12 milers. My last long run was 2 weeks ago (9.5 miles). So I've gotten plenty of long runs in. My biggest concern is taking almost a full week off before the half! I'm afraid my body will forget how to run or I won't be in shape.

Oh no you will be fine! I have run a few half marathons and usualyl dont do much running the week of. Maybe a few 3 mile runs or something but I have done what you did and had zero runs!
Don't worry you will do great! GOOD LUCK!

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
Thanks for the reassurance. Now I just have to worry about the fact I've been eating out every day and night this week ( we went on vacation to FL for the week). I've had dairy queen ice cream every day so far! Maybe it will give me energy lol

I think you will be fine. Resting your ankle was probably more important than any taper run.
You have already put in the training - your body needs rest!

Agree! You will be fine...you did the right thing. Your body is prepared for the impact and cardio challenge!
Have a great race!

I agree..."the hay is in the barn" as they say. In other words, the running you do this week will not help your race, training is over. I would rest. Good luck, I'm running it too!

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
THANKS EVERYONE!! I hope anyone else running the Diva Half had as great of a time as I did!
My goal was to finish in 2:15. I crossed the finish line at 2:12 (clock time), according to my garmin 2:10. I'm still waiting for my official chip time.
I ran so much better than any training run! My diet this week consisted of: IHOPx2, waffle house, denny's, pizza buffet, regular buffet, vincent's, dairy queen every day for a week straight, and chips and twizzlers. Well...somehow it worked and helped me run! Now I just have to lose the 9lbs I gained!

Congratulations and great job!! You did amazing, and you were nursing an injury. The results are up. I am thrilled with my race, did 1:53, was looking to break 2 hours. Race was great, my only complaint was that there could've been more water stops - good thing it was not hot out. And the start line was a bit chaotic. Other than that, loved it!! Congrats to those who ran today!

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
1:53!? GREAT JOB!! That's an awesome time. Congratulations on a sub-2:00 half.
I didn't like the water stops...I ran through 2 of them and people had no courtesy to move to the side for those that weren't stopping. Maybe it wouldn't have happened if there were more?
I also didn't like how the mile markers were VERY inaccurate and the entire race was longer than a half.
But other than that, it was very well organized for an inaugural race.

Thanks My garmin said I ran a total of 13.27 miles. I think because the course is measured on the tangents and most don't run on the tangents. At the first mile marker, my garmin didn't have me at a mile yet, then in the mid-to-later miles, my garmin was 1/10 mile ahead of the mile markers. Who knows, maybe they did overmeasure it :)

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
great job everyone. i finished in 2.25 im happy with that. i also ate badly last week due to nerves but i was really happy with my time. i was fine with the water stops, but i really didnt like how they handed you the tiaras and boas b4 mile 12, i had to hold my tiara and tie my boa around me. and as for the start, i think they should have had the minute groups start 30-60secs apart-like someone mentioned, it was chaotic and the walkers should have started in the back!

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
Congrats, you did GREAT!! How did you feel after and the next day?
Also, I wanted to say that has happened to me before with the mile markers being off. It could be that you ran around people and added mileage some or that you ran in a different place from where it was measure...ie the inner track vs. outer track type thing!

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
Great job girls! I was there too. It was my first 1/2 and I thought it was awesome! I made it in 2:29 and I was happy with that. I had a c/s 4 months ago. DH handed my 4 y/o DD over the fence when I came up and we "ran" the last bit of it together. She is so happy to have crossed the finish line with me. I got an extra boa and tiara for her too. She was in heaven! They even put the medal around her neck. I will def be beack next year! Oh, I could barely get up the stairs in my house yesterday and Sun though

Re: marathoners/half marathoners
Great job everyone! I thought it was a great race other than the chaos at the start. I had injured my foot so I only ran maybe 10 miles total in the past month...not smart! Today is the first day I'm starting to not feel sore! I finished in 2:30...not my best, but I was happy with it considering that I wasn't running for a few weeks. I was just glad that my foot didn't hurt during the race!
My garmin said exactly the same and was also behind at first and then ahead at the end!
Amanda, that is so cute about your daughter! I probably just missed it!
