And with the priest...my DH's only concern with us raising our kids Catholic, is that our sons can never be alter boys. My brother is an alter boy and they are never left alone with the priest.

are you kidding me?

not at all. The priest always makes sure a third party is around.

Oh they do, do they....sorry but thats a little naive

what sounds naive? in the back before the mass, the reader is always back there. They are never in the rectory without the admin assist there. Even going on field trips with the priest there is a third party. It is made very known in my parish. I am not sure what others do.

OK so prists in your parish never have confession or "counseling" sessions....there are plenty of ways for a priest to be alone with a young boy rather than a male teacher

that is agreed. but I was talking about alter boys. If an alter boy is in confession, then he is not serving at that point.

So its OK for an alter boy to be alone with a priest as long as he is not on "duty"Chat Icon

I don't make the rules, my church does. DH would rather our kids never be around a priest(he is not Catholic). Catholics have to go to confession, so there is no getting around that. I guess it is hanging around the rectory or driving around with the priest that would be the trouble.

Re: Male teachers

from 1st through 6th grade - the only teachers i had were female...when i got to 7th (came school) we got a male science teacher, we all found it a bit bizarre, but it was more his personality, not so much b/c he was a man.

i have no problem with male teachers.

Re: Male teachers

I guess maybe its weird to see a male kindergarten teacher because they are usually women - I had a few male teachers but not until jr. high. My sister had a couple for 3rd and 4th grade - seemed OK to me. My friend is a guy and is a 2nd grade teacher.

ETA: if a person is a pedifile, he or she is going to find a way to be alone with children regardless of his or her profession.

Re: Male teachers

my sister had a male 4th grade teacher. My mother did not like it, but said she would give it a try. So 4 months into school year, my sister is online and gets an im. computer was set up in dining room so my parents constantly monitor it. it was her teacher IMing her about beenie babies. my mother thought it was totally inappropriate.

Is that okay or not? A grown man after hours IMing a student who he saw all day regarding beenie babies?

Re: Male teachers

one persons actions is in no way any kind of example of what others would do

IN FACT i would think there are more incidents of HS teachers being inappropriate than elementary!

Would that be more appropriate if it was a woman? The sex of the teacher doesn't seem too relevant in this case. He wasn't sending her porn or asking for sex.

THAT man was weird.

Not all 4th grade male teachers are weird. I know, because I'm engaged to one.

Janice, please don't feel like I'm attacking you here, because I'm really not. I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from. From what I know, you're a very tolerant person. I feel like you're stereotyping in this situation. I mean, I understand how this story has an effect on your outlook, but I really think you can't just come out and say, "I don't want my kids to have a male teacher." Your kids will then feel that a male teacher is "bad", and this is exactly how prejudice and discrimination spreads.

eta: Props to your Mom for monitoring your sister's IMs. They can be dangerous, even if there AREN'T weirdo teachers IMing her.

Re: Male teachers

i am not a teacher but i work for the state...
and you have to be finger printed and checked for any previous inappropriateness when being hired

the liklihood of a pedifile being a teacher isn't high by any means

Re: Male teachers

I had an overly protective mother so I never had to deal with any BS. but I know so many people who have been touched by uncles, friends, etc...

I don't think you can be too safe with your kids.

Whats the deal here? All I asked was why he was IMing her - what did he want to discuss. And to answer your question, I would have asked the SAME if it was a female teacher. What I wanted to know was why it was so important to talk about beanie babies at night, via IM...

Re: Male teachers

wow this is turnign in to some thread LOL..

Bottom line you have to be careful leaving your kids in the care of everyone male or female, teachers or preists. But you also have to have some level of truyt or else your kids will never be involved in anyting such as baseball and church activities.

Re: Male teachers

My whole point was that.....
MEN being teachers in the elementary levels was RARE VERY RARE ....
they are still in the minority at that level
But obviously that is changing...

and to feel weird about it is normal...and will fade with more and more men being employed as such...

just like with everything else...

i have to agree with kathy. to me, sending an IM regarding beanie babies of all things, is totally inappropriate, whether it be a male or female teacher for that matter! had the teacher been sending an IM regarding an upcoming exam, or project, then that would be different!
