Re: Male teachers

I wouldn't have any problem with a male teacher at any grade level for my kids. During my school years, I think my best teachers were male.
totally agree.
My brother did his student teaching with first graders and they absolutely loved him

Re: Male teachers
I don't think I'd have a problem with my children having a male teacher at such a young age. As for teachers on Long Island, I understand its not very easy to find an elementary school position - if I was a male applying and they offered me a first grade position, it wouldn't matter to me what grade it was if I was having a tough time finding a job (that's just me though).

Re: Male teachers
I wouldnt have a problem with it at all. I'm not a teacher but I thought that in some instances, teachers didnt get to pick what grade they are teaching, the school just gives it to them.

I don't have a problem with it at all. I had a few male teachers when I was in school ( more in HS though then the younger years) but to be honest the guys were among some of my favorite teachers ever!!

It is weird, just because you don't see it very much, or at least I didn't when I was in school. I don't think we have male teachers untill 5th grade, but I do thin it is wrong to assume a mael teacher coulsd be a molester & to pull a kid out of his calls for that reason.
And I also think it is odd to assume a 6th grader would be any safer with a would be moelster, than a 1st grader.
i don't think i mentioned anyone thinking that a teacher was a molester

I don't think it's weird. I think it's important that kids start to see at an early age that careers don't have to be divided along gender lines. What about male nurses?
I know a lot of my perspective is affected by the fact that I am a teacher in city school, and since 3/4 of my kids have no male figure in their lives, it's important that they get exposure to men in the form of male teachers. I have found that on the middle school level, many kids relate to female teachers better than male teachers, because often middle school is the first time they see a male teacher.
ETA- We've also seen that female teachers can be pervs too. Mary Kay whatsherface has quite a following.
I wanted to say the exact same thing. So many kids are growing up in female only run households that I think the presence of a male role model as a teacher would do wonders!!!

Re: Male teachers
My FH is certified to teach 1-6 and special ed. Throughout his 5 years of "in the classroom" training, he had every grade from 1-6. He really loved working with the younger kids, because they are so curious and everything is so new to them, but found that he was most useful/appreciated in the early adolescent stages, specifically grades 4-6.
He teaches in a high needs district, and not to sound discriminatory or prejudiced, but many of his students are minorities with a single parent, 99% of the time, just a mother or grandmother. Kids NEED male role models in the early stages of life. It's a fact. He even volunteers his time to coach PAL baseball and softball in that area, and he was bombarded by grateful parents who thought it was so great that he was a male teacher, doing his best to help out the kids who need it.
I have a TREMENDOUS appreciation for what he does, and I really feel it takes an incredibly giving, caring, PATIENT person to do that everyday. I know plenty of males that are giving, caring, and patient, what's so weird about them teaching?

No, you didn't but Janice did. Sorry, I should have quoted her post.

I think a male teacher is a lot more likely to try something sexual on a child then a female teacher.

not counting high school, where 90% of my teachers were male, my first, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades teachers were all male as well. I'm 22, so it's been a while.

Re: Male teachers
I think one of the reasons that you don't see many male elementary school teachers is that they make less $ than HS teachers and there are fewer opportunities to boost your salary with things like coaching, which one might have at the HS level.
I know there are lots of single women who teach, but as a former educator, I would say most of the female teachers I worked with were married and their income was the second one, not the main one for the family.

I didn't have a male teacher until j.h.s. I didn't think *it* was weird. But I did think that many of *them* were. I think it's weird with younger kids. Probably because of some societal thing.

Re: Male teachers
I don't think it's weird to have a male teacher for 1st grade. My little brother is majoring in education with a focus on elementary education. He has an amazing repore with children. He's energetic, patient, creative and intelligent - all wonderful characteristics for a teacher.
To those who would refuse a male teacher for young children on the sole reason of gender, what example are you setting for your children? That is just blatant discrimination. If you are concerned with molesters than you need to look at everyone who has contact with your child - male or female.

And with the priest...my DH's only concern with us raising our kids Catholic, is that our sons can never be alter boys. My brother is an alter boy and they are never left alone with the priest.

My DH was going to switch careers from accounting to el. ed. I think he would have been wonderful with young children. He is as straight as an arrow but loves sports and is so patient and caring. He would have been a wonderful role model. I loved my first grade teacher, but my second grade teacher was an idiot. I remember she would have us copy notes and our parents would correct her spelling errors so we wouldn't be learning the wrong spelling! But she would still mark the RIGHT spelling as INCORRECT on tests!

I would be on the lookout, but every now and then a major article comes out about a woman and a middle school aged boy. My kids will attend school, so I would pick the woman over the man.

ok...so it's a sad commentary in that the priest feels he needs to "cover his azz" so as to not be potentially accused of anything. but to say that your dh's only concern about raising your kids Catholic, is that your sons can never be alter boys, is simply pathetic IMO. will he never let your sons play baseball, or little league for that matter??...or is it IMPOSSIBLE to think that a little league coach is incapable of being a molester as well?? molesters come in all shapes and sizes!

they do, I agree. the priest thing is really sad. But it is my husband's request, if my kids really wanted badly to be alter servers maybe I would try and work something out. My kids will play sports, but we will be around.
I was reading an article where there is an explosion of high school coaches having sex with female athletes. They are trusted by girls and family, and coaches know exactly what to say to them.

Yeah, but in this day and age, if you're a priest, or a teacher, or anyone who works with kids, you'd be smart to take measures. It's sad, but true. If I find that I have to speak to a kid one on one after class, I won't do it alone in the room with the door closed- I'll go in the hallway or in the office, where we can be seen. I always make sure my classroom door is open if it's just me and a kid in the room, and then I stand in the doorway. There is a sad mix of nutty people and opportunists out there and you have to be careful.
