Re: Male teachers
I agree. I don't think I would be comfortable with it. In kindergarden, I was assigned a male teacher, my mother asked that I be placed in a different class, they said no. I lasted in kindergarden for a month, then stopped going and waited till 1st grade to resume.

Re: Male teachers
I think male elementary teachers are few and far between but I don't necessarily find it weird.

Re: Male teachers
Thats so weird. I was talking to my goddaughter about this last night, she is going to be 6 and start 1st grade. She also has a male teacher. I don't have a problem with it - I said to DH that is weird, I have never come across a male teacher that teaches that young.

Re: Male teachers
I don't see the difference between a male 1st grade teacher or a female first grade teacher. Your co-worker shouldn't be so closed-minded. Obviously he is qualified to do the job, or else he wouldn't have it.

Re: Male teachers
There were a few male teachers at my elementry school. I really never thought about it, except we always thought the one 5th grade teacher was a perv bc of rumors we heard about him.

Re: Male teachers
I still think it's close minded. And that's great that her kid is still in the class, because, like I said, he's doing the job because he's qualified. And in fact, many schools look for male teachers for the lower grades. I just don't find it odd, that's all.

Re: Male teachers
my husband and i had a really long discussion about this one night. he thinks a male teacher (preschool to about 3rd grade) is the weirdest thing on the planet. he can't understand why any man would want to teach kids that young. i thought his opinion was totally bizarre. i mean men are fathers right? so they must like kids a little bit... it's just some strange societal prejudice.
also my bil is the director of a daycare center/pre-school that he and my sister own together. i don't think it's the least bit weird. i think it's wonderful that he likes kids so much that he'd work with them every day.

it isn't close minded...
close minded would be that she pulled her child out of the class and complained about it....
People can feel weird to new things....doesn't mean that they won't adjust to it

Well, APPARENTLY, great minds don't ALWAYS think alike. I guess we just see it differently. I'm sure your friend will adjust after a while.

I think my mother had seperation anxiety with me leaving home already, then sending me into a strange man's care for 7 hours a day seemed like a stretch. I would feel weird about sending my child to school with a male teacher at a young age. I think past 6th grade is okay.
This is going to sound extremely closed minded, but I really don't care. At a young age, a child is going to look at the teacher as a safe person. I think a male teacher is a lot more likely to try something sexual on a child then a female teacher. And what are the odds that 5/6 year old is going to come home and tell? slim to none. I feel as though it is very unnecessary to add the extra stress on parents. And please don't flame me about being judgemental...I wish more parents would judge. A lot of kids are being molested, and not by strangers hiding in bushes. It is happening by trusted individuals, family, friends...
so I think if a man wants to teach 1st grade, I think he is allowed, he just won't be teaching my child.

Re: Male teachers
I don't think it's weird. I think it's important that kids start to see at an early age that careers don't have to be divided along gender lines. What about male nurses?
I know a lot of my perspective is affected by the fact that I am a teacher in city school, and since 3/4 of my kids have no male figure in their lives, it's important that they get exposure to men in the form of male teachers. I have found that on the middle school level, many kids relate to female teachers better than male teachers, because often middle school is the first time they see a male teacher.
ETA- We've also seen that female teachers can be pervs too. Mary Kay whatsherface has quite a following.

Re: Male teachers
It is weird, just because you don't see it very much, or at least I didn't when I was in school. I don't think we have male teachers untill 5th grade, but I do thin it is wrong to assume a mael teacher coulsd be a molester & to pull a kid out of his calls for that reason.
And I also think it is odd to assume a 6th grader would be any safer with a would be moelster, than a 1st grader.

Re: Male teachers
I wouldn't have any problem with a male teacher at any grade level for my kids. During my school years, I think my best teachers were male.

It is NEVER too early to speak to your child about good and bad touching. If you are open and discuss things with your child, they absolutely WILL tell you if something has happened to them. That being said, would you trust a male doctor to touch your child? I'm not trying to give you a hard time, because you are obviously entitled to your opinion, but to assume that a male teacher is likely to molest your child is ridiculous.

I was just going to say that! All you hear about is female teachers that molest their students. It is very rare to hear about male teachers doing this. Also, what about the priests that rape/molest the little boys. Will you only send your child to a female priest now? Maybe I am blowing this a little out of proportion right now but it absolutely amazes me that we live in this type of society that will not send their child to a certain teacher because of his sex!

Re: Male teachers
okay, I would be comfortable with a male doctor/dentist as long as I was able to be in the room with them.
Yes female teachers can be sickos too.
And sorry, as much as you talk to your kid about bad touching, that does not mean they are going to tell you what went on.
And with the priest...my DH's only concern with us raising our kids Catholic, is that our sons can never be alter boys. My brother is an alter boy and they are never left alone with the priest.
