The fact that they didn't notice when they got back in the car baffles me. Evident that there was no car seat.

I'm just curious because in my mind, this is more than a daycare violation. Would they be brought up on criminal charges like neglect or child endangerment? Is child neglect more of an ongoing neglect and not a one time thing?

Re: LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/police-probe-day-care-center-after-toddler-s-left-at-beach-1.3906145

A Bay Shore day care center, under scrutiny after police said employees abandoned a 2-year-old girl on a South Shore beach, had been cited by the state for improperly supervising children.

During a routine inspection Jan. 26, the Office of Children and Family Services found that Our Little Darlings Early Educational Center violated a state regulation requiring "direct visual contact with the children at all times," records show.

The agency launched an investigation of the center after police reported that the girl -- on a day care outing with other children -- had been left behind Tuesday at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, said Pat Cantiello, an agency spokeswoman.

Despite the January citation, records show the center is currently licensed and in good standing.

Our Little Darlings has been operating for about five years without fines, suspensions or other serious enforcement actions, records show. The center is permitted to care for 16 children, 12 of whom can be as young as 6 weeks.

Suffolk County Child Protective Services and State Park Police are also looking into Tuesday's incident.

"This is a very active investigation," said Capt. Bruce Marx, commander of the state park police for the Long Island region. "We're going to look at criminal charges, that's for sure. . . . I don't know how you leave a child alone at the beach."

Exactly! If a parent had left their child behind at the beach I am QUITE sure some kind of charges would be brought.
CPS would definitely be involved at the very least.

Heads definitely need to roll here.

On Google Maps, it looks like it's about 8 miles from the day care to the Hecksher Park beach...

I literally could've cried for this mother after hearing this. Im surprised that nobody on here has a child who goes to this daycare or knows someone who does. It's such a small world, Kwim? I'd like to hear what they would say about this place.

How HORRIBLE. That poor child, and her poor mother! I would be beside myself if that was DS. Thank God they got their license was revoked. No other children should be subjected to that place.

Did you guys see the front page of Newsday today?
I have to try and link it but the story is even WORSE.
Apparently they went on a field trip to the park at Hecksher- not the beach- and the girl wandered away from them at the park ,and ended up at the beach part.

WANDERED AWAY!
I have been at Hecksher- there are roads everywhere- cars everwhere.
The fact that she wandered away and was walking unsupervised in that park is beyond anything I could even imagine!

Unfreaken believable. The fact that no one noticed a two year walking that far alone makes me nuts. Someone had to have seen this child and no one said anything.

Honestly everyone adult there from the daycare deserves jail time.

Re: LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

What I don't get is why NO ONE thought "HMMM i haven't seen _______ in a while. where is she?!!!?" I mean, if you're with these kids approx. 40 hours a week, don't you think you'd notice if one wasn't around? And the fact that this baby was able to get so far away for such a long time?? I just don't get it.

It is an absolute MIRACLE that this had a happy ending (reunion with mom and baby)..I could cry watching the mom talk about seeing her again for the first time. I'm glad the center was shut down. I can only hope that each and every one of them will be prohibited from working with children ever again.

It is Field 6. There are 2 sets of playgrounds and then a long cement path to the bathrooms and to the bay.
What I can't understand is how is it legal for a 2 year old to be bused on a field trip.

Insane!!!!

I went to Dorney Park this week. I couldn't help think of this story when I saw two pre-school day camp workers take in 5 kids EACH into the wave pool. And I'm not talking about into the wave pool up to their ankles - those kids were in there up to their chests before they turned on the waves. The 2 workers at points even had their backs turned on the kids. I couldn't believe it.

First of all I would love to hug the mom who reported the little girl being alone. She really could have saved her life.

Second, how is it that this girl wandered away so far and nobody else noticed a 2 year old walking ALONE?

Why are these daycares taking too many children, obviously, to a park/beach?

How is it that it wasnt noticed that she was gone during the trip, while getting into the bus, getting off of the bus etc. It is so alarming that nobody knew or said anything.

So glad this is being taken seriously. That POOR mother. Even knowing my child was safely found I think I would have a heart attack just thinking what could have happened.

I haven't read this whole thread but does it say anywhere how many adults and how many kids were on this trip? I can't imagine how if you're only responsible for 5 kids you don't notice one of them is gone (I believe that is the ratio at that age).
Also as others have posted, I think taking 2-year-olds on a field trip is weird but going to a location near water is just insane!

Re: LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

Random thought and I've been debating whether or not to post this on here because I don't want to offend anyone:

Did anyone get the sense that this school was for ppl with lower income and maybe this is why this happened?

I mean, it said the mother was single, and can't you qualify for childcare assistance if you are in that bracket?

It's something that has crossed my mind since I saw the video with the mother, and made me think that maybe this place wasn't as regulated for that reason.

I don't know. Fortunately, I've never had to rely on daycare for my own child.

ETA: I feel bad because if this is the case this is just more stress she (and other ppl in the same predicament) have to deal with in an already stressful life situation.

Not the same thing, but having worked in home care for many years, and seeing what happens with some aides towards vulnerable adults, nothing surpirses me when it comes to "caregiving".

That's absolutely nuts.

I also think some of these places don't necessarily hire people who are actually qualified to be taking care of small children.

And it makes sense that you sometimes get what you pay for.

Working in home care for many years, and knowing how little the aides make, I think that's part of the problem.

There are definitely great staff out there who are qualified and care but when these bad stories surface, it really makes you question every provider.

I don't work with kids, but have heard that a lot of daycares do not pay well either.

Read in Newsday today that criminal charges are most likely going to be filed.

Lower income, higher income, in home or in a center, if a daycare is licensed they are subject to the same regulations all around.

When I had DD in daycare (10+ years ago at this point) I received assistance. The only people at the daycare who knew was the owner and bookeeper (as far as i know) I never saw any difference in treatment between her and any other kid. She wasnt in a popular center (it was a private owned place) sort of a cross between an in home and a center. The did a few bus trips but not until they were preschool age or in their kindergarten program. The younger kids did waking trips only.

(Now not needing assistance anymore) last year when I was looking at daycares to possibly put DS in I looked at in home daycares (like the place in question) as well as centers like tudor time and kiddie academy. The differences I did notice (besides the obvious mixed age groups and space overall) was that some in homes werent as strict when it came to taking the kids out. My opinion was that when dealing with the mixed ages they catered to the older ones so they wouldn't be bored. Maybe that was the issue here?

Single or married, one kid or five, it doesn't matter. If your income meets certain guidelines you can qualify for a reduced or even free daycare rate. I believe that all licensed daycares, whether in home or center based, must accept DSS subsidies.

Thanks for chiming in!

I don't know what the "criteria" is and if they were all the same and had to accept a subsidy.
