IDK how they could not have realized that they left one child behind. It's called a head count and should have been done at the car. Not 3 hours later when they realized the child wasn't there!

LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

I am an anxious mess when it's just me and DD at the beach..I can't believe they took a group of 2 year olds to the beach!!! That poor little girl and her poor mother. I cannot imagine being in her shoes. Fire them all and suspend their license!

I cannot even imagine! What daycare takes 2 year olds on field trips? I worked in day care for years and only pre-schoolers went on trips. We did headcounts a gazillion times while on the trip(s).

If I were the mother of this child, I would've lost it. I seriously would've went nuts on the teachers and the daycare.
This is a huge violation and I'm sorry, but, they should be shut down. Unreal!

Isn't 2 years old a bit young for field trips?
How do they get there- on a bus?
Are there car seats on that bus?
I am sorry but that can't be safe.
My DD is 2 and there is NO WAY I would allow daycare to take her anywhere off site at this age.
NO way.

And as far as this goes, everyone on that trip- EVERYONE needs to be fired.
No excuses.
And that center needs to have it's liscense suspended.
It took them until 6:30 to make a call to the park police?? Really???
Holy shyt this is making me crazy!!!

And especially a beach????? I'm a teacher and I HATE field trips bc I'm always afraid of something happening! I literally count how many students 50 times! How,did they not know she was missing? I agree they are all at fault!

When I student taught we brought 80 students (elementary age to some middle school) with disabilities to tobay beach. They had an aide for about every 5 kids (some had an aide per student) but the aides were college kids. These aides were in the water with them. I wanted no part of that, the ocean is way to scary and I wasn't being responsible if something happened.

It is too risky. I can't believe they take 2 year olds to the beach! Honestly I wouldn't be comfortable with any field trip for my 2 yr old!

LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

I know the area where that daycare is located and it has to be a daycare run out of a private home. That owner should be SHUT DOWN immediately because seriously, they can't have more than 10-12 kids there and it took them 3 hrs to realize a 2 year old was missing?!?!

Unreal!

Re: LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

Wow. THere is so much wrong with this story I don't even know where to begin, but I will begin with the fact that most reputable and well run daycare centers won't take kids on outside field trips until they are at least 4, when they can somewhat follow directions and understand safety rules. And then they go somewhere structured with an adult in charge of a tiny group that he or she can keep track of.

A large beach with 2 year olds is unheard of. Parents should sign a consent. I am sure they did, because they would have to send in a bathing suit I am assuming. But I am sure the parent was told the would be adequate supervision. There should be a 3:1 ratio in daycare. Outside should be 2:1, but even if an adult is watching 3 kids, that is her job to make sure those 3 are always being watched.

They did not lose track of the kid at 3:30. They lost track of her waaaayyy before that. The kid seemed to have gone to play with another family, which is why she probably was forgotten. It was the universe watching over her that she found a family, and not a child molester or murderer. Or she didnt wander into the ocean. The fact that while they were there, she already was neglected upsets me the most. That family saved her life, because they didn't want to just leave her without finding her mom (another family may have not even thought to do that).

Then, in the bus there is no head count?

Going into the daycare to change her no one notices? When they hang up the bathing suits?

Snack time, no one notices? Playtime???

Imagine being the mom at pick up? I would have gone apeshitt. And if I wasn't religious yet, I would have been after that.

Thank god this is not a story with a tragic ending! Chat Icon

This is seriously my worst nightmare.
When I get to daycare to pick up my DD and she isn't in her normal room (sometimes after 5 pm they combine rooms as children are picked up and teachers go off shift) I always get a tiny bit of anxiety until I figure out which room she is in. If I walk in the room and don't see her right away because she is off in the corner playing or whatever, I get nervous.
I cannot even imgaine what I would do if they couldn't find her.
I really think I would end up in a mental institution after an experience like that.

Especially if it was "uh oh.... We think we left her at the BEACH!"

Honestly, I think I would turn into the most primitive of wild animals, that the poor kid would be reunited with me in a jail cell.

I worked in daycare for several years. I cannot imagine what it would be like to take children this young on a field trip, let alone a field trip to the beach! Extremely irresponsible and dangerous. They should be shut down and any parent who has a child in that facility should remove them immediately.

I dont get this at all! When I take my THREE kids to the beach I go 1,2,3... 1, 2,3... constantly. I took them last week and thought how difficult it was to keep an eye on all 3 without help.

I also do not get why it took them so long to report this child missing. If I was her mother I think Id need to be restrained and drugged for a couple days. I really think Id go crazy with the thought of losing them.

Helllll no! I would flip out. Thank God the baby was OK. I hope they shut down that daycare. That is unacceptable.

Side note but last year in Pre-K they didn't allow trips until all the kids turned 4. I went on a few and even with numerous parents on the trip DDs PK teacher was constantly counting heads. What that day care did is absolutely unacceptable.

Holy crap! My kid was missing at camp & without those headcounts, she wouldn't have been here today.

Shut them down! And kudos to the mom of the other kid for making sure to track down the authorities & not let the kid wander back to their imaginary guardians.

Re: LI Day Care abandons 2 year old at beach

I am probably reiterating what everyone here is saying, but I teach kindergarten and I won't take those kids out of the building without the ratio being 2:1 I have 8 students (sped) and all of them have an adult hand to hold. Even then, I am CONSTANTLY counting them. I would not even dream of going on a beach trip with two year olds.

Also-all of my students have lanyards with the name and contact information of the school on it. Especially the non-verbal or really young kids who are just starting to talk/don't know their phone/address. I am a nut and double up and put stickers with my cell and the school's number on their coats, sweaters, etc. because if they lose their lanyard, I want the contact info visible.

This school was careless in so many ways!

I think the ratio for 2 year olds is 7:1. Daycares take trips all the time and usually ask for parent volunteers so there are more eyes on them. I wouldn't have a problem with them going to the beach to play (no water) but they should have counted at least 3-4 times before leaving. Once after rounding up the kids, at least once while walking, once after walking to the bus and once again right before leaving after all of the kids were buckled in. There's really no excuse.

It's 5:1 until they are 3.

Yup.

Does anyone know if this is a center or a family day care?

This daycare seems to have had a history of violations and most recently one of inadequate teacher:student ratio.

I can't believe that they only noticed when the mom came to pick up her child! Chat Icon They are lucky a family who cares enough was with the child and did not leave the child alone.

I just can't get over this. It's such gross neglect, you wouldn't blame a parent if they got violent.

It took the daycare 3 hours to report the child missing and didn't they even bother doing headcounts. Never mind the fact that they took 2 year olds to the beach, which I find dangerous and an inappropriate place to go on a field trip with little kids. My almost 2 year old is in daycare now and they DO NOT go on field trips because they are too young and can be quite unmanageable.

I would be livid and I would want everyone involved terminated immediately and the daycare license suspended and the daycare investigated.

I agree. THis is soooo scary.
