Late walkers

Dd is 15 months and doesn't walk on her own. She pulls herself up to standing and cruises along furniture and will walk holding both hands. She doesn't stand on her own either.

I know it's not delayed until 18 months but it still makes me anxious bc most babies her age and her friends are walking at her age or younger.

She really just has no desire. She is so much faster crawling and I think it's a confidence, cautious, balance thing. We have a pedi appt this week so I will discuss it with him but wanted to hear others experiences from here.

Re: Late walkers

As you said, 15 months isn't considered late for walking. It sounds as if she's getting close. Give it a few more weeks.

Do you have any of those push toys that may help give her confidence to let go of the couch?

Re: Late walkers

DS1 walked a week before he turned 15 months and once he did it he never went back to crawling.

She'll be fine.

DS2 walked at 17.5 months and now he doesn't stop! No issues for either boys. They were just both late walkers and more cautious.

Re: Late walkers

To make you feel better DS#1 was walking at 16 months and once he took off he was ready.
DS#2 was 17 months and no issue either.

DS #3 is just one an no sign of walking yet.

Since you lo is pulling up I wouldn't worry. Every kid goes at their own pace

Late walkers

Charlie did not start walking until he was 14 months. He actually skipped walking and went right to walking. A friend of mine showed me a trick that I also think helped because he also was afraid to let go. We would roll up paper and I would hold onto one side and he would hold onto the other. Once we were walking for a while I would drop the paper and he would continue. When they are holding your hand it is impossible to stop it without them knowing that you are trying to let go!

Late walkers

Several babies at daycare just started walking at 17 months. If mommy instinct is telling you something is off get it checked but if not give it another month and are what happens.

Re: Late walkers

that isn't really late and sounds like it will happen very soon so I wouldn't worry too much but you can always call for an early intervention meeting and get an evaluation just for your own piece of mind.

I wouldn't worry... once she gets the confidence to let go she will probably be taking off! I think if at 18 months she's still not walking, then you can call EI for an evaluation.

As long as she's meeting other milestones I wouldn't worry a bit. Some kids are just more cautious or aren't as motivated bc they have other ways to get around. DD walked at 16 months after 2 months of PT. Like you said, walking isn't delayed yet but DD wasn't meeting other milestones like crawling, pulling up, etc., so I had her evaluated with EI at 13 months.

Dd walked at almost 16m. She picked herself up one day and walked across the room, and she did it well!. I guess she was just waiting until she knew she could do it!

Re: Late walkers

DD wasn't walking at 17 mos and we started the ball rolling so she would be evaluated by 18 mos. She ultimately qualified and got PT. She didn't walk til over 20 months old. She would not have qualified though unless she was already 18 mos at time of testing.

Re: Late walkers

I just went through the same thing with DD. She started walking 6 days before she turned 15 months. I thought she was close for months, but she just wasn't ready yet. Once she started walking, she never fell and was extremely confident. She just took her time. I wouldn't worry. My cousins 2nd DD was about 17.5 months when she started walking. Just keep giving her ample space to practice. Hold her hands and walk with her or give her a toy to push.

Re: Late walkers

Both of my boys walked at 16 months. DS1 walked FT within 10 days of taking his first steps. DS2 walked FT about a month after taking his first steps and has been running around ever since. I wouldn't worry yet. Chat Icon

My DS was not crawling ...so we had him evaluated at 9 months. By the time he qualified (at 11 months) he was already crawling short distances, pulling to stand, etc. Now at 12 months he is JUST learning to do a little cruising from one toy to the next, but is by no means hoping from furniture to furniture in a semi walk cruise. I wont be surprised if he doesnt walk until 15-16 months. Doctor told me it isnt an issue until 18 months.
