I was in the airport and saw a chubby little baby maybe 6 mos with pink painted toenails and it was the cutest thing ever!
Cute maybe but don't you think this is dangerous at that age? My 4.5 month old ALWAYS has her feet in her mouth - I'd be worried about her eating the nail polish off at this age!
i agree, its dangerous & toxic...not too smart to be used on a baby IMO.
as far as older babies...thats a personal preference i suppose...I don't think it's trashy per se...but i don't think it's necessary on a baby. maybe i'd do it around 7ish...and only SOMETIMES as a special treat. I'm pretty old school so to me thats another thing that symbolizes a girls coming of age.
here's how i see it & again it's obviously just my opinion. these are customs that were created to enhance a womans beauty & attract attention & i don't see why a baby should concern themselves with enhancing their beauty or attract more attention. Children are made to grow up too fast, I enjoy the period when they're pure and unaltered
I agree with much of this.
My biggest issue is the toxicity of it. I think it's insane and not cute to paint a 6 mth old's nails.
I have been considering doing it...but ONLY with a child safe brand I saw in BBB called Piggy paint. That would be the ONLY way I do it, if I do it at all any time soon. But I still wouldn't use Piggy paint on an infant. No way.
Here is a link for the Piggy paint if anyone is intersted.

Yeah think abuot it,. they can't even wear sunscreen before 6 months and that is something that is beneficial, not cosmetic. That's a bit extreme at 6 months!

no issues with it except as mentioned your using chemicals on your kid. DH complains when I paint my nails and I have to do it outside.

when DD stopped putting her feet in her mouth i painted her toes.
she just started getting her finger nails painted in the last year or so. (shes 3.5 now)
she loves it, we do out nails together. its some special time together for us.
Same. I love it and DD loves it...it's our bonding time. She's already had a few pedis and manis. I love taking her with me to the nail salon. She has her ears pierced too. I don't either one is trashy. Honestly I think it's cute...nothing trashy about it. It's not like she's rocking a g-string and stilettos...so I don't see whats so trashy about it.

This is what I use when I do DDs nails at home. When we go to the nail salon I use OPI.

Absolute No-No in my book. Not only would I not want chemicals on my little girl's nails but I would also like her to remain a child for as long as she can. There will be plenty of time for all the beauty treatments when she grows up!
She is 4 and loooooves going to the salon with me where she actively participates in choosing my nail polish out of the few I pick out but she KNOWS that little girls don't pain their nails, only grown women do. She is fine with it and is patiently waiting for the time when she "grows boobies" which is the time she knows she will be allowed to paint her nails pink!
My almost 4 year old has no idea what "boobies" are. I think that is more indicative of keeping her young and pure as opposed to not using nail polish.
My daughter, who is very observant and social, is looking forward to having "boobies" so she can "feed her babies" when she grows up. I can't think of a more pure reason to want them nor for a better association for a girl to have with her developing body in the future.
My DD knows what breasts are and knows about breastfeeding. It's the term "boobies" I have an issue with-it's something that to me, is disrespectful.
I also don't like to tell her that she can do this this and this when she gets older. If she thinks nail polish and earrings are for when she "gets boobies", kind of as a coming of age thing (particularly when associated with "getting boobies", what else will she think she is capable of as soon as she "gets them"? I just think it's a slippery slope.
My daughter wears pink or purple nail polish because she loves pink and purple. She certainly doesn't look older or more mature-she looks like a 4 year old. She doesn't have earrings, because I got them when I was 7 and I had a special day out with my grandmother and I want the same for her. DD is perfect and wholesome and there are a lot of things that I think kids do too fast, this just isn't among them.

I paint my daughter's nails w piggy paint. She loves it. It's cute and pale pink. I wouldn't bring her to a nail salon bc she can't sit still and women are paying a lot of $ for a little "me" time. My daughter is quite girly. She's into shoes & clothes and dressing up now.

Perhaps it's because English is not my first language but I don't see anything disrespectful about the word "boobies". It has always been used in our household in regards to breastfeeding. "Boobie milk", "boobie time", "baby wants a boobie because he is hungry". Not sure what exactly anyone would find disrespectful about that term, but as I mentioned, I might be missing out on some intricacies of the American English...
My daughter associates having 'boobies" with being an adult because all the mothers that she sees have or are BFing their children and of course, mothers are adults. That's really how it started. I don't see it as a slippery slope. I see it as a child who understands that certain things are reserved for adults only... I am pretty sure, or rather, I can only hope, she will not run out to join the circus at the first sign of her budding mammary glands...

We didn't start until DD was 3.5 years. We use Piggy Paint too.
I will say that I was recently at a party and 4 month old twins were both wearing polish on their toes...I will admit that I was definitely taken aback. Same color, so it wasn't to tell them apart (not to mention one has a full head of hair and one is almost bald, so no confusing them).

Re: Kind of a Spinoff to Pierced Ears... Painted Nails
Maybe I'm overly neurotic, but I don't think I'll take DD to a nail salon anytime soon. I don't consider them to be very clean places. I know several adults who have gotten nail fungus at these salons. Also, I don't really trust them to properly sterilize the tools. I would feel beyond awful if DD picked anything up from a nail salon. I always cringe when I see little girls there. Maybe I'll get over this feeling eventually but I'm not sure.
That said, I'd be happy to do them at home for her myself with nontoxic polish once she's 4 or so.

I don't think this is an ESL thing. I think it's a different household thing. Everyone has different terms for "private" parts in their family. I don't see boobies as inappropriate or vulgar in the slightest, and I'm a native English speaker.

Re: Kind of a Spinoff to Pierced Ears... Painted Nails
I only have a 13 mo old so haven't done the nail thing yet... Not sure I have an opinion on it as much as I do the earrings... I have seen little 3 and 4 yr olds with their nails done and I think it looks cute. I don't think it's really necessary for my DD when she's say 2 to get it done...I think I will wait til she's 3 or 4 but who knows....my opinion is not that strong on the matter to know now what I'll do when she's older.
The one thing I will do whenever I start to take DD for nails...I'll take her at an off time when the nail place is not so busy. I HATE when I have to wait b/c there are so many little girls ahead of me getting their nails done and I'm sitting there waiting. It's just an annoying thing to me so I'll try to only take DD when I know it will be slow and she won't be holding others up.

Re: Kind of a Spinoff to Pierced Ears... Painted Nails
My DD is 4 and I just started letting her have her toe nails painted in the summer. No fingernails. Just don't like the look.
My personal preference is no ear peircing or nails painted on babies. I'll probably let DDs get their ears pierced in 2nd grade or so.

Re: Kind of a Spinoff to Pierced Ears... Painted Nails
No issues with little girls getting their nail or toes done. DD started getting her toes done around 3 and her nails around 4. I take her to the salon with me and they only polish. I won;t let them touch her with the tools or even file them.
I think it looks adorable and she loves it!! We go maybe once a month or so. In the winter, we dont usually go at all. Maybe every 2-3 months.
But my issue is that she loves getting it done at the salon because they paint flowers, that she wont let me do it at home!!
I am so not a fan of polish on babies. I think it's wierd looking. I only think it's okay when kids can say that they want it themselves.

I pierced Sienna's ears and polished her toes.
I am trying to make her look as trashy as possible
How the eff does one ever call a baby trashy???
And FTR, I think Carlie is precious and how much fun is it to paint their toes? Sienna gives me her toes to paint now

We affectionately call it boobie milk here too! And I do commend you for teaching your DD about BFing as I plan on teaching mine the same. However, I don't agree that painting toes pink makes her grow up, but hey, to each their own! Just wanted to mention the boobie milk because that is our little thing too!
