Kids with cellphones

what age do you think is appropiate for kids to have cellphone?, either if it's for emergency's or school ex: like if the kid missed the bus he/she can use the phone or if they need to be picked up earlier. My nephew is 10 year's old and he just got one.Chat Icon Chat Icon

At 10, I can see getting those cell phones with preprogrammed numbers for say the parents, caregivers & 911 for emergencies. A full fledged cell phone with texting abilities would come when the kid is working & can pay their own bill.

I teach middle school and I think that is too young, IMO. The circumstances you describe we all went through, and we survived without cellphones. We just went to the main office and made a phone call - no biggie!

I think a cellphone is appropriate once the child can pay for it (or part of it).

Re: Kids with cellphones

I have a 11 and 12 year old that is begging for one and the answer is NO!
I am a sahm and there is noone for them to call but me.
If I was working and they could get left behind with a carpool--maybe...but then only a phone with some minutes---not some elaborate phone with texting and all that crap---too young.

My 11 year old brother got one when he turned 9. The phone can only call my stepmom at work or at home. He talks to my stepmom as he is walking home from school so I think thats good in his case. He doesnt abuse it and talk with friends (that he does on the home phone!)

I'm old fashioned...I say 16 or 18!!!!

I wasn't allowed to have a beeper until I was 18. I remember begging because EVERYONE had a beeper, and my mom said they were only "for hookers and drug dealers" and I wasn't any of those, so...Chat Icon

Re: Kids with cellphones

I say at least 15, anything younger is just crazy. Why do you need a cell phone at 9? The only place you go is somewhere with your parents, family members, a friends house, or school.

I agree. What did we do back in the days of no cells, no pages, no texting, etc? And we all lived!

Payphones are getting harder and harder to find. Phone companies just aren't putting them out or maintaining them anymore. Everyone has cell phones, so they can't justify the cost.

I like the ones that are preprogrammed. Some even have a GPS tracker that you can go on-line and find out where they are. We still have a few years before I have to think about this, but we'll probably get DC a limited phone in middle school, and when they can pay the bills, and show that it isn't affecting their school work, I'll probably let them get one in HS. We'll see.....

Re: Kids with cellphones

I have an 11 year old stepdaughter...and she has a cell phone with restrictions (she can only call the numbers I programmed in, she can't receive voicemails, no texts, etc).

All her friends have "regular" cell phones and she tells me she gets made fun of all the time. My answer is, I don't care what everyone else is doing...when she can pay the bill for the phone, she can use all the features that came with it. They can't use cell phones in school, so when she wants to stay late at school, she calls home from the main office anyway Chat Icon

Since the world is changing and all the other kids will have one by time dd turns 10...then dd can use the other kids cell phones to call me...LOL Otherwise...nope..no cell phone. School is school...if she needed to call me at 10 years old while at school then she could find the nurse, principle or guidance counselor.

ITA. I cannot imagine what a middle school aged child needs a phone for. If you're staying after school or missed the bus, go to the main office and make a call. We all did it.

I think a cellphone only serves as a distraction at that age.
