I think he meant that it sucks that they couldn't do that problem.... Chat Icon I'm glad to hear that he loves math. We need more kids like that. Math is awesome, especially since math pretty much runs the world, and everything we do in it.

I'd like to find out why the teacher had them cross out a problem in a math book? Why not just skip it? I'm not a fan of writing in text books for most reasons....

Is this cause for alarm?

I would find it disrespectful and would address it with my child. IMO children should not be saying sucks, it doesn't sound right. I think the world has become much too lenient with our youth and that is why they are so disrespectful.

Do I think it's the end of the world and warrants punishment? NO, but I do not think it was appropriate and I would have let the parent know if I was the teacher.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?

I'm not sure if a written apology is necessary unless it's an actual textbook, not a workbook/worksheet.

Assuming he just wrote it on his own worksheet, I would talk to him as others discussed and make sure he understands that was inappropriate and not to do it again.

As a teacher, I have learned that some students need every possible visual reminder of the instructions. Putting an X through something ensures that they'll know to skip even if they are goofing off/not listening well etc. and then resume working later when they would have forgotten to skip.

If you're kid is a good kid but had a bad moment I wouldn't make a stink out of it. Probably does more harm than good. Just talk to him and tell him it wasn't appropriate and not to do it again. It was his way of "expressing" himself. We are all entitled to vent, ask him olto do it more appriately next time if he's going to do it aloud. I would not punish him over it if hes a good kid most of the time, just talk to him about it.

The Go Math book is a workbook with tear out pages that each child gets. At least that is how it works in our district. It's not a text book for reference. So he didn't write in HER book.

I don't think it is a big deal, but it bothered the teacher. I think it is a good thing for teachers to draw a line between being silly and being disrespectful. I wouldn't think to have your son write an apology letter, but since it was suggested I think it is a good idea. It is good for him to know he stepped out of line and also good to show the teacher you are supporting her. No cause for alarm though.

ITA. I wouldn't condone that type of behavior, but I wouldn't act like it's a MAJOR problem.

I agree. I would definitely address it & my child would know it is not acceptable at all to write something like that in his book. But there wouldn't be a big punishment. I think apologizing to the teacher is sufficient.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?

I think the teacher handled the situation well. She just wanted to let you know what your son did and that it was inappropriate, nothing more.

I don't think a written apology is necessary as he wasn't directing his behavior towards the teacher, but I think a verbal apology would be appreciated.

As for the crossing out- I teach 3rd grade and that Go Math is a terrible program if you ask me. It really does suck Chat Icon
I also have my kids skip over and cross out questions if they are not applicable to the lesson objective.

Also, the kids don't receive textbooks for Go Math, they each have their own workbooks to write in/ tear out pages as needed.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?

Do I think it's cause for alarm as far behavioral or your son having issues or even being a bad kid.. Heck no.

However, I think it was disrespectful and the teacher was not overreacting by emailing you. I would have wanted to know if my son did this and would make my son apologize. I'm sure your son didn't see it as being disrespectful or had that intent but I think this is a good teaching lesson on respecting authority.

Eta: I make my son apologize to the teacher when he is being disruptive and bad in school. And actually so does his Kung Fu instructor. It's all about respecting his teacher and her time.

Thank you, everyone!

Here is the way I see it: the teacher asks to cross it out so he did and added "sucks" because if the teacher said to cross it out the problem probably sucks!

This would be my take on it too. The teacher probably said it wasn't a good problem and he labeled it. I would ask him why he wrote it before getting too worried about it.

I agree-I don't ike hearing people/kids say this. My kids aren't allowed to say sucks, shut up, stupid, etc. A slew of words that are no necessarily "bad" words but I don't like them coming out of my kid's mouth.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?

Teacher handled it well. I would just sit him down and tell him not to do it again. Wouldnt punish him, wouldnt make him apologize to teacher either.
