Is this cause for alarm?
I would love to hear opinions on this!
My son's teacher emailed me today saying:
"I wanted you to see what B did to his math book. I asked them to cross this problem out."
Attached to the email was a picture of the the math book page with problem crossed out and an arrow pointing to at with the word "Sucks" next to it.
Is this something to be conserned with? A cry for help? Elevated level of aggression?
What do people here think? TIA!

I would just ask him about it. I don't think its a big deal. Maybe he is just testing his boundaries a little bit. I would not make a huge deal but just ask him "hey buddy what happened here?"

Re: Is this cause for alarm?
I wouldn't be pleased. I wound find that as blatant disrespect to his teacher. I don't think it's a cry for help or anything drastic like that, I just think it was in poor taste. He probably thought it was funny at the time, heck I can see the humor in it too. But he needs to know that's not how you act. If it was my DS, I would have him write a letter apologizing to his teacher and he would also be losing something for a week- in our case it would be iPad privileges, but you can take away whatever works best in your house.

Maybe he just hates math? I can sympathize, I hate it too! I agree. Maybe he really doesn't like math, or he doesn't like the teacher or, he was struggling with the lesson or he is just having a bad day. I would talk to him about it and see what he is thinking and feeling. i don't think it sounds aggressive.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?
Thank you, everyone!
Here is the way I see it: the teacher asks to cross it out so he did and added "sucks" because if the teacher said to cross it out the problem probably sucks!
Also, perhaps my grasp of American slang is failing me in this particular instance but is "sucks" such a terrible word that it warrants an apology letter?

I think it warrants a discussion. I would have your son apologize to the teacher what he did could be interpreted as disrespectful. A student should not be using the word sucks in the classroom- JMO

Generally, its not a bad word and I use it way too much. However, in the school context, it is not an appropriate word and I think it warrants an apology especially since the teacher emailed you about it.

If he had used the word in a conversation, it wouldn't phase me in the slightest. In and of itself, sucks isn't a bad word. But he used it in school and basically, in my opinion, it was directed at the teacher since it was a given that she would ultimately see it. So yes, I stand behind what I said initially. I believe an apology is warranted here.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?
I actually think the teacher overreacted. Honestly, unless your DS has a pattern of writing inappropriate things or is generally seen as problematic in the classroom the teacher really should've handled it on her own. She could have just given him a warning and explained that it was not appropriate to write on his paper. Then move on. Emailing it to you seems a bit much, it's not that big of a deal.
However, since she did, I'd tell him to not do that in the future and leave it at that. I don't think what he did warrants punishment or writing an apology letter, I think that's a bit much for a one time minor offense. Kids do lots of dumb things but not everything is they do is cause for a major blow up. This is minor, just address it since the teacher emailed and then let it go.
ETA - I say this as a former elementary school teacher myself, if it were me I would not have contacted the parents if this was a first time offense.

I remember getting in HUGE trouble with my Dad for using that word at around the same age. Regardless of how he meant it, it was inappropriate to write in his math book.
(Although, I do sympathize. I hated math.)

Re: Is this cause for alarm?
Your son is correct - Go Math Sucks - big time. I would make him write a note of apology to the teacher though as it is not an appropriate word to write on her school work.

While I personally do not think it is a big deal, we are actually having the same problem with my daughter. She keeps saying things are "stupid". Basically she is not getting in trouble for it but we have been talking to her about appropriate words to use in a school setting and that she needs to respect the adults and peers at school by only using kind words.

Unless it's a habitual thing, I really don't think it's a big deal. I would not make him write a letter of apology to the teacher. That is insane to me

I would support the teacher unless he/she has a habit of overreacting to this kind of thing.

Re: Is this cause for alarm?
I think he meant that it sucks that they couldn't do that problem.... I'm glad to hear that he loves math. We need more kids like that. Math is awesome, especially since math pretty much runs the world, and everything we do in it.
I'd like to find out why the teacher had them cross out a problem in a math book? Why not just skip it? I'm not a fan of writing in text books for most reasons....
