POLL: Home Alarm System
We are about to close on our first house in Lindenhurst.
An issue has come up that we can not agree on.
We both work in NYC and are out of the house for 12 hours a day. It's an older house, 3 entry doors, lots of 1st floor windows, (need replacing soon).
We can't agree as to whether or not we should get a home alarm system, with central monitoring, installed.
Any advice?

We did, we would have anyway, but we did it right away because DH works nights and we both feel sooo much better with it. I will never have a house without one now, there's even a panic button on my keychain so if I'm walking up the driveway at night and something happens I can alert the police. It really gives me a sense of security.

I am in the security business...so the first thing I did was have an alarm installed.
Let me tell you why I think its a good idea...
here is the #1 reason...
At the end of the day - when I come home, and I am alone...and I put my key in that door and the alarm starts beeping - i KNOW for sure I am the only person in the house - and was all day. I know I am safe.
If you think its to protect your belongings its really not...I mean lets be honest - my alarm went off the other day - I made it home from work - walked the dog and watched Oprah before the cops showed up. Its not high on their priority list. (sad, but true - too many false alarms)
I also have smoke detectors and Carbon monoxide detectors built into my alarm system (the fire dept responds MUCH quicker)
which makes me feel safer.
and yes, I do believe it will deter someone from breaking into my house - he might chose a house without an alarm over mine.
Think about protecting you and your family - think of it that way - not in the way of your belongings....
ETA - it also saves you some money on your homeowners insurance.

We have ADT with Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors.

We just purchased a house with an alarm system. If it didn't have one already, we would have had one installed. Better safe than sorry!!
