Is sugarless gum safe?
Is sugarless gum safe to chew during pregnancy even though it has aspartame in it?
Thanks!

Re: Is sugarless gum safe?
I found this on a website: HTH
ALL gum have artificial sweetener, even the one's with no sugar in it. Pregnant women should avoid artificial sweetener at all costs. They have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and exposing a chemical like that to a developing fetus/baby can do much more harm than to anyone else. Their cells are constantly changing and growing a such a rapid pace, that carcinogens that may have a small or slow effect on adults will have a huge and rapid impact on someone growing so fast. Avoid gum. Drink more water.

Don't worry I think it's a little exaggerated at times, do you chew gum a lot? If you do at least try to cut down. Ask your doctor at your next visit he/she will be able to let you know for sure. GL

Don't get upset...I chewed sugar-free gum every so often and you see how my son is...perfectly fine! I also drank diet coke. So don't worry about what's behind you but if going forward it worries you...maybe get a small toothbrush and toothpaste to leave in your bag.

Re: Is sugarless gum safe?
At the end of my pregnancy w/Hayley I had GD and was allowed to drink Diet Coke and eat things that had aspertame in it.
If you chewed a few packs a day daily then I think you would have a problem but if it just once inaa while I would not worry....everything in moderation

Re: Is sugarless gum safe?
Some weeks I go without chewing gum, but other weeks I may go through a pack or so.
I feel like I've been trying to be so careful about everything, so it's just upsetting to forget something so obvious.
I'll try not to worry about it. At least I have my Level II tomorrow and hopefully will be reassured that everything is ok. I would have been a lot more upset if I had to wait a long time before my next sono.
Anyway, thanks ladies for making me feel better!
