I don't think it's tacky at all. I say go for it. I'm sure your family that is visiting would love to help you out if you ask.

I think it's a GREAT idea.....and you could call it a "Meet and Greet" for Joey instead.
Why not ask a few close close friends to help you plan....do paper goods, some finger foods, chips and dip....simple stuff that can be picked at throughout the day instead of actual food that needs to be cooked and gets cold.
Have a cooler with cans of soda and beer
Wish I could come!
This is my thought exactly!
Either way, I do not think it is tacky.

Re: Is it tacky
I think it is a great idea! I agree with the rest of the posters - a potluck would be ideal.
DH and I went out and celebrated with friends before his first surgery, before beginning chemo, etc. It really helps to have family and friends around you! It also helps those that want to do something but aren't quite sure what to do. We had friends that just didn't know what to say, but we found that comforting them, comforted us. Does that make sense? And, in the end we moved past the cancer and found things to laugh about.
All the best to you!!!

I think that's a great idea! I'm sure all of your friends want to see you before the surgery as much as you want to see them.

I like the potluck idea and the "meet and greet Joey" theme.
Not only do I not think it is tacky, but I bet there are a lot of friends that would like to do something to help you right now, and this would give them that opportunity.

I didn't read all the responses to this post, so sorry if I'm repeating. But I definately think people will understand. In fact, I think you can ask everyone to bring their own dish. I'm sure they would be more than happy to.

two words-- Pot Luck. I think it's a great idea and I am sure your friends will be excited to bring stuff over.
I agree! Not tacky at all and I am sure your friends/family would be more than happy to cooperate!
And look what I found- an "e-vite" (e-mail invitation) for a Pot Luck Party!

Re: Is it tacky
my Mom did something like this- she called it an "open house"- she invited everyone to come over and wish her well
I like the pot luck idea- and picking a few freinds to help and organize would make it easier- putting people in charge of things
maybe divide of the guest and mark on the invite for some people to be bring drinks, chips and dips, main course, salad and dessert to make sure you don't get too much of one thing
I certainly don't think it's tacky- and if I was invited I would be fine with bringing something

Deb, as everyone else already said.. I do not think the idea is tacky whatsoever - I think having a nice celebration before you head off for Texas and gathering all of your friends/loved ones together is just a fabulous idea
This is perfect!
