Is it tacky

All of our friends most certainly know what is going on with me and my (insert whispiring voice saying "cancer" ala my grandma here). I want to have a party! I guess not really a party but I want to have a night designated for people to come over to our house (at whatever time they please) so that I may see everyone in one shot before surgery. However, I don't have a lot of time nor do I have a lot of energy these days to go out and buy lots of food, drinks, and party type items and prepare them.
is that really wrong or do you think people would understand?
I thought of hiring a caterer but our medical bills are really starting to pile up already Chat Icon

Re: Is it tacky

I don't think it's tacky at all...I'm sure EVERYONE will understand and when they ask if they can bring anything...don't be afraid to say yes. Have them all bring the food and drink...I'm sure they're not looking for you to prepare a feast for them.

Re: Is it tacky

Deb - I agree with the other ladies - not tacky. I think it's absolutely fine to have a party. If you feel badly not having stuff - order a couple of pizzas and tell everyone it's potluck and to bring something to go along with the pizza - salads, another dish, drinks, etc.

OMG please - if I went to your house I wouldnt expect you to get up from your seat to greet me! No food necessary. Anyone who you are close enough to coming over would bring something I am sure.

I agree!
I think they would completely understand and besides, I bet people are tripping over themselves to do something, anything for you right now - if your only request as of now is to see their smiling faces before your surgery and bring a dish.... no, not tacky at all!

I really don't think this is tacky at all. I'm sure every one is understanding and will just want to see you and the baby. Food shouldn't even matter. I wouldn't go crazy over that. Chat Icon

No freakin' way!

if Darren wore a polyester shirt, bellbottoms and white platforms, it might be a Tad bit tacky. but anything short of that. nope. no way.

hey- even if you charged admission at the door... i still wouldn't think its tacky. you ARE, afterall, the hottest thing to hit medical journals since Penicillin! Chat Icon

Ugh... i swear... its what Mike wears to every party, and i'm like "okayyyy at least get black platforms to be a little more modest" Chat Icon

so, seeing as him and darren have so much in common- it was an easy assumption Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is it tacky

well deb, you always count on me for my honesty, so i will give it to you

do i think it's tacky to ask people to bring things? no way - make it a pot luck - people do it all the time and it's fine.

However, I'm going to go a different way here. Like you say, the people you invite know your situation and know what you are about to go through - they may see this more as a "pity" party, rather than a simple gathering to see friends, which is what your main intention is - you just want to see your friends.

I'll give you an example - Christine's aunt had cancer and before one of her procedures, she had a BBQ to see everyone. I'll admit it, everyone, including us, felt awkward. How do you act? How do you say good night without getting emotional?

So, I'm not saying don't do it - but you have to make it clear that if you don't want a pity party, you should state it up front.
