well deb, you always count on me for my honesty, so i will give it to you

do i think it's tacky to ask people to bring things? no way - make it a pot luck - people do it all the time and it's fine.

However, I'm going to go a different way here. Like you say, the people you invite know your situation and know what you are about to go through - they may see this more as a "pity" party, rather than a simple gathering to see friends, which is what your main intention is - you just want to see your friends.

I'll give you an example - Christine's aunt had cancer and before one of her procedures, she had a BBQ to see everyone. I'll admit it, everyone, including us, felt awkward. How do you act? How do you say good night without getting emotional?

So, I'm not saying don't do it - but you have to make it clear that if you don't want a pity party, you should state it up front.

I do see that point loud nad clear. I don't want a pity party and I THINK my friends know that. I have already set up a clause that won't allow people to cry, none of that high pitched sorrow voice crap and last but not least none of those puppy dog pity eyes.
This has been stated by me to all fo them since May when I first got diagnosed.

Think thats enough? Its going to be casual and invites will go out over e-mail...think its cool if I just clarify that in the email?

I think it is fine. I mean your friends know you, they know your personality, I since you will be away and busy getting better for a while it is a nice way to see everyone before you have to concentrate on you. Chat Icon

Re: Is it tacky

I don't think it is tacky at all. I think some of your friends who are looking for something to do to help you would love to bring over a dish.

I agree with everyone else not tacky at all. The only reservation I would have is to clear it with your doctors. The last thing you need before undergoing radiation or chemo is a cold.

Now do we start a thread about good songs for this party?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is it tacky

not tacky at all!

tell them to bring thier fave wine or beer. all you need ot do is buy some chips to just have "something" to munch on.
no one is expecting you to buy a big meal or cook anything! but chips and pretzels are a nice touch

Re: Is it tacky

I think it's a GREAT idea.....and you could call it a "Meet and Greet" for Joey instead.

Why not ask a few close close friends to help you plan....do paper goods, some finger foods, chips and dip....simple stuff that can be picked at throughout the day instead of actual food that needs to be cooked and gets cold.

Have a cooler with cans of soda and beer

Wish I could come!Chat Icon

Re: Is it tacky

Of course everyone will understand and I know they'll want to see you also. Why not just make it a BBQ and let everyone know that it's burgers and hotdogs (not that they'll care) and if Darran doesn't want to work the grill, just get a few pizzas or make it a pot luck dinner. When we have get togethers our friends always bring stuff and we do the same when they have us over. Pot Luck dinners are really fun, I know that we love them :0)!

Kelly

Deb I am going to venture to say that your friends would like to help you out as much as we do and they would be thrilled to bring a dish over and hang out with you to cheer you on before your surgery! I know I would!Chat Icon

I think you should invite plenty of people and ask everyone to bring something. I don't think they would mind.

two words-- Pot Luck. I think it's a great idea and I am sure your friends will be excited to bring stuff over.

I agree!
I think they would completely understand and besides, I bet people are tripping over themselves to do something, anything for you right now - if your only request as of now is to see their smiling faces before your surgery and bring a dish.... no, not tacky at all!

I completely agree!!

Re: Is it tacky

Not tacky at all - everyone loves a pot luck. Or just do it after dinner as chips and drinks....or after dinner and have everyone bring dessert - just make some coffee.

Re: Is it tacky

Not tacky at all! Great idea! I agree with the whole Pot Luck thing. I'd probably just make it a fun Pot Luck party to "brighten your day" or to just hang out (more than just to see them before your surgery, if you know what I mean). This way it doesn't feel (to you) or look (to your friends) like a pity party or make them feel uncomfortable about it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is it tacky

I think it's a wonderful idea and not tacky at all. I agree that it's a good idea to make it a potluck and I also think it's a good idea to make people aware in the e-mail that it's not a pity party. You understandably want to enjoy the party! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Definitely not tacky at all. I think it's a great idea and I like Shana's idea of calling it a meet & greet for Joey. Your friends will definitely want to see you and bring something. And, I think it's a great booster for you before surgery. Being in good spirits will definitely help.

Re: Is it tacky

Deb I dont think its tacky at all I think having a pot luck (like everyone else said) is a great idea you can also have later on a dessert bar if everyone brings dessert too. I want to wish you goodluck in everything and my prayers are with you.
