DH and I are both "white" but DH is really olive toned Italian. When he used to work at Sears when we were in college, people would always ask him for help in spanish. Whenever we go to Mexico, usually once a year, people always think he's Mexican- and I'm his gringo girlfriend. Chat Icon

Re: Interracial Romace....

The man I dated prior to DH was Columbian and Portuegse, from his mother's side and Irish from his father's side. When him and I went on a Cruise together...a few young Black girls kept making comments every time they saw us together...."White Girl needs to leave the brothers alone"..."Look at the White girl trying to be Ghetto"...I actually never ever in my life felt racism until that trip. There was one afternoon on the Cruise that I went to the Bar to get us some drinks...and my X went into the pool...these girls saw him alone and took the oppurtunity to ask him "What are you doing with that White Girl...You too good to Date a Sister". He told them that he has never dated anyone for their race or religion...and he also informed them that he wasn't Black...and that he himself is mixed. After that they really didn't make anymore comments...but one of the singers on the Cruise did...she sat on my X's lap and told me..."let me show you how the sister's do it"

I have never dated or not dated someone based on religion or race...no one I knew really ever gave me and grief for dating outside my religion or race...until that trip. Just goes to show how narrow minded people are.

I have dated outside my race, and aside from annoying relatives and looks on the train, it wasn't so bad. I still can;t believe the looks people were NOT ashamed to give us.

Never dated outside my race, but don't see what the big deal is if you do. If two people are happy, what difference does it make.

My niece is half Malaysian and she is the light of my life.

I feel the same way!!! You know, I'm of the opinion that if two people love one another - no matter who they are, whether different races, or colors, same sex, whatever - then who is anyone to judge their relationship? If it works for them then let them be. There's too much hate in this world, let the people who love one another love one another!!! Chat Icon

My X did say something to the singer when the show was over....she did apologize to me and admitted that what she did was hurtful.

I have to admit that this experience really was an eye opener. My X had told me that there were members of his Irish side that treated him different because he skin was so dark...he has a brother who took after the father and is very fair skin...adn the family did treat the brother differently.

Re: Interracial Romace....

I am Irish American married to Puerto Rican. Between the two of us, it never comes up. For some reasons outsiders love to hate.

What drives me insane is when people ask me, "Oh you date Spanish guys" ahhh no, I married a man who happens to be Puerto Rican.

Many people have asked me what my parents thought, and I instantly get angry that they don't ask me what his parents though. Mine accept the fact that I am an adult and it is my life, they have no say. His on the other hand call him white and gringo. They always bring it up.

One of my cousins asked me am I going to mind it if my kids don't look like me at all....no, if they don't look like me, they are going to look like the love of my life.

Girls at the food court in the mall I would love to kill....He ordered in English, serve him in English!!! Aye Papi, blah blah blah....his name is Leo and he wants pork and rice, please simply serve it.Chat Icon

I went to a very white HS in the country. DH and his brother were one of a handful of minorities. The other kids were adopted. So many comments about me being ghetto and looking for a gang to join. It was so silly to me.

My ILS are huge at trying to cause a division. I learned how to cook rice, I make a great flan, and I am out there during the Puerto Rican day parade. What more do people want?

sorry, vent over!!

Re: Interracial Romace....

I'm hispanic and Anthony is Irish/Italian.

I have yet to experince any racism because we are an interracial couple. But, if I ever do, which I am always prepared for, I will not be shocked just disappointed.

This might sound really wierd but my DH is Colombian/Ecuadorian and I am Irish/German and I've truly never thought about the fact that we're an "interracial" couple.

I am hispanic (mexican-american born and raised in Tx) and DH is Jewish (born and Raised in LI)

I feel our different race, religion and culture compliments one another. I fit in quite nicely with his family and he fits in nicely with mine.

Yes, it probably would of been easier if we married within our own race, religion and culture but, love has no boundaries.

ETA: It is nice to know that there are several interacial couples out there!!

Re: Interracial Romace....

I haven't it but my cousins have. My mom told me it wouldn't have been an issue, but with my dad's side, it certainly was. So, what do all the Irish/Italian girls in the family do? They date and marry Hispanic and Black guys. They got a rise from the family but were never disowned. I think the biggest issue was NOT so much color, as everyone thought it would be in the beginning, but rather, what kind of men, or shall I say in the case of these two, what kind of a-holes they were. Kids entered the picture and these men were not fathering material, but those kids are loved more than anything.

However, after some deep discussions, it was concluded that there were disgraceful men in ALL races. Look at Scott Peterson. Nice looking white boy. Deeply disturbed. What parent would choose that for their daughter over a nice, decent, hard working, caring, albeit from another race kind of guy. Sorry, give me Denzel or Cuba over Tom Cruise or Tommy Lee ANYDAY!!!!!!! Not to sound like a bumpersticker, but basically it's the quality of the man that matters, not the color.

Re: Interracial Romace....

The man I dated before DH was jamaican...

We were completly opposite in appearance... I was small, blonde, green eyes, and Im soooo pale...

And he was sooo tall, and so dark...

EVERYONE looked at us funny...and people who I NEVER EVER would think would have a problem with it did...

To be honest- it never even occurred to me that we were a different race...(I mean I obviously knew...but that never played a role in my dating him)

I cant even begin to tell you the things people would say to me...

I dont think there is anything wrong with it....

Last night's Oprah was about the movie Something New, about an interracial romance.

Have you ever dated or did you marry someone outside your race? If so were there repercussions that you faced because of it?

In the end does it really matter?

Yes, I'm 1/2 of an interracial couple. )He's the better half. Don't tell him I said that Chat Icon ) We have had many repercussions because of our relationship, but you don't choose who you want to fall in love with. When you do finally fall in love, color of skin, or someone's background, etc doesn't come into play because you're so happy that you've found someone and you fall so deep in love with the person inside that you don't notice the person on the outside, and when and if you do, it doesn't matter either way. Chat Icon

In the end, all that matters is that you're happy, and if it means sacrifices for a lifetime of happiness, then I suggest you go for it! I did, and I don't regret it one bit!!

I love my babyboy!! Chat Icon
