"I just think people should date people in their own race so things don't get confused".
I think Latinos are very bad within our own culture. For example my parents are both Salvis(El Salvador) and my dad is a lot darker than my mom. My grandparents gave my mom so much cr@p about my dad because of his skin color. It makes no sense!!!
The same thing happened to my best friend. She is a light skinned Colombian and her boyfriend was a dark skinned Panamanian. Her parents came down on her for it and I just couldnt understand why.

Re: Interracial Romace....
Posted by LadyLainez Have you ever dated or did you marry someone outside your race? If so were there repercussions that you faced because of it?
Im black married white. In my dateing history, i face many obstcles trying to be happy. Parents banning me from seeing there daughters, racial slurs, etc....
Even to this day, I have never talked to DW parents because of the mere color of my skin.

In the end does it really matter?
Well, it shouldn't be but for many uneductated individuals, aparently it does matter.

I have dated outside my race in the past and I noticed that people wouls just stare at us like they are so shocked by what they see. This only happens here in the United States. When we would travel to Europe and the caribbean no one stared at us it was like nothing. So having said this, it seems to me that here in the United States people have not not overcome the whole race issues. Quite frankly I think that whoever are caught up in race issues and people who are prejudice is so ignorant. People are people no matter what race one may be.
Having travelled pretty extensively in Europe for the past two years, I have to agree. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see an older interracial couple. I think the US is catching on, but a little slower than most places.
I went to a predominantly white high school and then college - so I don't think I really had many opportunities to date outside my race, if that makes any sense....and I'm not sure if, when I was younger, I would've been mature enough to handle it - is that weird? I don't know if "mature" is the right word...I just think that now I'm much quicker to say I think someone is attractive no matter their race...

Re: Interracial Romace....
I am white and DH is Indian and there are definitly cultural differences. I have often felt very excluded and know I have been talked about (in a different language) by his extended family. My family and friends are very accepting of him, it was never even an issue. I think it is sad that people are so ignorrant in todays world. The funny thing is that we are almost not even aware that we are an inter-racial couple. Our daughter happened to come out very light skined and that causes lots of stares and whispering on occassion, usually from Indian people. Growing up I had also dated outside my race on many occassions, and there were some isolated incidents as well.

Re: Interracial Romace....
I dont think I've ever had a white boyfriend, I've never been attracted to white guys. I've always had Puerto Rican boyfriends. I always knew I would marry a PR, for the record I'm Italian and my parents have never had a problem with the races of the guys I dated, it was more the charactor of each person.

Re: Interracial Romace....
my cousin married someone from the middle east & his family was not accepting of her. Do you think certain cultures are more "protective" about their culture?
Does that make sense?

Absolutely. I think every culture has a tendency to want people to stay within their own culture

I think it depends on the individual.
I just remembered, when i was dating my ex bf, he had met my mom and a few of her friends. after he left, these beyatches said to my mother, "well, at least he isn't a dark skinned hispanic." For them it is LITERALLY a color issue, no matter what the race, even their own. they prefered light skinned filipinos to darker ones. their stupidity knew no bounds.

Re: Interracial Romace....
I have never dated outside the race, however, like previously said, it was because I never came across one I was attracted too. If I did, then I would have to consider it...although Daddy would probably disown me.

I think this is really true among immigrants - especially those who live in a neighborhood where there is a concentration of their particular race/culture, etc. I think it's a way of preserving their culture.
Curly, your daughter is gorgeous! and have you ever read Maps for Lovers??? It's about a Pakistani family living in England and is really eye openining about this topic (ie, one daughter is beaten to death for having a Hindu lover, some girls are disowned for dating whites) really interesting!

I work in a school where more than 90% of the kids are African American or Latino, and it's always interesting to me that the older kids get, the more concerned they are with the shade of others' skin color. I see the darker-skinned kids get made fun of and the lighter skinned kids are more popular with the opposite sex. It's really sad, and they just don't get it when I try to explain to them that it makes no sense, that they're disciminating for no good reason (not that there ever is a good reason). And it's also interesting that I don't see those prejudices among the younger kids (5th and 6th grade). And some of the darker skinned girls, especially, who get picked on are really gorgeous, but the kids care more about color.

Re: Interracial Romace....
DH & I have made it a point not to discuss color or race w/ our daughter. She is 6 now but has no clue about races. On St.Patty's day she asks to wear green to celebrate. Once we were at a toy store and asjed me loudly "Can I have that chocolate baby?!?!" People looked at her and laughed. But we don't make races or colors and issue.

Re: Interracial Romace....
My husband is from a different culture than me. We are both Jewish, but my family is from Eastern Europe (ashkenazi Jews) and DH's family is from the middle least (sephardic Jews). The traditions are different and DH can't stand my family's traditional food. Even the way we pray is different. I can't follow at his temple and he can't follow at mine.
Its funny because both DH and my mom grew up in Israel and they speak in Hebrew, which I don't understand very well. Neither of our parents minded us getting married, despite our different cultures. DH is definitely darker than me and his sisters are even darker than him. I can't wait to see our little baby to see which one of us she looks like!
