Interracial Romace....
Last night's Oprah was about the movie Something New, about an interracial romance.
Have you ever dated or did you marry someone outside your race? If so were there repercussions that you faced because of it?
In the end does it really matter?

Re: Interracial Romace....
I have never dated someone outside of my race but its only because I have never been attracted to anyone outside of my race. If I was ever in that situation, I don't think I would have a problem with it.
And, like you said..in the end...does it really matter?? People are people!!

Re: Interracial Romace....
I have never dated any Filipino, but I never purposefully excluded them.
DH is Puerto Rican, and there was only one comment made, very early in our relationship. "Why can't you find a nice Puerto Rican girl to date?", from one of his Aunts. It didn't bother the rest of his family, and they were happy when we got married.
My family is pretty mixed, so it was fine.
We haven't had any real problems, but i notice that when we travel outside the US, people stare.

Re: Interracial Romace....
I am puerto rican/Italian, which, to me, I never gave a second thought to, but when I first started dating JT, whose parents are from Ireland, they had a big problem with the color of my skin. Whatever. I put them in their place one time at dinner when they referred to puerto ricans as "spics". I chewed them new ones. I didn't care what they thought of me because they were so freaking ignorant anyway. They eventually got over the fact that my skin is all of two shades darker than theirs But I STILL have to yell at them when they show their ignorant side. The things that come out of their mouths are disgusting. It's part of the reason I don't like them.
So anyway, to answer the question, I have a hard time with the word "race". Personally, I think there is only ONE race, the human race. And there are just different backgrounds, etc. So if we're looking at it through my eyes, no I've never dated outside my "race" because that'd leave me with farm animals

Re: Interracial Romace....
I married interracially. You know that term sounds so odd to me because I just don't see it that way.
He is White (Italian and Scottish) and I am Dominican. But I just see us as two people who fell in love, got married, and now have a family.
The only repercussion that I can say we've felt is the language barrier between him and my family. All of my family is bilingual though, so it's not like he can't communicate but I know it bugs him when we are all sitting in a room and everyone is speaking spanish. He's learning so he understands alot, but he can't just chime in the way he would like to.
There are some cultural differences but they are minor and don't really cause issues.
The only other thing that bugs both of us is that I have a cousin or two that tend to unknowingly make comments that can sound wrong. Like we'll all be chatting and one of them will say something like "White people must think we are crazy!" And they won't realize what that sounds like to him. At the same time, it's almost like they FORGOT he's white, given that they felt comfortable enough to make a comment like that around him so sometimes it's hard to say if it's good or bad.
Between us, the race thing is literally non-existent. The other day it struck me for the first time that our son is mixed. And I said to him...isn't it funny... my son is half white...your son is half Dominican... we both kind of giggled and said "cool".

Re: Interracial Romace....
I dated a black guy for 2 years and even though I am Hispanic we got stares all the time. It was so strange because we met & we dated & fell in love. It was hard because even though many people in may family said Oh who cares what color he is" it still mattered. I think eventually people do get over it but it was done once they catually got to know him.

Re: Interracial Romace....
Im hispanic and my husband is sicilian. There were no problems with my side of the family, but there were a few of his older family members that were skeptical at first.
Like Rebecca, I too felt we were stared at when we were on honeymoon in aruba.

Re: Interracial Romace....
I just don't get the difference between two people dating..One is Irish, one is Swedish, or two people dating one is Haitian and one is Irish. What's the difference other than their country of origin and the shade of their skin? I just really do not get people who have a problem with this. I really do not understand what is wrong with that. I mean, I'm playing dumb here for the sake of argument, but why are people so freaking ignorant?

Good question....I think our generation is more open minded about these issues then are our parents and so on.

Re: Interracial Romace....
I have dated outside my race in the past and I noticed that people wouls just stare at us like they are so shocked by what they see. This only happens here in the United States. When we would travel to Europe and the caribbean no one stared at us it was like nothing. So having said this, it seems to me that here in the United States people have not not overcome the whole race issues. Quite frankly I think that whoever are caught up in race issues and people who are prejudice is so ignorant. People are people no matter what race one may be.

Oh absolutely! My cousin is currently dating a Philipino guy and while her parents are cool with it, some of our uncles and aunts (who are older) are downright STUPID. When she brought him for Christmas, one of the uncles was speaking in Spanish (so he couldn't understand) to someone and loudly saying things like "I just think people should date people in their own race so things don't get confused". Believe me, he got his azz handed to him that night by several people.

I sure hope so. I mean, my grandfather, who is 90, DENIES that he is puerto rican! He was born in Puerto Rico to puerto rican parents, we have the pictures and birth certificate to PROVE it, however, both his parents died when he was young, so he was shipped to a family in Virginia because he was blonde haired and blue eyed, and lived amongst "white" people his whole life. He claims he is NOT puerto rican. My grandmother, on the other hand, was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Hungary and then Chile, yet claims she is Hungarian (we know from her birth certificate and parents' backgrounds that she's puerto rican). So weird, SOOOOOOOOOO weird. I have no idea where that story came from, I just had to get it off my chest.

I dated outside my race. My Mom swore I was going to marry a Puerto Rican. (3 boyfriends were Puerto Rican) Go figure I married an off the boat Irish guy! But, never once did my parents say why can't you find a nice Irish guy.

I think Latinos are very bad within our own culture. For example my parents are both Salvis(El Salvador) and my dad is a lot darker than my mom. My grandparents gave my mom so much cr@p about my dad because of his skin color. It makes no sense!!!

I think so too- I don't see my peers batting an eye about it, for the most part.
I never dated outside my race, but had I met someone who had all the qualities I wanted in a mate, I would not have been deterred by race. Let's face it, in this day and age, it's HARD to find someone (at least, it was for me) and I would not have excluded anyone on the basis of race.

Re: Interracial Romace....
My DH is black and I'm puerto rican. It's not so much an interracial thing, more of a cultural thing I think, in our case.
We actually have more similarities than differences. We share the same values, morals and religious beliefs. That's what really counts.
..that and the fact that we both love ice cream!!
