Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
Cailen steals presents for me all the time - usually candy bars when he is sitting in the car thing at the supermarket. I usually leave them in the cart if he's already in his car seat and I discover them....

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
I did this a few weeks ago....I was in the supermarket....I had my bag in the child seat, open b/c I had my list sticking out....so I was throwing things in the cart, being quick...so I check out, I'm literally reaching my hand in my bag, not paying attention, pay the lady. I get home and am unpacking the groceries, I open my bag to grab the receipt and low and behold there is an entire box of crackers!!!!!! I turned to DH and I was like "How did I do that?? Suppose someone saw it in my bag and literall thought I stole it!!" He's like "eh! you spend enough in there every week anyway...is 4 bucks gonna break em" So I ate them
also, when I was in limited this weekend...this man walks in with the gorgeous red clutch in his hands and says "My 4 year old walked out of the store with this yesterday, I'm very sorry" he was so cute too! I thought that was stand up of him! (i would've returned a 40 dollar clutch if my child stole it too!!)

My baby grabbed a candy bar from sitting in her stroller during check out. I got to the car and noticed it in her hand. We went back in and I gave it to the first worker I saw. I freak out about karma stuff

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
this happened to me recently at the grocery stroe. Did n't realize I had a McCormicks seasoning in the bottom of my cart never rang it up and when I was taking the packages out of my cart into my car, I realized. It was snowing, cold and I was sooo not going back. I did for a second look up and see if anyone was looking, LOL! so I did have apang of guilt but McCormicks came home with me and I have not looked back! :)

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
This just happened to me too!!
We went to bjs. I was pushing Megan in the stroller and my dh had a cart. I couldnt find him at one point so I threw a pair of 15 dollar sweats over the hood of the stroller. We went to pay and since he had all the stuff in the cart and I wanted to run into another store before we left, I just left with the baby. He comes back from loading up the car, I am walking around fashion bug. I go to leave and hes like, arent ya gonna pay for those? I look down, and it was the sweats. I walked right past the security guard AND a nypd officer out of bjs and they didnt notice..but omg if they would have! I would have been SO EMBARRASSED!!!!!!
I looked back, so the H ELL the store was and just decided to say a prayer and keep them. On the way out though, I had Megan put 5 dollars into the salvation army bucket. It was the right thing to do.

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
GO back and pay for it. By accident, I have left Target with a bottle of shampoo and went back in. It's the right thing to do, it's not mine. Does it matter if it's $10 or $100??? No, the principle is still the same. This topic always baffles me, I can't believe that so many people don't even feel guilty about it.

I would not go back....I have had it happen to me too & didn't feel one bit of guilt about it. I don't believe it is bad karma either bc you didn't "intentionally" do it!

Once you discover it and decide not to return it, how is it not bad karma?

I agree- if you know it's not yours, and you keep it anyway, that's bad karma.

I'd just keep it at this point. it was an honest mistake
This reminds me of a few yrs ago I was Target with my brother. I saw a cute bag there that I wanted so i grabbed the bag and put it over my shoulder (i was carrying a bunch of other things at the time) so i finally make my way to the register. I pay for my items and walk out. So I'm walking to the car and i'm thinking to myself "why did these things only come to $36? The bag alone was $25" so i look down and the bag is still hanging around my arm!! I got in the car and debated on returning it but the store was insanely crowded and my brother convinced me to just take it home.
NOw whenever i'm in Target with him he says (outloud) "So what are we going to steal today??!"
OMG, I laughed out loud at that...
I "stole" something yesterday...not on purpose. I was at Babies R Us and I bought my SIL her shower gifts. I got her the HUGE bathtub and I piled her stuff in it. When I got to the counter, I paid but forgot that I threw the formula dispenser underneath it.
Oops.

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
It's probably not the right thing to do, but....
if I am still at the store, or in the parking lot, I return it.
if I am already home, I don't bother.
My laziness outweighs my guilt if it is a small enough item.

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
Honestly - it depends on the amount of effort to return it. If I discovered it at home, no I'd probably skip it. If I was in the car, I'd probably go back if I was shopping alone.

I don't think it's good or bad karma it's just a matter of knowing what is the right thing to do.
So many people on this thread have mentioned how the same this has happened to them eventually all these little $4 items start to add up.........

Depends on where it was. If it was Target, I'd be happy and go on with my day. If it was a small store, I'd go back.
Exactly what I was thinking

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...
I wouldnt go back. Does that make me a bad person? No. Accidents happen. I wont be feeling guilty for something so small.
My mother on the other hand would go all the way back to the store if she had to.
