Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...

Happened to a friend!!! She left the nail salon with the polish she picked in her bag, she was a WRECK until she went back with it!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think I would've been quite so torn up - I'd go back the next time I passed by, but if that wasn't convenient I might "pay it forward" and give someone else the benefit of my ill gotten gains!!!!

It has happened to me and I have felt SO guilty. Not, "run right back and return it" guilty, more, "yay for me but oops" guilty Chat Icon

Depends on where it was. If it was Target, I'd be happy and go on with my day. If it was a small store, I'd go back.

This time of year especially, no way would I go back in. Many of the people that work there are seasonal and probably have no idea how to handle that situation.

I would laugh it off and move on with my day.. in the whole scheme of things... a $10 item means nothing to the store.. it was an accident, oh well, move on.

Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...

this happened to be -- and i didn't realize it until nearly about 10 days later. i bought a bracelet at kohl's on black friday--found it odd that the case wouldn't close right, and the cashier rang it up and snapped it closed for me.

more than a week later when i was going to wrap it--i realized there were 2 bracelets in the box and that is why it wasn't closing! Chat Icon since so much time had passed....i just chalked it up to a little unexpected "extra" item. i felt a little bad, but i really didn't feel like going back to the store. i guess i have some bad karma coming to me -- oh well. Re: If you completely innocently and accidentally "stole" something small...

I'd just keep it at this point. it was an honest mistakeChat Icon

This reminds me of a few yrs ago I was Target with my brother. I saw a cute bag there that I wanted so i grabbed the bag and put it over my shoulder (i was carrying a bunch of other things at the time) so i finally make my way to the register. I pay for my items and walk out. So I'm walking to the car and i'm thinking to myself "why did these things only come to $36? The bag alone was $25" so i look down and the bag is still hanging around my arm!! I got in the car and debated on returning it but the store was insanely crowded and my brother convinced me to just take it home.

NOw whenever i'm in Target with him he says (outloud) "So what are we going to steal today??!"Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wow--I'm surprised so many people wouldn't go back. I have way too much guilt for that.

DH ran across the street to get wrapping paper in CVS once & saw soemthing else I needed, so he ran back to tell me about it & forgot he had the paper in his hand.

He didn't realize it untill after he wrapped the gifts, so he went back with shrink wrap with the sticker on it, for them to scan. We both felt awful--the cashier was confused.

I walked out of RiteAid with a hand mixer once & walked back & put it on
the shelf. I didn't want it, but I forgot I was still carrying it.

That's what happened!

It was a DVD for DH. And I had a giant tub of kitty litter in the cart that the cashier had to scan while it was in there because I couldn't lift it out again, so he looked in the cart too!Chat Icon

I guess I'm one of the only dorks that would have brought it back. For me, it doesn't matter what consequence it has on the store...it matters what consequence it has on my own conscience.

Although I do admit I got into a morally questionable situation regarding a carseat and a store's error Chat Icon Chat Icon

If it was a complete accident, then I think it is just meant to be and I would keep it as well. I wouldn't feel bad about it either because it was an accident.

I wouldn't feel guilty that the accident happened, but I would sure feel guilty about keeping it without paying for it.

Same for me. Well not the car seat, but the first paragraph. I could never live with the guilt and I would be scared that karma would come back and get me in a bad way.

I recently did this. The item was $4 and I feld so guilty, not sure why. I went back and was going to pay for it but the lines were long. I left it there.
