How would you handle teasing on the bus?
Last yr, DS was in kindergarten and sat in the front of the bus with the other kindergarteners. The school bus ride home was my son's favorite part of the day. He often told me vivid stories of kids fighting, hitting and pushing on the bus.
Now DS is in first grade and can sit anywhere on the bus. Apparently some older kids on the bus tease and bully the younger kids on the bus. DS came home in tears yesterday.
DH thinks this is not a big deal and DS will endure much worse in the coming years. I obviously do not like my child being teased on the bus home.
I am a now SAHM and can easily pick up DS from school. I personally prefer to pick up vs go to the bus stop.
Would you just pick up from school or continue with the bus?
I also happen to know the mom of one of the kids doing the teasing. I told DS that I would talk to the boy's mom if it continued for too long. At the same time, I don't necessarily want to intervene because I know I won't always be able to rescue DS.

My first instinct is to just pick him up. I am going to see how it goes over the next few days.
I actually know one of the offender's moms from the PTA. Should I text her? Call her?
I thought it was supposed to get easier when they got older!!!!

Re: How would you handle teasing on the bus?
I would complain to the school and let them handle it first.
On my DD's bus they all have to sit according to grade, Kindergarten kids in front and the oldest kids (6th grade) end up in the back. Last year when my DD was in 1st they had moved on of the sixth grade kids to the front because he was misbehaving and of course he started to bother the little ones. My DD wasn't coming home crying or anything but she was telling me things he was teaching them that were inappropriate. I immediately spoke with the principal and they handled everything so well and so quickly. The boy was spoken to and punished, they spoke with his parents, and he was moved back away from the little kids. He was never a problem again.
Kids should not be afraid to take their bus or come home crying, that's not fair to them and they shouldn't have to tolerate that. I would speak to the school first about the problem and see how they handle it BEFORE pulling him and driving him every day. More than anything, I would do my best to put a stop to it, kids who torment other children need to be called out and dealt with.............it's the ONLY way they will learn to treat other people with respect. They shouldn't get away with it.

Re: How would you handle teasing on the bus?
I can see where your husband is coming from what kind of teasing is going on.
Have you suggested to your son to stick up for himself and tell the kids to stop saying what they are saying. most of the times bullies bully because the person being bullied doesn't stand up for themselves .
I would have him try that and if it still continues I would than probably intervene and either have someone talk to the kids that are doing the bullying.
where is the bus driver during this while I get he/she may not be able to do something at the exact moment but I would hope he would report it to the school

I emailed the principal and she got back to right away, I couldn't believe how fast she responded. After everything was said and done the vice principal called me personally to explain how things were handled and to thank me for bringing it to their attention. I appreciated the follow up.
I didn't want to be "that parent" either BUT I felt like I had to worry more about what was best for my DD than being "that parent". I am so glad I said something, it was the right thing to do and there were never issues again.

The problem is that at 6 yrs old they are WAY too young to confidently stick up for themselves against a kid who is YEARS older. They are still babies at 6 yrs old, my DD didn't even understand someone being mean at that point or doing/saying things that were wrong. They are so innocent at that age. I think it's worth talking to your kids at EVERY age about sticking up for themselves BUT I think as parents we HAVE to protect our kids when they are that young because they aren't really capable of doing it themselves yet. Her son is coming home crying, that is unacceptable. As the parent of that child, I couldn't sit by and let that continue.

Thank you for the input. I sent the principal a short email. The school gives special attention to kindergarteners but age 6 is still very young. I am sure this is not the first or last time there will be teasing/bullying on a bus.

How would you handle teasing on the bus?
when miki was in kindergarten, some 4th grade bully put his hands on her throat on the bus - I was flipping out and wanted to go to the boys house and speak to his guardians (he lived with his grandparents) - I started with the school and since there were witnesses, he was suspended from the bus (and school) for 3 days. I told mikayla if he ever touched her again, she could defend herself (he never messed with her again though) and I told the school the same. we never had any other issues. I would call the school, definitely - they have a ZERO tolerance policy for bullying.

They SHOULD tattle when kids are bullying them That is the problem. Fear of calling people out on it. Fear of being called a 'tattle" So better to put up with @sshole kids? No way.

How would you handle teasing on the bus?
I would first tell my child to stick up for themselves because mommy will not always be there to pick up the pieces. if it continues after that, then speak with the mother. If she doesn't handle it, go to the school.

As someone who was brutally teased on the bus in elementary school, I agree. Intervene, let the school know.

The kid is 6! 6!!!!..............being bullied by an older kid. C'mon, that's EXACTLY your job as a mom right now, they are still little enough where you NEED to protect them. You need to teach them to stick up for themselves BUT you need to protect them too at this young age. They don't really have the skills yet to do it on their own. For the little things, let them work it out. For something like this where they are coming home in tears, h-e-l-l no............as a mom I'd be putting a stop to that.
And personally, I don't think going to the parent is the smart idea. *Most* parents will first get defensive and I think more often than not, it's going to be A LOT harder to get anything changed when you're relying on the parent of the "bad kid" to put a stop to something. The school is there is help protect your child, they should be aware of any bus issues that arise and they can handle things in a way where something is likely to actually get done.
I'm surprised how many people wouldn't try and put a stop to this right away. 6 years old and to expect them to handle it on their own??? And worrying about being a tattle tale??? Seriously?? I'm just .

I agree with hofstra. Def go through the principal, b/c if you remove your kid and pick up, that kid will find a new young kid to pick on. better off stopping. they should have 0 tolerance on a bus

Re: How would you handle teasing on the bus?
I'm sorry your DS is going through it, and you . My DS was punched last year by a 2nd grader, and I went to the principal, it was the last week of school so he barely handled it. This year I now have my DS and DD on the bus, and I hate it, the only reason I don't drive them is bc they want to go on the bus, so maybe ask your DS how he feels about it.
First week, the now 3rd grader was teasing my DS, and after speaking to the bus driver, who was useless, and realizing from a friend who knew the parents, that speaking to them probably would get me no where, I taught my 1st grader to stick up for himself. He hasn't bothered him since, and my little guy feels more confident.
I honestly was shocked bullying happened so early, I was in tears last year and when it happened again. It's not fair these crappy little kids get away with it, and I hate that "tattle" crap. Tattling is when someone isn't sharing, it's not when a child gets hurt or feels bad about themselves.

How would you handle teasing on the bus?
I understand where you are coming from. My school district has the kids sit in rows behind the driver according to their grade. So my son who is in kindergarten sits in the front row while my daughter who is second grade sits a few rows back. Perhaps you could suggest this to the principal to help with teasing from the older kids. Also, I would ask the bus driver what happened maybe he saw it and said something to the kid after your son got off the bus.
