how the h eck are we suppose..
to find a house with a good size yard and in move-in condition in great neck, manhasset, and port washington for under 700k?
my ILs are helping us out with some down payment but they want us to stay close to queens. i know i'm being a spoiled brat about this but i really feel like we're being tie down to certain areas and i want a bigger yard! i don't want to pay 700k for a house but feels like i'm living in an apartment.
vent over!

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
can i ask why you are limiting yourself to those areas?
DH and i restricted ourselves in the beginning but once we expanded our search a bit we found a great house, on a large property, well within our price range.

You should definitely expand your search. To go a bit farther east really won't be that much further away and you will get so much more for your dollar.

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
I would expand your area some more. IL's might have requested you stay closer to queens, but in the end it's your home and you want something more for your money. You will need to look further east. You can still stay on the north shore and in Nassau. It's not like you would be far from them still. We live in Lindenhurst and my IL's live in Flushing. It only takes us about 35 mins to get to their house. I don't think that is too far. GL!
How about Oyster Bay, Huntington, Syosset, Woodbury, Planiview, Bethpage, Farmingdale, Greenlawn.

well...your having a hard time b/c your budget doesn't match your wish list - $700K in the most expensive areas of Long Island is a little unrealistic
I think it's time to expand your search

ITA with this.
we actually ended up expanding our search into Suffolk County and we are so glad we did! you don't have to go that far but just a little further east and you'll have much better luck. you have a great budget to work with, just not in those areas.

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
it is very generous that your ILs are offering you money for the DP but unfair that they are including restrictions and limitations.
are they sick or elderly and require that you live nearby or are they selfish and controlling? if the latter, i would continue to search in their desired areas but expand the search to include YOUR desired areas. since this is going to YOUR home you should purchase in an area that YOU & DH love.

no, they are quite active. FIL still have a couple of years till retirement; MIL retired about 10 years ago. both are very active in church and community. they ARE very generous but their main thing is wanting us a little closer and their grandkids to grow up in an asian community. i understand both parts but i don't see why we have to live on top of each other when we have to pay so much for a house? for some people that's been in queens for some many years, long island is a different state to them (DH was the same way before). syosset, bethpage, planview, and even glen head is consider far
DH and i both agreed that we're not going to let their "preferences" restrict us...it's just now slowly communicate that point to them.

Even if you move a little south (below the expressway...New Hyde Park, Floral Park, Williston Park, etc) you'll find much more reasonably priced houses.
We're in Port Washington because my DH is from there...and it's depressing how little we have for much we spent.

Try Syosset too. I think there is a large Asian population.
It's a great area and has great schools.
It's right off the highway too..good location and close to everything.

I wouldn't waste your time in Manhasset - for what you get under $700,000 - it is terrible That is where we are looking so I feel your pain! Pickings are slim in our price range too!

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
I would start letting them know...and if you truly feel it's limiting, it may be a choice you have to make. Take the $ and deal with their wishes, or take the $ and know you upset them. Or not take the $ at all. But in the end, you have to decide what is best for you and your family in the long run.
That's why I won't take a gift that has a condition attached to it. No way.

ITA you can get something in these areas in your price range. Like the
others have said it is nice of your parents, maybe you should take them house
hunting with you so they can see what those areas have to offer.

did you look at all in new hyde park behind the lake success shopping center? i am not sure but the high school there is great neck south i believe.
did you look in great neck at the smaller homes south of northern near great neck road? there are some nice older homes there.
what about manhasset hills or anything with herricks schools? still very close to queens.

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
I would show your inlaws what you can get for that amount in those neighborhoods.
Our parents have no clue what houses are priced at nowadays. They are used to what they paid, they just don't get it. I remember having that fight with my parents when we first were house-hunting. They remember paying $100,000 for their house in Commack and they thought the houses were worth $300,000 back in 2004 in Commack. Obviously, they were worth more like $500,000 and my parents were shocked.

We started looking in those areas too because DH's work is in Bayside, but we ended up going a little further east and we are still in Nassau and I don't find it all that far to head to the Queens border.....
I know Syosset has a large Asian population, and there are some very reasonable finds in your price range.

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
thank you all for your replies!
i think we would try to get them and come to look at houses with us so they can see what's out there.
areas some of you mentioned we already thought about but it's either too far or that the taxes are crazy. in any case, i hope we can find a happy medium.

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
What is their definition of an Asian neighborhood - do they mean something very specific, like Chinese, Japanese, Indian? - or would they prefer a mix of Asian ethnicities?
Herricks is a lovely area with excellent schools. The area has a high Indian population. I think the Bangladeshi population might be growing there as well.
Williston Park has a growing Indian population as well - I think there is also a southeast asian population growing there.
I'm not sure of Long Island neighborhoods that have a specifically strong Chinese or Korean demographic - analogous to Flushing, NY.

my inlaws are the same way and my MIL expects us to live in bayside or great neck, they know how much $ it is to buy there, but I am not willing to sacrifice that much for a smaller home. they don't understand that not everyone can afford to live in Great neck even if you do have some help financially

Re: how the h eck are we suppose..
I'm not sure how big of a house you want, but have you seen some of the houses in the Park or Presidential section of Port Wash? I would think you could find something in that price range there, though the properties are not large.
You could try Roslyn Hts., Williston Park, or Albertson. Albertson is nice actually, and there are some decent sized homes there, though the properties tend to be small. Glen Head is another possiblity. DH and I looked at towns all over the western end of Nassau, and found none really had huge properties. If you want a lot of yard, you really need to go to Suffolk or further west.
