How serious is this? (Nanny related)
I have a nanny who is great w my kids ( 2 and 11 months and loves them to pieces. They absolutely adore her. On three occasions she has accidentally turned gas on the stove (that I'm aware of) carelessly. Once she realized and turned it off, once I realized after work and it reeked of gas and I told her to be more careful and it's dangerous and I opened the windows. Today while at work my sons therapist (ei) called me to tell me therapy didnt go well bc my son was too clingy BUT also to tell be the house reeked of gas and she inquired w the nanny who said she turned it on by mistake ( hit the stove by the sliding door) and turned it off and it was only on for about 10 min. The therapist asked her to open all the windows. Dh said enough is enough. What are your thoughts? How dangerous Is this? I know an honest mistake but how many times? Now I'm nervous but i otherwise love her...
Only other big issue that comes to mind is dd is a great eater and takes bites of EVERYTHING but only thing I cut up are cherry tomatoes and grapes bc I'm terrified of her choking on those. Nanny is aware and last week I noticed her giving my 2 year old small grape-size cherry tomatoes uncut. I immediately reiterated that they should be cut in half. She said ok but ALSO said my dd doesn't like them cut (which bothered me also -she's 2!! She likes to jump on the couch!!) please share your thoughts. I don't want to fire her if I don't need to but want to do what's best for my kids...

Yikes. I think I'd let her go. I mean, this is VERY dangerous. And if I made that mistake once...I'd make damn sure that the gas wasn't on EVERY time I passed it.

With the oven, remove the knobs. My MIL would leave it on too.
As far as cutting, I pre cut food for my MIL... Who isn't exactly the brightest bulb.
Would upset me that your nanny is not more careful, but in the end... Depends in how much YOU like her.

i'd probably not get rid of her, but i'd install those safety locks on the stove so she can't accidentally turn it on anymore.

I would have fired her yesterday! The second my nanny put my children in harms way ( and she's done this numerous times) I would not feel safe anymore leaving my children with this person. I know it's hard to find someone who we as parents can trust but there has to be a more responsible nanny out there for your family. Sorry you have to go through this

this is a good idea... if she's good with your kids otherwise, I'd keep her and do this and prep any food that you are nervous about...

My initial thought was to fire her. However, we just hired a nanny, and it took forever to find someone we could trust, so I know how tough the process can be.
If you really like this nanny, I'd agree with the other posters about installing safety locks. And with the cherry tomatoes, be firm with her about cutting them. She's your employee, so she really needs to listen to you when it comes to specifics.

Thank you all for the input. If it was a family member maybe I'd give a little more slack but I pay her and this is what she is paid to do and she's not family so it's a little different. I don't know. My dd asks for her- loves her- she's only 2 and know all her shapes and colors and letters bc of her- but these are two huge safety concerns. I don't know if I really should keep (and pay ) a nanny who requires safety measures in place for HER??!! Does that make sense? I don't know. I'm at work and I can't even just quit on the spot either. Also if you fired a full time nanny did you give any form of severance? Maybe ill start looking for other options

I'm sorry you have to make this decision. As much as I wouldn't want to I would let her go. Having the gas on and not realizing it once would be ok but not the second time. Also not cutting up one of the major choking hazards is pretty concerning as well.

Is she turning on the stove accidentally? I know my stove knobs are VERY sensitive and if I accidentally lean into it - it will turn on. We ended up getting these stove knob covers and they work like a charm. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM. Not to mention my 2 year old cant get them off - so thats a plus 
If she's turning the stove on and just forgetting about it...that would be a whole other story and I would strongly consider finding another nanny.
As far as not cutting the cherry tomatoes....that would NOT fly in my house. I'm terrified of choking and this is a HUGE no-no in my book. Regardless of what you ask - your instructions always be followed. If you are really against finding another nanny - I would even go as far as not keeping cherry tomatoes in the house anymore. I know it sounds crazy but I couldn't go everyday thinking she was giving them to the kids uncut.

She is just leaning or passing by the nobs and accidentally turning the gas on- def not turning actual stove on- but you can smell the gas when that happens

I myself have accidentally hit the knob and turned on the stove. DH has REAMED me for it and we don't have a kid yet! One time is a total accident, but byeond that, it's careless and quite frankly dangerous. I would be mortified to make the mistake ONCE, let alone multiple times and have to be corrected.
As far as firing her, I would give her a stern talkting to about the gas. One more time and she's OUT. I would remind her about the cutting as well, but the gas sticks out as a biggie to me.

See to me this is not the same thing as being careless and turning the stove on and then forgetting about it. Know what I mean? She's passing by the knobs and accidentally turning them on which,while dangerous, can easliy be prevented with the knob covers.
I would be concerned as to WHY she doesn't smell the gas??? She should have been able to tell the gas was on.

I'd do the exact same! We installed them at my moms house when the dogs kept jumping up and turning them on. If you love the care she provides to your children than I don't think you should cut her over this. As far as the cuting of your dc food you do need to make it clear what foods need to be cut up.

Honestly, if the knobs on your stove can be so easily tuned on, I would install the covers regardless as your child can accidentally turn them on as well.
That seems like a really poor design flaw.

That sounds very careless to me. Not only is it bad for your kids to be breathing the gas fumes in, but it could cause an explosion!

So I just got home from work and re-checked the stove- it's not that easy to just turn it on. Seems like you actually need to turn it in then turn to side actually.
I've been going back and forth on whether I should become a SAHM (DH doesn't care what I do- would support me either way) and thinking maybe this is a huge red flag and I should just go for it. Def don't have the energy to look for someone new and start all over with interviews. I am by no means just LOOKING for something though. I do enjoy working

I have the knob covers. Nanny or no, they work great and really keep the stove area safe. I wouldn't fire her for that. The kitchen should be baby proofed anyway. Get the knobs, and talk to her about the tomatoes.

Enough is enough. The gas issue is alarming to start with and to have it smell that bad it was on for awhile. The other huge flag is you expressed your concerns with CHOKING hazards and after watching the person you pay to watch your kids and follow your rules ignore that I would be upset. Then to have her make the comment she doesn't like them cut means she has been ignoring you for some time to cater to a 2 year old. This is just to much in my opinion. She could burn you house down and kill your children with the gas or they could choke. If something happened you would never forgive yourself. Become a SAHM and be done with this shenanigans.
