How old to go the city alone with friends?

My daughter is 17.5 and wants to go the city for a day with friends. Daytime only, shopping mostly in Soho. I know every kid is different. She is responsible and smart. Would you allow if it was your child?

I was 15 and doing that so I would certainly let a 17.5yr old, especially in the age of smartphones. As someone else said they'll be going off to college soon.

My SS is now 19 and went alone with friends for the first time before he left for college (last summer). I was a little nervous, but they did fine. And it's different, but this summer he is interning in the city 3 days a week - so he goes in by himself to go to his internship regularly. He has also gone in with friends on other days this summer

Thank you. I was already leaning toward yes, just wanted to make sure I wasn't too lenient. She will be a senior this year so she has another year before college, but I'm sure she can handle it, especially in a group.

I was going to say about 16 1/2 for a mature kid and 17 1/2 for an average maturity kid. If she is with friends, has a cell phone, and is responsible, I would think it should be fine. I was living on my own in college by then.

In NYC many kids ages 13-14 commute daily from Queens to Manhattan for high school. 17 is totally ok to go alone.

I would let my child go. I went alone for the first time at 18-19. I went on vacation to another state with my friends at 19.

I went to high school in the city when I was a freshman in high school. My friends and I used to go out into the city on the subway as a group before that because many of us were planning to go to hs in the city and our parents wanted us to feel comfortable.

This fear of the city is very much a LI thing and I find it absolutely laughable. Anything can happen anywhere. IMO, bad things are far less likely to happen in the city with tons of people around than they are in a mall or park on LI.

My son was allowed to go with friends as a freshman. I guess living in Queens makes me more open to the idea.

I'll preface this by saying I don't have kids, but I would say yes! Was going into the city with friends well before that. I was already in college at 17 1/2

I tend to be more overprotective than most , but I think 17 is just old enough to spend a day in the city with friends. I'd let her go if she's responsible. Any younger I probably would have said no.

Id say thats fine. We used to go when we were 17 and 18 years old.

That's fine. I'm a city kid so I've been commuting to Manhattan from Queens ever since I was 13. SoHo is a great area for her first trip into the city without a parent!

The only thing I was nervous about was the subway really, since they do not know their way around the subway system. I just told them to walk or take a cab. And I told them I prefer they are on the train headed home before or near dark. I'm sure they will be fine.
