Re: How often do you water your lawn?

Since we don't have a sprinkler system, I rely on DH so it doesn't happen very often! Chat Icon

But my parents have one and I know it goes on once a day at about 4:30am. I know this b/c growing up if they heard you come in after the sprinklers were on you got "the look" when they saw you that morning/day. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

So I guess daily would be ideal?

Someone didn't water the lawn tonight (we do not have IGS) because it rained heavily on Sunday. Chat Icon

The sprinkler is on right now.

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

Yes, once daily is fine.

Also, be sure not to water it during the day, if it's hot enough out, it will essentially "boil" your lawn and burn it out. Not good.

Try to do it at dusk or dawn. Hence, the 4:30 ritual.

Yeah - we've been doing it around this time for about an hour or so.

DH was doing it daily - but the Scott's guy told him to do it 3-4 days a week instead to avoid growing fungus.

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

Very rarely. Honestly, I think I have only turned the sprinkler on once.
I am "training" the grass to grow longer roots. We have been getting enough rain each week - the grass should get about 1in. of water a week, including rain. This will help the grass grow long roots, so that it will "beat" the weeds in the quest for water.... It takes a couple of years to train though.

We don't water at all.

If and when it starts to lose color, luckily it rains.

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

I water everyday when I get home from work. We have full sun & not an once of shade on our property. The grass & plants need all they can get...I usually water each section (front, side & back) for about 30 minutes each

We go by the 1" rule as well. We've had enough rain where we haven't had to turn the sprinklers on all that often.

Like mentioned above, if you have a well established lawn, I don't think it's necessary to water daily. My mom almost never waters, and her lawn is very green as long as it rains once or twice a week.

Also, if watering, avoid watering at noon, becuase most evaporates, and the droplets act like lenses and may magnify the sun, effectively burning the blades of grass....

Never water in the evening, either.... the lawn will stay wet all night, and this will promote fungal growth... It's best to water in the early AM.

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

I believe the need to water daily is an old wives tale, after hearing it from multiple experts on gardening and lawn care. Regardless of your soil/sun/shade conditions.

Paul James, my favorite master gardener (HGTV's Gardening By The Yard) said as such on a recent show - that watering daily is wasteful and does your lawn no good.

I actually did write down what he said (because I'm a geek and sit with a pad and pen whenever his show is on Chat Icon) so I'll check it out. I believe it was every 3rd day.

You could put a small glass on your lawn and time how long it takes for it to be filled one inch. Then program your sprinklers for that time period once every third day.

I have full sun, windy conditions and very sandy soil which drains fast so that's possibly the worst water-sucking lawn condition around. I thought I should be watering more, daily even. But every third day is plenty, and the lawn looks just fine.

You can always add water if it's not getting enough. Preventing waterlogged soil and promoting fungus by keeping it too wet is not so easy to reverse. It's not just the surface you have to be concerned with, it's a few inches down where the roots are that are important too.

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

I thought the lawn only had to be watered every other day? That is what my landscaper recommends....

Our IGS run every other night, about 30 mins per zone. If it rains a lot, I turn them off for a day or two.

Too much water causes mold and mushrooms and kills the grass.

Every day is way too much.

In our town, you are supposed to water only on your house # days, such as odd or even days.

So if your house is 140 for example, you are even and should only water on even days of the month. (2nd,4th, etc)

Re: How often do you water your lawn?

we watch the weather & since it rained so heavily this weekend we haven't used the sprinklers yet this week. if it is hot & dry again tthe next coupleof days I'll turn the system back on & all 7 zones will run for 10 minutes each starting around 5 am. we never water more than that unless we have seed down.
my neighbors run their IGS from about 30 minutes per zone, IMO its a total waste of water.
