Getting hand me downs are so appreciated but I don't really have anyone to get from. It makes it harder when DD#2 is in a different size from DD#1 in the same season so there is so much I don't get to reuse between my 2 girls. I am in the process of getting DD#2's clothes that she's outgrown to pass on.

I do. I get bins of clothing from my nephews. I find that certain things hold up well when they are young - jeans, khakis, courdorys, coats, etc. Other stuff (t-shirts, pjs, etc.) don't hold up as well.
ETA: I still buy my sons way more than they need, but I use hand-me-downs too.
Same here! My SIL gives me all my nephew's old clothes. I consider them my wardrobe starters and then I fill in where I need to. But my MIL also does a ton of shopping so my boys have tons of new stuff as well as hand me downs!
PS my nephew was the first grandchild so he got a silly amount of stuff! So alot of what I get from my SIL has only been worn once, it would be sinful to throw these items away!

Between hand me downs and gifts, I have not had to buy many clothes for DD! Just a few special occasion dresses!

Definitely. I don't think of it as financial need--I think it is recycling, and doing our part for the environment by reusing perfectly good clothes.

I have no problem with any of my kids wearing hand me downs even if I buy them that way. Clothes sometimes are 3rd and 4th hand with my friends. It's funny to see the clothes get recycled to so many people and some of the better brands do hold up extremely well.

I don't only because we have no one to hand down to dd. I think its so nice to be able to reuse the clothes. dd clothes are in perfect condition she only wears an item maybe twice so I'm saving everything for a future dd maybe or to give hand me downs to friends who have girls.
I felt like that until ds was in size 12-18 b/c that's when he started staying in a size much much longer- like 7 months and counting for that size. Plus there's such a gift overload as nbs- everything that gets worn once, twice, or even a lot that was never worn- feels so wasteful!

i dont have a problem with it if they are from a family member or a friend. i wont buy clothing from second hand stores (like once upon a child)
I agree b/c I am super paranoid about bed bugs- esp since we live in NYC. 10 years ago when bed bugs weren't relevant I would have though.

HELLZ Yeah!
I can count on one hand the number of clothes I had to buy her myself in her almost 1 year of life.
Between gifts and hand me downs, I have rarely had to buy her one thing.
I am not to proud to accept hand me downs- they go through clothes so fast, and ruin them so easily I can't see spending money on clothes at this age

We are very lucky to have a friend with an only child and generous clients that buy him a ton of stuff. 25% of what he gives us still has tags on!
For us, it's not financial...it's convenience. Clothes shopping is pretty low on my priority list.

Yes-a couple of nice ladies on here have sent me stuff. I have shopped at consignment. I have traded on CL, actually I was giving away a movie this woman wanted and she insisted on giving us something so I asked for jackets and she brought me about 8 jackets! I also give my sister all of my outgrown clothes for my nephew

My nephew is 6, my DS is 4. My sister brings me bins ALL the time to go through.
LOVE It! 
For DD, I got some hand me downs, but, we have A LOT more boys in the family.
LOL It's OK, I don't mind girly clothing shopping!

definately. I have clothes my niece and nephew wore, and clothes my coworker gave me.
I haven't gone into a thrift shop to buy him clothes though... but if I was tigher on money I would.
I have taken some shirts from my family that wasn't always perfect either. Cause I know at daycare some days will be messy, so sometimes I'll bring it in as back up clothes... I draw the line at poopy stained clothes.

I checked other b/c I would only use hand-me downs from people I know.
My aunt just gave me a HUGE bag of my little cousin's clothes - most stuff was very lightly worn or still had the tags on them.
I wouldn't buy stuff at like a yard sale or something though.

Absolutely! Half of my son's winter wardrobe was handed down to us and thank goodness for that... he outgrew EVERYTHING I bought him for winter by late January/early February... right when they put out the spring line and you can't find any winter clothes in the stores anymore!

Most of my son's clothing is secondhand, most of the rest were gifts. Baby clothes are SO expensive, almost as much as mine! I refuse to pay for them. And it is  building an entire wardrobe from scratch!

Absolutely! I have 7 nieces and nephews and DS is the end of the line, so we get EVERYTHING! There are definitely some things I can't bring myself to put DS in since they are SO out of date. My eldest nephew is 14 and styles change  but I have no problem with things that are used.
