How Many Moms Use Second Hand Childrens Clothing Poll
if the clothing is clean, not ripped, etc.? I never had an issue, because kids can really mess their clothes up, especially with baby formula. I remember with Debi, our firstborn, that a friend of Mom's gave me a clothes basket full of beautiful little dresses, etc. all clean, and in great condition. I was really tickled!!! Mary

I do. I get bins of clothing from my nephews. I find that certain things hold up well when they are young - jeans, khakis, courdorys, coats, etc. Other stuff (t-shirts, pjs, etc.) don't hold up as well.
ETA: I still buy my sons way more than they need, but I use hand-me-downs too.

Hi, Kristin!!! I gave a ton of girl stuff to my nieces, and also received a lot from a neighbor with twin girls, which was awesome, because Deb and Donna were only 13 months apart, so I was able to dress them alike!!!! Since I kept Grandson, while Donna worked, I still have a ton of his clothing at my place. But I plan to wash it up, and give it to Donna to sort through. Mary

I don't only because we have no one to hand down to dd. I think its so nice to be able to reuse the clothes. dd clothes are in perfect condition she only wears an item maybe twice so I'm saving everything for a future dd maybe or to give hand me downs to friends who have girls.

My friends and I swap clothing. I had a DS first and then a DD. They had the opposite. At first I did not have anyone to swap with for DS but now I have a friend who gives me their son's old clothing. I still purchase clothing for my kids, but it is really nice to be able to have play clothing that I don't worry about. Tomorrow DD will wear Lilly Pulitzer courtesy of a friend. I would never buy her a $100 dress (at 1 1/2), but it is her luck and mine that my friends are generous and share. I feel like at this age they grow so quickly I can use my money when their clothing will cost a lot more as a teen.

I know the feeling re: receiving more expensive dresses!!! I loved Polly Flinders dresses, back when they were expensive!!! I found one in a second hand shop at a bargain price!!! I agree, about play clothes one doesn't have to worry about!!! I think you're a very wise Mom, to save for the teen yrs.!!!! Mary

Absolutely! My DS wears a LOT of clothes that were handed down from my nephews (now 7 and 10 years old!). If nothing else, some of the things that are more worn-looking are great as spare clothes for daycare.
Once Upon a Child is one of my favorite stores!

I LOVE receiving a bag full of hand me downs. It's like Christmas! Haha! I have lots of friends that give me their kids clothes and its awesome! In fact I get mad that my SIL doesn't give me my nieces clothes lol!

Half of DS wardrobe is second hand and I am not to proud to take it all. Babies go through clothes so quickly. DS has so many outfits he outgrew that he only wore three or four times. That is almost new to me.

I get a lot of great stuff from my SIL.
I still have to buy onesies, pajamas, socks and shoes, etc. But about 70% of DS's clothes are from her. She has great taste and has given us a lot of nice stuff!

I dont but only bc my son is the oldest out of all of our siblings kids and all of my girlfriends kids (except one but shes all the way in NC). They always get his clothes though!

I use hand me downs and buy from the second hand store. I especially like buying holiday dresses at the second hand store. I can't see spending ridiculous amounts of money on something she will wear once. I always get compliments on the things I buy there and about 80% - 90% of what I buy still has tags on them. The way I see it, I am going to wash them anyway and even when you buy new from the store there is no guarantee someone didn't buy it and return it. I have met moms who strategically remove and replace tags on dresses to have their kids wear and return.

I definitely accept hand me downs gratefully! sometimes if they are not my style or whatever I pass them along but I am always happy to receive! I have also bought DD a few things at consignment sales or stores for very little, like a beautiful christmas dress last year that she wore once and I got for $2!
