Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
If you own a home on Long Island, do you ever feel guilty for being able to live here? Whenever my friends are together (who don't own homes), they talk about how they can never afford to live here and how it is impossible to afford a home here. I always feel guilty because we can afford to live here. I get really quiet and try not to say anything.

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I understand what you're saying - and yes, on occasion, I feel bad that we have what we have in relation to some younger friends who will never be able to have the same and live on LI. That said - DH and I each worked very hard - both individually before we met, and together as a couple to build our lives. We took chances when we were younger - and they continue to pay us back on a regular basis.
Don't feel bad!

I'm not a homeowner, but I wanted to say...DON'T feel guilty!
You should and have every right to feel proud of being a homeowner.

No, I don't feel guilty at all. I worked very hard for what I have and earned it all. There's no reason for me to feel guilty.

Yes, I worked very hard and have been a saver my entire life... nothing designer, no vacations for over ten years, no regular Starbucks habit.
I also had to move back in with my father when I was 26 (I was only out of the house for a short while) and took care of him every day for seven years after he had his stroke. My "reward" for that sacrifice was being able to put a lot of money away. No one should feel jealous as my personal life was non existant and I was exhausted most of the time.
Both of my SIL's live OOS and it sometimes causes a bit of a problem but everyone makes their own decision for their own reasons...

I feel the same way. Most of the people I know that complain about the prices here make more than us.

Proud that I own a home. Not guilty at all.
A little jealous that people who don't own homes have less expenses though.

Never guilty! DH & I worked very hard to own the home we do! I see it as an accomplishment! You have to work hard to get what you want in any state, we are just fortunate enough to be able to do it here on LI!!!

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
My DH and I are both 23 years old and just moved into our first house. I do not feel guilty at all. We have worked our butts off to make sure we kept our credit clean, save money for a down payment and get a good education so we can have decent jobs.
It makes us feel good to be able to buy something so early in life.
My parents weren't as fortunate. They actually just purchased their house about 14 years ago. But there were underlying circumstances and they are proud of us.
And my DH's parents still don't have a house. And the way they spend their money I doubt they will ever own a house.

(40 minutes) We showed a few friends the house we are buying (drive-by) and one of them said, "I am not so impressed". So what do I have to be guilty about? I am PROUD!

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
Not one tiny little bit. We have lived here for 28 years and worked hard for everything we have. There may come a time when we are ready to retire that we cannot afford to live here any longer, but, I won't be jealous of any one who can. That's just the way it is.

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
We WERE people who complained that we could never afford a house here. We seriously looked at 3 places (Nashua NH, Stafford, VA and various places in the Carolinas) as other options but didn't really want to leave LI where the majority of our family and friends are.
We worked very hard and lived like paupers for 2 years to save money. Now we ARE homeowners. We moved further out on the island than we planned, we did spend a bit more than we planned so we have to pay off a piggyback mortgage before we have kids but it was do-able for us only 2 years after we believed it wasn't.
Try not to feel guilty, it really isn't out of anyone's reach, it just might take some of us longer than others.

That is absolutely terrible that someone would say that to you. I am glad that you are proud of your accomplishments. I can't believe how some people are.....
As for myself, my FH and I are very fortunate to be able to live in a very nice house in a very nice neighborhood and I dont feel guilty at all. However, I feel like people can become resentful and fail to realize how much hard work it took to get to where we are today. We have both had jobs that require us to work 70+ hours per week at times and so the resentment I feel from friends does bother me at times. I know that the people who we truely care about are very happy for us though and so I just try to ignore comments and off-hand remarks I may hear from other people. This is not just with a house though - it is whenever we have a nice car or take a nice vacation.....

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I complain about the housing prices all the time. not because im jealous or bc i want to make a homeowner feel guilty, its because its unfortunate that most first time homebuyers have to leave LI because the prices are insane (check the $399 home post.look at the pics.then look anywhere else in the country and see what $399 gets you)
both FH and I have great jobs (along with the student loans), credit, our date night last nite consisted of us doing a puzzle so we definitely dont spend $$ - if I had family elsewhere I would move (my sister lives in VA but thats it, and i dont think she'll stay that long)
You guys should be proud of the homes you bought - especially in todays market!

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I don't live in LI but where I live is even more expensive. I don't feel guilty or even like I am a sucker since we can afford it and work hard to do so. But I am sick of friends who don't own, well one in particular, who is now vacationing all summer while I work summer school. If I hear one more time... you are so lucky to afford a house, I will scream. I work harder, buy less toys and play less to afford it so SHUT UP!

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I understand what you're saying, but we worked hard to get a house here and I am grateful for what we have.
My DH and I dated for 9 years before we got engaged and waited another 2 years to get married. With all of this time, we saved a lot of money and were able to buy a good house in a good neighborhood.
During this time a lot of my friends were out partying every weekend and spending their money like crazy. Now they are seeing that they should have tried to save too.
Don't feel bad!

As I posted above I'm not a homeowner nor do I feel you should feel guilty about being one...it's a great accomplishment, but with that being said (again) I also want to say that not all of us who don't own homes spend our money foolishly...I do see that brought up a lot.
