As I posted above I'm not a homeowner nor do I feel you should feel guilty about being one...it's a great accomplishment, but with that being said (again) I also want to say that not all of us who don't own homes spend our money foolishly...I do see that brought up a lot.
good point- not having $$$ is not why we haven't bought yet

I feel guilty and fortunate, but it has more to do with: 1. where I live on Long Island rather than just on LI itself and 2. I never had to work or save to live here.

not everyone who doesn't have a house yet spends money like water. I hate hearing generalizations like that!

Proud that I own a home. Not guilty at all.
A little jealous that people who don't own homes have less expenses though.

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I don't feel guilty, but then again, I think there are some experiences that some of my friends have had that beat home-owning. For example, one friend lived in West Africa teaching English for 10 years. Another has almost 100k in student loans - from Ivy League college and grad school. Another was in a band for a looooong time. Those things are priceless, and just as "valuable" to me as owning a home.

I don't feel guilty but do feel bad for what people have to pay now. My house has quardrupled since we bought it 10 years ago. I can't even afford a 2 bedroom apartment now because our mortgage is so low from buying so long ago.

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I want all of my friends to be happy homeowners but I don't feel guilty. We worked really hard and saved and I am proud of what we have accomplished. I know that our friends will be able to do the same sometime soon, so I do not feel guilty at all.

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
I don't think you should feel guilty at all! My dh and I have many friends who have bought houses and we took our time and are finally going to buy one. (Just need to find the one )But we never would want our friends to feel bad for us. We just wanted to save as much as we could before we made the plunge. A lot of our friends got money from family members to help them which was not an option for us. Also some of them got interest only mortgages, second mortgages, or took out of their 401k, or a combination of these, which DEFINITELY was not something we wanted to do. We figured we would take our time and when we were ready we would buy. We have a great apartment and were not in a rush. I would never want someone to feel bad or guilty about it. I am sure your friends wouldn't want you to feel that way either!

Re: Homeowners-Do you ever feel guilty?
all of our friends bought before the craziness & have been married longer, so we are more likely to look at them & be envious of their mortgage payments that are 1/3 of ours for similar homes.

This is very true. Just because we aren't in the situation to buy a house at this time doesn't mean we went "crazy" and spent money like it was nothing.
