Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
DH 's car was stolen friday night from a valet. We went out with our friends and our night ended up miserable
It just seems that if they don't find it, we as the innocent party gets screwed.
The car was leased so Gap Insurance will cover the outstanding loan but that still leaves us with no car & no downpayment to put down on a new car.
We also had to change our locks (housekeys were on the car chain) and lost numerous items in the car (GPS, IPOD, etc...)
No leads, nothing. It wasn't even a fancy car just a small suv...

That Sucks
Shouldn't the valet have some kind of responsibility in that?

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
My car was stolen from LIRR parking lot. The cops called my cell and said "Do you know where your car is?" I said "I'm guessing it's NOT where I left it.." In my case they had found it & it was totaled so it just went through my insurance.

Right before I started dating DH his car was stolen by St. John's University. He went to class, came out and it was gone. The car was found, totaled (15 year old kids) stole it, drove it, and flipped it over on a highway (I forget where). Because they were underage, I don't think anything was done. They ruined the car. DH basically got screwed. I felt so bad for him.
I definitley think the Valet should be responsible.

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
I'm SOOO sorry this happened. It's awful. My parents have had cars stolen TWICE. Both times they were recovered -- neither was totaled, but one needed serious work. THe insurance company paid, as they never caught the guys who did it.
I'm so sorry!

Might want to read up on the law in NY state to check on this. They likely don't have any responsibility, but it depends on the circumstances... I don't remember what circumstances offhand, but I know it can go either way depending on the nature of the valet relationship. (No, it can't ever be easy in NYS!)

The parents are legally responsible for their children. He should have gone after them.
For the OP, I would go after the valet company.

I am so sorry this happened. I would definately question the valet about their responsibility as they had the keys for the car at the time it was stolen!!!!

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
No, but one of our friends had his car stolen from Commack Movies! Apparently the police said cars are always being stolen from there. They eventually found the car and he got the Bluebook value.
Where was yours stolen? I wonder if the valets stole it! Do they have any video cameras around?

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
my car got stolen once when I was younger- it was old- no theft- but I was in school- so the bank of Dad stepped up
you might want to look into insurance that offers replacement value- we have that on both cars- and when my DH totaled his car last year- we got back what it would cost to replace it- not the depreicated value

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
OMG that completely SUCKS!!!!!!!
I hope you get this resolved and IMO, the valet co needs to be held accountable! they might be in on it
get yourself a valet key chain so you can separate your car and house keys.
I HATE valet parking! I would rather park it myself and walk the extra 10 feet thankyouverymuch!

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
My DH had his truck stolen down in New Orleans while he was on vacation with some buddies... They ended up having to rent a car to drive back to NY with. The truck was eventually recovered, minus the rims.
I hope you get some recourse.

If there was a GPS in there couldnt that be used to help locate it? (I don't have that one so not sure if I am confusing that with onstar)

A GPS is a receiver only. There is no way to track it.

Actually, from the original post:
It just seems that if they don't find it, we as the innocent party gets screwed.
I took that as the valet company isn't taking responsibility.

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?
Valet companies and parking garages say on your ticket/receipt that they hold no responsibility...but it says nothing about the estalishment you were at. Call the place you ate dinner at and tell the manager what happened while your car was in the care of their valet. They may try to help you out because they don't want you to tell all your friends about what happened...which ends iin them losing business.
