Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?

Thanks everybody - it sucks! We are in the waiting phase right now - 30 days before it is deemed 'lost'. After that, all the legal responsibility will start. It has technically been 5 days and no leads.

What sucks is that it was a smart buy (lease). We put money down and have been paying monthy payments since 9/04 and purchasing it at the end.

It appears Gap Insurance kicks in but will fulfill our outstanding loan. BUT that leaves us with no down payment for a new car, and the money we paid to date...gone Chat Icon

We are meeting with lawyers to discuss our options at this point. It just sucks - we just bought our first home in August and don't have much of a savings.

The club /lounge hired the valet company - so who is responsible?

The company took our keys, gave us a valet stub, but the car was never parked (according to them). It was stolen while waiting to be parked in the back lot or something. Not sure about cameras - doubtful. They admitted to all that at the least. Cross your fingers...

sounds like somebody has got to be responsible. I'm sure valet co's have some sort of insurance for these situations.

DH's car was stolen a few yrs. ago, but it turned out to be a joy ride for a few kids and we found it stranded on the side of the road less than a week later.

Re: Has anyone ever had their car stolen?

my car was stolen a few years back. We lived in Little Neck at the time, parked it at night (dh actually took laundry out there that night and put it in for me to drop off at laundromat the next day), I go out in the morning-- no car Chat Icon

They found the car about 10 days later. Whoever stole it ahd been driving it around, and got into a car accident with it. They hit the back of a gypsy cab. They ran and were never caught. The car was older so I did not have collision on it anymore. It cost me 2500.00 to get it fixed. The kicker came about 9 months later when the people in the gypsy cab tried to sue me because from what it said they had major psychological trama and could not work anymore or something like that. The insurance company represented me for the trial, and as soon as the judge read the papers he kicked it out of court.

Valet companies and parking garages say on your ticket/receipt that they hold no responsibility...but it says nothing about the estalishment you were at. Call the place you ate dinner at and tell the manager what happened while your car was in the care of their valet. They may try to help you out because they don't want you to tell all your friends about what happened...which ends iin them losing business.

Exactly. That "no responsibilty" stuff is bullshyt. Make enough of a stink to the right people and they will take some responsibilty. You have to try to be persistent though.

By the way, chances are, you do not want your car back if it's found. If my car was stolen (which one has been in the past) I would hope that if they found it, it was deemed a total loss. The cost to fix it isn't worth it. And who knows what damage under the hood couldv'e been done on the thieves little joyride.

Best of luck!

Nobody said that Chat Icon

I was asking a question!

Oh then I guess it should have read "did the valet company say they had zero responsibilty?"

Why does it matter so much to you?

YIKES!!!!! I was just saying no one said that...

Aren't you a teacher?

i don't know if there's some underlying issue here, but i feel the need to say that it WAS implied that the valet company was accepting no responsibility, if you read the OP. and regardless of whether or not she typed in perfect english, who the heck cares - it's a public forum, and she didn't say anything to offend anyone, so i don't see why such snippy comments were made back to her. things like this are exactly where the unnecessary LIF drama stems from. ridiculous.

and for the OP... i'm very sorry about your car. i hate valets; i never had a car stolen but when i was 18, a valet completely smashed my car while he was parking it and it was the most unpleasant experience dealing with them to have it fixed; i've had a bad taste in my mouth ever since. i saw you mentioned something about having to wait 30 days until you take any legal action... does that mean it isn't actually reported stolen with the police? if it isn't, i definitely wouldn't wait 30 days... too much can happen in that time period. if they won't take "stolen" vehicle report then they can at least take "unauthorized use of a motor vehicle" with the valet being the last hands the car was in. that way, if the car turns up, is stopped by the cops etc, an alarm will have been transmitted on it. if you don't get it back, i would sue their arses. they should be help responsible in some way shape or form, period. best of luck to you.
